Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Kind of like how Babymetal performed on the Colbert show....
I did not know about this at all. They have Pop Vinyls now that I'm resisting picking up.

As for Miku, not a fan of her music. Her visuals are awesome, and the vocaloid idea is awesome. But that's about it.

Glad to know I wasn't the only Miku hater. I honestly thought it was some kind of inside joke like "let's all pretend we like this ruBbish".
Seriously though, I do enjoy her music, along with the other vocaloids, I also like j/kpop, trace, dance, Euro, etc, but their vocals just Lil it for me.
That being said, I do like her character design and own several expensive figures of her. Best girl among the vocaloids!

idolm@ster > Vocaloid >>>>>>>> Shit >>>>>>>Love Live

Anyway, in continuation of impression of Digimon Cyber Sleuth:

The story is pretty episodic. Almost like monster of the week. Really heavy on the sidequests. Normally I wouldn't like this but each quest npc have names and personalities, backstory, some of them become recurring characters. It really helps flesh out the world.

Despite the rather simplistic combat animations, whoever did the animations for special attacks really put a lot of love into it. Little things like fire leaking out of the side of Agumon's mouth before he does Pepper breath or the dynamic camera angles and zooming in for an attack make it look really good.

Well, looking at a trailer it isn't the specific type of game I thought it was. I probably would've bought it if it was a normal Touhou SHMUP or some other genre more to my tastes. Turning it into a 1v1 fighting game styled after Touhou SHMUPs just doesn't really work for me unfortunately. Maybe next time. Although I doubt it'll have a collector's edition, let alone physical release at all.

I knew of vocaloids and Hatsune Miku many years but I really didn't become a fan until I first played Project F demo on PS3. Now, I've been a rhythm game lover ever since I first played DDR back in 2000 when I was 20. It was only natural that I would latch on to these games. However, I love all types of music. Hell, I even love ABBA. So, I'm not the type of person who loves only vocaloid.

However, I will admit that I do own about 6-7 vocaloid related nendoroids.

On a side note, when one is determining your rhythm game skill level, what would you assess? I mean I'm no where close to those who can prefect everything. I have my trouble spots, like notes that are super close together. I have about 8 Extreme perfects under my belt from Project Diva F 2nd. Hardest one being a 9 star believe and that's the only one I haven't been able to replicate a perfect

I usually describe myself as slightly above average.

I would say I suck lol. But honestly, I'm probably just average. I can beat normal ok in most/all rhythm games I've played, but hard modes I usually have trouble with or I get a super bad score. Anything harder and forget about it. I think I am just getting too old. I can't keep up anymore with fast paced things. I would say I used to be above average when I was younger.

I will say Bust a Groove back in the Playstation 1 days I was really good at lol. Though part of it was trying to attack the other person you were against, so there was a lot of disruption on the rhythm portion. That game had pretty cool music for its time.

I liked Project Diva F 2nd because most of the songs behave like PVs with story or screenplay. The problem with the new PS4 Project Diva is that all the songs are performed on a stage. The background changes but the character doesn't interact with it.

Don't you mean the first Project Diva f? A lot of the songs in 2nd are just on a stage.

I used to own in my gaming circle w/ Shorty. People got to where they wouldn't play me. Rhythm games have all been downhill after that IMO. ;)

yeah its a shame that the special attack animations are so good while everything else is prettymuch skippable/fastforward.

sidequest wise it depends on the pin. alot of them are same sidequests repeated over and over again. go to such an such and find the sparkling thingy that is randomly placed in the dungeon. What was disappointing is the ghost sidequest just ends abruptly. the organ harvesting quest too. Sucks as they had interesting plot to them.

I hate the fact Namco Bandai refuses to sell the Pre-order DLC. I want to get Cyber Sleuth on Vita as well for the portability, but I cant cross save since I have all the DLC on PS4.

Either way its an awesome game, I can't wait to get around to finishing it over Summer break, I left off around Chapter 7 or 8, but I had done a buttload of grinding. Got my Platinum Sukamon's and a bunch of Tactician USBs, so I can grind easily now. (And Hard mode can stop being so brokenly hard)

This is terrible.
You're terrible.

I heard the story's gonna pick up around chapter 10 so I'll look forward to that.

Btw just in case anyone's interested, Bundlestars Killer Bundle 7 has

Fault Milestone 1

200% Mixed Juice

https://www.bundlestars.com/en/bundle/killer-bundle-7

Just in case you were thinking of getting either of those games from the steam sale, it'll probably be better to get them in the bundle for $5.

Might as well chime in (lol) in this rhythm game conversation. I really, really love Miku, and I enjoy the PDF games I've played, but I'm usually very picky about my taste in music, so it usually comes down to like 2 songs in the roster that I like, such as Melt and Black Rock Shooter, and I'm impartial about the rest. Most of the time I end up playing only those songs to grind for Diva points, but I still love the rest of the game and think it's well made.

However, after playing IA/VT, I was really surprised how good it was. I ended up loving most of those songs, at least like 50-75%. There's a really nice rock and soft pop kind of feel to it. To convey this even further, IA/VT colorful doesn't give you any additional points or EXP for playing a song you've previously finished before with the same score. So I go and play through these songs over and over again with no reason except to listen and enjoy them, not for grinding whatsoever. It's also the only rhythm game I watch the PVs for without playing.

I could always use some more SHMUPS, pre ordered the CE :).
I'm considering pre-ordering this. The only real SHMUP I own is the LE of Deathsmiles for the 360. I watched some videos of this earlier today and it looks promising.

I just dont like how in PD the notes come in from an un-uniform spot. makes it hard to track notes coming in. i prefer DDr or DJmax style

I would say I'm still pretty good overall at rhythm games even at the age of 35. I know don't have the stamina like I used to play DDR like I did when I was 20. I don't mind the notes coming from all different locations in the Diva games. It was much harder for me to enjoy the Persona 4: Dancing All Night UI. However, I love, loved IA/VT colorful.

Being a Miku helped me meet one of my good friends. He used to work at Sega of America. We bonded over Miku and Rhythm games.

Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't care for Miku/Vocaloid. I've watched several YouTube videos and downloaded the Miku remix of Heaven in Dancing All Night, but didn't like any of them. It's just not my thing.
I can totally respect that. For me, it took a couple tries to get into Miku. Project Diva was too hard for my tastes. But I really liked Mirai on 3DS and since then have become a fan. Now I've come back to Project Diva and find it isn't so difficult. And songs like "The Intense Voice of Hatsune Miku" now hit the spot for me.

So for me it was an acquired taste. Besides, being part of an intense fandom is fun!

So ... you hate Miku except for her music and character design?

I really like the decision they went with regarding the first question in this interview:

http://operationrainfall.com/2016/04/29/degica-games-interview/

Basically there's an option in the game regarding its censorship. If you think the art is to risque, you can play with the modified versions that cover the characters up more. Or you can choose to play with the original art without any changes.

I've always thought something like this could be a great compromise. Glad to see it implemented.

It really makes sense, I mean violent games like Mortal Kombat have blood/gore lockers why not add it for sexual content as well. Actually now that I think about it Katawa Shoujo had a "remove sex scene" option.

I saw Miku live last night.  Got way too much swag and some bad phone pictures to prove it.  Was a lot of fun, recommended to go see.

Im still bummed out that the Collectors Edition of Odins Sphere isn't coming out for the Vita....that looks like the perfect kind of game id like to play on a handheld.

To be fair, you can still play it on the Vita, just not get the CE version of it. ;D

That said, I am very sad too there's no CE for the Vita. T___T

NA doesn't really have an LE, it's just a crappy version with the calendar that's still readily available on Amazon because it's awful. =/
