Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

I have an important thread relevant announcement: I just beat Time and Eternity!

Towa best girl
Lol, I applaud you for soldiering through it. It's still sitting nicely on my shelf, awaiting my moment of desperation.

Opinions on Ray Gigant? How does it stack up to other DRPG on the vita like Demon gaze and Dungeon travelers? Honestly I didn't really like the little bit I played of the japanese demo but for the price on a new release, I'm very tempted.

Also I'm planning to get hot shots golf for vita. But I can barely find any info on it. How many costumes and accessories can you unlock? Is it like 2 costumes and color swaps per character? I really liked Panya and it's ability to buy all types of outfits and skirts. I couldn't get into mario golf world tour 'cause there weren't enough cute girls.

I really want Dead or Alive Xtreme 3, but don't want to pay a lot. My saved search on eBay tripped this new/sealed PS4 copy for $31CAD with free shipping:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dead-or-Alive-Xtreme-3-Fortune-PS4-Game-English-Chinese-Subs-BRAND-NEW/322174035033?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140602152332%26meid%3D40aa443912ed4404b59fb05a5f3c0fbb%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D10%26sd%3D252443553750

It's too good of a deal though. Poking at eBay a bit I turned up an identical listing from a real seller:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dead-or-Alive-Xtreme-3-Fortune-PS4-Game-English-Chinese-Subs-BRAND-NEW/231898284799?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131003132420%26meid%3Da350591573a04e81bfe1205afbe97595%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D322174035033

I'm pretty sure this is a scam to harvest personal info... A longtime eBay member who's never sold before, suddenly popping in with piles of copies at a huge discount, it's probably somebodies hacked account I'd think.

I thought it was a pretty fun game with a decent story. Unlike Demon Gaze, all of your characters are given to you, and follows a pretty linear path. I only played the demo to Dungeon Travelers 2, but can say Ray Gigant is easier than either DG or DT2. It's one of those games where if you're having any trouble at all, you just need to level up your team, and retry it. I was foolish and snagged it on its release day, but I was looking forward to the title and wanted to support more games coming over. It was an easy platinum and I had enough fun playing it. I could see it possibly falling even more in price in the future, but if you're looking for a bridging game in between games, you could do worse.

If it was legit, that would be an awesome deal, but it sounds too good to be true. However, years ago I bought Heavy Rain on eBay (a few days after the game was released) for only $20. The whole thing reeked of a scam, as the guy was also selling multiple copies of other brand new games dirt cheap, like Final Fantasy XIII. After the auction ended, the seller wouldn't respond and then eBay even contacted me, saying the seller was under investigation and that my payment was being refunded. Keep in mind, this was back when eBay was still partnered with PayPal (so they actually still cared, unlike today). Long story short, eBay refunded my money and the seller vanished without a trace.

A week later, much to my surprise, Heavy Rain came in the mail--and with a Walmart return address. It was bizarre. I ended up with a free copy of the game, but I still have no clue what happened.

Anyway, I just got lucky. Chances are the guy on eBay from France, selling DOAX 3 for cheap, may not be sending actual copies out.

Sword Art Online Hollow Realization CE up on Amazon. I don't know if this got posted but...

Rather steep but it has more stuff than say the ReCore CE.

Years ago so-called "experts" claimed that all music would be released digital-only by now. Instead, not only do you still have CDs, but you have a resurgence of vinyl releases.

Same goes for movies or games. There will always be an outlet for physical media. Corporate greed has prevented digital releases from reaching their full potential by not offering competitive prices in the marketplace. Until that changes, digital games will never outsell physical copies. Just look at Sony's PSP Go.

More digital....yay....it's good we're getting it, but I would have so bought the physical copy. Anime is decent enough, so I'll get it. I'm guess that means Asterisk War dub will come to Toonami or something.
doubtful its getting a dub that fast. Edit spoke too soon. Nice that its getting a dub its pretty good series minus the harem and fanservice vibe early on.

We seen the shift for the PC game market. I mean you can still get Diablo on a disc but if you are physical only PC gamer you are going to need a new hobby.

Also not sure why anyone is shock NB is digital with Vita. They haven't release any physical Vita game in US since Tales of Hearts

I'm not so sure about that. I prefer physical media, but there is an increasing percentage of digital media that I am happy to buy instead (especially for things that I don't necessarily intend to use long term). Frankly, as others have pointed out, while you can still buy PC games on physical media, most of the time you still have to authorize them electronically and download massive updates or patches and so the disc itself isn't really anything more than a way to avoid a slow download or burning up your broadband cap.

I have a huge DVD collection that I regret buying (especially in light of Blu Ray and 4K Blu Ray, both of which I have physical disc players for and a smaller collection of discs for both) and I haven't really bought many movies or TV shows on disc in the past five years. I also collect vinyl, but I recognize it's a niche and that the overwhelming majority of music sales are digital and that someday, vinyl sales will die out again and physical audio media will be no more. I think there are generational factors at play as well. Most of my younger co-workers live in apartments or small homes and they dislike the idea of having too much physical stuff. I'm slightly older and have space, so physical media is more attractive to me. I don't think physical media will disappear anytime soon, but there will be a time in the not so distant future when it does finally disappear for good.

Judging by the last few SAO games & how fast they plummet... I'm in no rush to pre-order any CE of that game.

What upsets me the most about news of digital only games for Vita, is that I will need to make room on my memory card for them.....

Which reminds me, I still need to make room for Ray Gigant that I got in the PSN sale this week too.   :wall:

Physical media isn't going anywhere until:

1. prices on digital downloads provide substantial savings

2. the quality of the digital product meets or exceeds physical offerings.  (this is why Steam is so successful)

3. internet data caps go away. (and maybe fiber optic internet becomes the standard.)

The younger generation can buy digital all they want.  I don't put my good money toward things like: standard definition, grainy low-res streams, waiting to download, download caps, or constant hard drive upgrading and expansion.

Comcast screws people here. Even though it's supposed to be illegal every one of these monopolistic ISPs throttles down your internet speed.  They sell data speed upgrades.   We pay an arm and leg for their services because we don't have other options.  Until that stuff starts to change the all-digital future isn't anywhere close to arriving.  Here in Minneapolis this has been the status quo since 2000.  Things don't change, not really.  The US has some of the slowest internet speeds in the entire 1st world.

As high-speed internet becomes more common and accessible, (and cheap) the need for physical media will continue to dwindle. There will always be some form of physical media available, but I wouldn't expect it to be the go-to option going forward. Nor would I expect there to be that many future standards for physical distribution.

One of the former posters mentioned a return of physical LPs for music. Vinyl is coming back, but not in the same way that it used to. An analog format such as vinyl has certain advantages for audio quality that still make it desirable for hardcore collectors and audiophiles. But you'll notice that cassettes and 8-tracks are NOT coming back. Those formats don't really provide anything tangible to the table. CDs still get sold, but they are sold in much smaller quantities. They are no longer the standard, simply an option.

Blu-ray optical discs will likely hang around a while for games. They are cheap enough to produce at this point, and store so much data that they still provide significant advantages over digital distribution. (especially with some ISPs in the US attempting to cap data usage) Cartridges may also start coming back for some home consoles, as they have tangible security benefits, and modern mobile and flash storage tech has lowered the production costs on them. But the shift from physical to digital is inevitable, and is more a matter of infrastructure and cost. Services like Steam, and now Xbox Live and PSN are paving the way for a more convenient digital experience.

I still want to see physical games, but I wouldn't be surprised if they become a niche product going forward. Something for crazy collectors like me, instead of a standard for a mainstream audience.

Fiber optic internet exists in some cities but they have the exact same business model as cable providers where you end up paying 60-100% more than you thought you were going to pay, while they continue to raise your rates without your permission after just a few months.

While I agree with most of what you have said, that's just the thing, the infrastructure and the cost associated with it has not been changing.

Yes, but this is an issue in the U.S. We've seen numerous examples in other countries where a more advanced internet infrastructure has already eliminated most of the problems that we face in the U.S. Here in the states, a lot of what we deal with is due to our geography, as well as an antiquated telecommunications structure that is extremely slow to get with the times. A lot of the outdated laws and practices surrounding telecommunications companies need to be stripped back or reversed. Also, a huge amount of physical infrastructure is needed to deal with the abundance of open space that our geography provides. Most countries don't have the same amount of sheer physical space to deal with.

But all of these are problems with solutions. Those solutions may take time and effort, but they will eventually be solved. The constant growing demand for high-speed access will insure that those solutions get worked on. It's just a matter of time.

I'm not saying digital distribution is going to take over tomorrow, or even next year. But eventually it will be the future. It simply provides too many advantages not to be.

Yeah. We'll check back and see where we are in about 2025

Someone mentioned PC gaming. Digital PC games isn't a great way to gauge the physical vs. digital gaming market of the future.

Digital PC games have a reputation for dropping in price fast and, in a few months after release, selling for next to nothing. Digital-only console games are substantially more expensive and, often, the same price as their physical counterparts (excluding temporary sale prices).

Not to mention, the used market for physical video games is huge. And I'm not just talking about places like Gamestop. Also, you have individual resellers, like eBay. Digital eliminates all potential for re-sale. And the collector's market for video games is, likewise, substantial. Nearly every AAA game has not one, but multiple collector's editions released of their title. Another thing not possible with digital. In short, companies will not throw away any avenue to make money.

I'm not entirely against digital options, but it'll take some doing before it ever becomes close to standard. There are still too many issues with it. Arkham Knight for the PS4 was fairly cheap during the last PSN sale. But 72GB with all the updates and the DLC? Personally, my internet is in no way fast enough to download that in any reasonable timeframe. I'll choose a disc every time.

I really want Dead or Alive Xtreme 3, but don't want to pay a lot. My saved search on eBay tripped this new/sealed PS4 copy for $31CAD with free shipping:
Why don't you try the free version that lets you play with Kasumi. Honestly DOAX3 has some fun parts, but I wouldn't really recommend paying more than $30 for what it offers.

I'd buy less games if they were all digital only instead of stockpiling games from generations ago and since the newer systems' online stores would eventually get shut down.. which I guess is a good thing?

Wait, but if they're all going to be free to play apps then I'll still have a gigantic backlog. Drats

My plan is to stockpile games so in the event of a natural, or man-made catastrophe, I'll be able to still play games a la I Am Legend style via generators, or solar charged batteries. Instead of quoting Shrek word for word, it'll be random JRPGs in different languages.

This is why I have 2 HDD's with 500+ GB of porn. I can't go back to pictures and imagination man, my stimulus bar is too high
