Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

I just don't like mobile port sprite work, I don't know why but it looks hideous to me.  Dragon Quest looked much better on the Super Famicom, but isn't that just always the case...

Do NOT preorder from Walmart. DO NOT DO IT. They are utter garbage at fulfillment. I don't even know why they're in the vidya business. They sure don't. You'd be better off paying MSRP than dealing with Walmart hassle.

It probably means they're already working on it if they're phrasing it like that so that once it releases they can say "This is because of the fans wanted it!".

I'd be worried if they give it the EVO treatment like they have for the past Trails games because it significantly reduces the chance of localization as XSeed is terrible about bringing them over for various reasons. I'd also pray that they add the quality of life features the PC version has such as Turbo Mode as well as the extra voiced lines. Though I'd like to see auto-advance on dialogue after the voice line is done. I feel it would help with dialogue feeling a little bit better.

yeah not having auto advance was jarring to me on top of the voice work issues.
I don't know if the EVO versions are considered better or not but with vita hacking you can play Trails in the Sky EVO in english and the second one is coming out in a couple months. They just port XSeed's translation then modify it to change item values and translate the content that's new to the EVO versions. So that's an option for those interested (definitely still purchase the localized versions though considering they're using XSeed's script). Pretty cool although you need a vita on 3.60 or less

I'm pretty happy about this. There's not gonna be a story mode, so not desperate attempts to make it canon, and they are acknowledging problems with P4DAN and said they're improving gameplay aspects. Maybe FeMC can be in the game now

The EVO versions weren't done in-house by Falcom, so there are gameplay changes they simplified things which some people don't care for. Music changes can also be very hit or miss as well with the EVO vs Original. The voice over additions in the EVO versions can be hit or miss as I don't really like the voices they use for certain characters which I actually find rather jarring. It's almost like a bad English dub for me, but most people seem to like the inclusion of the voices. If I hadn't played the game prior to voice acting though, it probably wouldn't be nearly as bad. Finally you have the art/portrait changes which in general seem to be worse than the original too, but that's of course also subjective.

Oh and some EVO versions actually have a few assets that are trash resolutions where the original is better (I think this is the case for Zero/Ao). How the hell they can mess that up is beyond me.

EVO games don't have the quality of life addition of Turbo Mode that the PC version has now, nor can you force it like you can on PC games with CheatEngine. It would really help to play through them, mostly for trash battles.

Weekly free PSN junk:

SUPERBEAT: XONiC

PS4

- Rackin Gravity (Song)

There's nothing else this week really, however there is a Square-Enix Sale. Unfortunately the web has been super slow to update the sales, so I'll link it in case something thread related does pop up.

EDIT: Oh yeah, this weeks PS+ $0.99 movie rental is Power Rangers if anybody is interested. I think next weeks is semi-thread related so I'll be listing that one too if I remember.

For you Overwatch players, the Summer Games 2017 event is now live.

New Event Skins

I'll also re-mention that lootboxes now have a significantly lower chance of providing you with duplicates. So enjoy not getting five of the same Legendary event skin.

I'll also re-mention that lootboxes now have a significantly lower chance of providing you with duplicates and when you do, they give you more currency. So while you won't be getting five of the same event skin, you likely won't be getting tons of currency to buy the skins necessarily due to the decreased chance of duplicates. Unless of course you whaled out on lootboxes in the past.
The Mercy and Widowmaker skins look pretty sick. Mccree and Junk Rat are alright. Seems kinda like they hit a slump though after the last few amazing events.

I'll put this reminder out again for every event: There's an Overwatch community on PSN, just look up "CAG Overwatch Group" or message me and I'll invite you. We got around 30 people, and we've used the community party/event system a few times. So feel free to join us!

Anyone have an Xbox Live community similar to BRW's?

New OW skins...now I'm retroactively paying the price for having bought so many loot boxes last year.  Really dumb that the old skins were brought back at new low prices.   That's now how you do microtransactions.   You just devalued previous limited-time-offer content.  You pissed off people that paid you hundreds of dollars.  I should have known better, this is Blizzard after all.  They only care about making more money.

I don't reget having spent the money. I knew what I was doing.  I'm just ashamed at myself for buying into Blizzard's idea of 'Games as a service' again.  They are scummy.  I honestly thought they had turned a corner.

Technically no. Your reward was having the exclusive skins for a whole year while many players did not. I paid for them, I used them more than enough (Especially Zarya's and Tracers), and I don't regret it.

Now we have the luxury of likely having to spend much less due to the loot box changes as well.

To be fair, the Summer Sale skins were never buy-able with your coins like every other event, the only way you could get event skins last year is either with real money or by luck. I still never got USA McCree. Plus you did have a year of exclusive skin usage if you did pay for it, so there is something.

It costs 1/3 today to buy the event skins than it did last year, and these particular Olympic ones were not even purchasable with currency; they were loot box RNG only.

Other companies I support that offer cosmetic microtransactions or paid services don't make the mistake of offering that content for significantly cheaper at a later point. It cheapens your brand. Only shit developers do that. In the eyes of some people, they screwed their supporters. There is no "technically". It's a matter of perspective and that is my subjective opinion.

They had just launched the game at that time and were still figuring out the system, and they have listened and made it better. I was getting dupes nonstop and now I'm barely getting 1 dupe per every 5+ chests. I'm finding it really hard to personally shit on them when like I said before, the reward for buying the chests was 1 year of exclusive content many missed out on. And its not like they held a gun to our heads either, I spent probably a good $100-$150 that first year trying to get Zarya's skins and Tracers and I do not regret it considering the sheer amount of playtime I have gotten out of this game alone.

Your subjective opinion is they screwed you and cheapened the brand, mine is that the brand was only what you personally valued it at and anyone who spent that much money (Myself included) could and should have had the foresight of seeing this happening eventually and spent that much simply out of laziness/collectors OCD/impatience.

They did say they were going to bring back the skins next year on multiple occasions, but they never really publicized it in an easy to find way. Which was kind of a bad move honestly. They also never really said how they were going to re-introduce the previous event skins until when they announced the Summer Games 2017 event either. I think most were under the assumption it would be at event prices.

If you really want 'limited' skins, then you should purchase yearly Blizzcon tickets. Everything from there is limited as hell and I would expect the Overwatch skins to be the same, but who knows.

Yeah, I regret not buying that last Blizzcon ticket, but at the same time I literally don't even touch Bastion. That and the fact I'll never have 100% completion anyway since I missed the Top 500 sprays and some of the event mode sprays

And if you spent that much more than $150 on that event, you kind of fell into the target audience of being a whale that supports the base justification of the loot box/microtransaction system to begin with, so it makes it a bit harder to agree with your point.

Does anyone here have Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax for the Vita or PS3? I'm missing only 1 trophy left to get the platinum, and it's to play 1 match online. I've literally been searching days for an opponent but the servers are empty, and no one uses the trophy forums anymore either. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I also hate when they make these online trophies, this isn't the 1st time the last trophy I needed was an online one where the servers are barren, and it won't be the last. I also need 7 more rogue kills in The Division for the plat...

I might be mistaken but I think I read in the patch notes that they upped the currency drop amounts that you would get the same if not more amount of coins as you did before the patch. I don't know how that's possible unless they doubled or tripled the amounts, but I'll look up the notes again.

Edit: Yeah, they mention it right here: https://us.battle.net/forums/en/overwatch/topic/20758326379

"Second, to compensate for this reduction of duplicate items, we’re also increasing the overall amount of credits you will receive from loot boxes. On average, you should be earning just as many credits, if not slightly more, from loot boxes as you did prior to these changes."

Pretty sure they got tripled? But I havent been paying much attention to my rewards lately since there havent been events running lol.

Either way I made sure to sit on around 7k currency for this event, hoping to not have to come out of pocket. I have gotten lucky on the past few and only had to spend like $20-$40. Much better than the $100+ I spent on Summer games, and the like $80-$100 I spent on Christmas/Chinese New Years

I had 13,000 coins saved up before the anniversary event, spent about 7k trying to get everything I wanted only to find out it would be at a premium price a year later.

I haven't spent a dime on the loot boxes yet, but I did buy the game twice, 2nd time finding the CE on discount. I've gotten all the skins that I really, really wanted, like Witch Mercy, Skirt D.va, Police D.Va, Medic Mercy, and 80's diner D.va. But there's a couple I regret not getting like Dr. Junkenstein and Chinese Dress Mei. So I'm kind of in between on the arguments made, on one hand I'm glad that I have the chance to get the costumes I've missed, on the other hand I'm pissed that I had to work so hard and put so much time into getting them, only to have them be easily gotten a year later. And timed exclusivity is a weak reward, especially for costumes you don't get to really see yourself, and for characters you barely ever play.

Correct. Now it's entirely dependent on your RNG to get currency drops as opposed to the guaranteed 'haha, screw you' RNG of duplicates. Though last event I got a fair amount of currency drops whereas I typically don't get them. I'm not sure exactly what I was thinking when I wrote that as I had some stuff on my mind at the time and didn't think it through.

And timed exclusivity is a weak reward, especially for costumes you don't get to really see yourself, and for characters you barely ever play.
I play them all. Mystery Heroes for life.

Still getting the hang of Doomfist though. Only played him a couple times now.

It's times like this that I'm glad I played Warframe for a year, it really put me off all microtransaction-based PC games forever.

Yeah I'd like a refund on my 3x skins I bought for 3000 coins apiece that are now going for 1000 tyvm.   I only have about 7000 coins now and would have 15k+ still if I had any inkling of the news of permanent price reductions.  I spent somewhere in the $300-400 range over four events to get that many coins and those skins.  But like I said before it was my mistake for supporting Blizzard when I know who they really are; all they care about are revenue streams and future dollars.

The thought that Destiny 2 is going to be on battle.net is frightening. Bungie has been so good in the past with their paid DLC models and cosmetics. But you know they are going to find additional ways of monetizing Destiny 2 now.

You clearly are the type of customer Blizzard or any other Loot Crate System wants. I don't see how Destiny being on Battle.Net has anything to do with Blizzard or your current problem with Overwatch and some how is going to go to Destiny. If anything I can see them doing the same loot crates systems other games are doing since it seems every game is doing it now

If Japanese version can play with US then yes, I have the JP version on PS3

Psh. They're not going to have new stories. They're just going to retell the stories of Persona 3 and 5 through interpretive dance!

What will they play for when shinji and femc do it while mitsuru and bad puns guy watch?
