Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Yeah, hands down, Racing Transformed tops any of the Mario Kart titles. Probably one of the better kart games available, with the exception of Crash Team Racing, which is god tier.
Well the best "kart" game available was Blur, but I wont quibble over semantics. ;) I didn't think CTR was held in that high regard. I mean, *I* loved it, but I know I'm weird. 'Cause like, I think Double Dash is the best Mario Kart and I know that's an unpopular opinion.

So, has White Day been delayed?

Instead of August 22nd, Amazon now has it listed for a September 28th release...

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073N4PGN1/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Yeah same as Summon Knight 6....come out already!
I have both pre-ordered from Videogamesplus.ca and they till show White Day for 8/29, and Summon Night 6 as 8/15 (Either I saw it incorrectly, or it just changed to 9/15. White Day still shows 8/29). I'll believe it once I see the shipping confirmation. Really want to play White Day. I'm in the mood for a horror genre game. Tokyo Dark looks really interesting.

Nothing really new this week with free PSN junk, but there's at least one thing:

Let It Die

PS4

PS+ Free Exclusive Pack (PS+ Only)

This week also has Attack of the Blockbuster Sale, which includes a couple thread related games. Pricepoints aren't exactly great unfortunately since it's a max of 50% off (PS+ is 60%). You also have this weeks PS+ $0.99 movie rental, Kong: Skull Island. I know it's not Japanese related in any way really, but I figured I'd include it since you do have a bit of King Kong vs Godzilla lore.

So my Sonic Mania CE from Best Buy was delayed.....I'm pretty bummed out.

Hopefully it doesn't get cancelled or anything.

Gamestop has Summon Knight 6 coming out on 9/7 now. It's been delayed so many times at this point I'll believe it when I see it.

IFI just revealed the LE for Mary Skelter $64.99

Looks pretty good.

That does look pretty good. I may have to get this one, as I passed on their last LE for the Vita that had the wooden box, as I just didn't see the need, and the asking price didn't help. It was actually one of the first Vita LE sets I didn't get. Normally no art book, means a no buy for me.

I decided to pass on another one over at NISA this morning as well. Yomawari: Midnight Shadows is $20 over the standard version, and all you get is a few little charms, and a glow in the dark cloth poster. Both items seem like they should be free GS preorder items, but for $20 extra, I'll just go with the vanilla and call it a day. Now that I've finally broken the cycle of not missing any of these, I should probably start looking at ones I can sell, and just get the standard games instead.

BTW, just a heads up, over at NISA Culdcept Revolt LE for the 3DS is below 5%, and I expect this title to have a decent demand after the fact, so get it now if you want it for retail. http://store.nisamerica.com/preorders/culdcept-revolt-limited-edition

Whats the difference from the NISA LE of this game and the BB LE of this game(other than the BB has yet to go live)?

It's on Amazon too. It's just one of the many LEs that NISA has started selling through other retailers as well and not just their store. So it should be the same, however NISA tends to package their games a lot better for shipping than Amazon or Best Buy does. That's the only real pro the NISA store has over other retailers. I don't really count the the higher frequency of getting games a day or two early as a pro since it's not guaranteed.

I'm just a sucker for novels...even bad ones. I've heard Mary Skelter's story is OK though. I'm sure i'll be alright. September is a hell of a month purchase wise (also 2 birthdays from family), so yeah....regular edition will do.

WOW, I had no idea this was being offered elsewhere, but as Draekon has stated, NISA started selling many of their LE sets elsewhere awhile ago. I always go with NISA, as I'm more about getting these items in proper condition VS. the discounts that can sometimes be had.

So yeah, I would say both versions are exactly the same. The only difference being whom you want to deal with for shipping, discount, etc.

Ah I want the Mary Skelter novel but nothing else....will just get the standard.
Same lol. I'm also a sucker for novels included with CEs. I often like then more than the art books, especially if the novel delves into any extra or side story.

Best Buy was live at one point for that culdcept ce. I got my preorder in for it on May 28th. Shortly after I noticed they completely nuked the listing. It is good to see it back up tho. Least it doesn't say sold out, so it might pop back up again.

I'm not much of an art book type of guy. Now if the art book is something like the one included with the Wonderful Edition of Summon Knight 6 (come out already!) than it's worth it. Those 20 page art books do nothing for me. I prefer full soundtracks, substantial art books, and unique items like boob mouse pads or cool bags.

I might get into the habit of collecting Art Books. Bought The Art of Splatoon and The Art of Fire Emblem Awakening and I was pleasantly surprised. I have the Persona Artbooks as well but it's a shame they're softcover only.

Thanks for posting this! I didn't pay much attention before but this is actually a movie I wanted to watch, so it got my attention this week. I tried looking up previous and next weeks if there was a list but couldn't find anything. Last week was Power Rangers and the week before was Logan right? Did I miss anything else? And is there a list of upcoming titles?

Can't wait to watch badass mofo Samuel L. Jackson blow up King Kong.

Edit: Also, when does the sale price end?

I just noticed you have a picture of the day on your sig and that's awesome! I'm usually on mobile so I miss things like this, but now I gotta check in on it daily on my laptop.

You missed:

Lego Batman

Logan

Power Rangers (Last Week)

They last a week, but you can 'rent' them and not view them for up to a month. Once you start streaming the movie it will lock it in to something like 24/48/72 hours typically. After which it will no longer be viewable again. I'm not sure how long PSN movies last once you view them, but Amazon video usually gives a date that ranges from 24 hours to a week after initiating playback. Unless PSN has some weird policy that once you watch it once, it's gone? That would be dumb, but I've never rented from PSN before.

Next week's video is Boss Baby, then Ghost in the Shell the week after. It changes every Tuesday store update.

I just got the Art of Splatoon a few weeks back, and it's really good, and that's from someone who doesn't give a rats ass about the game. LOL

There are a lot of great art books out there, but they are for sure not all made the same. I would wager to say I have hundreds of art books and guides, at this point, and that's after selling a lot of my older and rarer guide books years ago.

There's a pretty good thread over at NeoGAF that covers probably every gaming related book ever released, and users give thoughts and opinions on everything, as well as current cost. If your serious about getting in to collecting more, I recommend starting there.

Yeah i saw that thread. Great suggestions. Idk why the Persona 4 Design Works cost so much now. It was on sale for 20ish along with the P3 and P4A books a few months ago.

The art book hobby can be strange like that, as often books will go out of print, and then remaining inventory can last a good long while. But then, you may get a new game in a series released, which may get new fans interested, and that old inventory begins to dry up, and before you know it, a $30 book, is now $100+. And that often happens over night sometimes(or it seems to be at least).

I've seen that happen more often than not. When it comes to these art books and guides, get them when the price is good, as you will rarely if ever see them less than what Amazon or B&N will have them for at release, and unlike games, they go up in cost much more.

Of course you have some of those Prima guides or art books or ones that are way over produced with little to no interest, that may not be that great, so a decent discount may happen, but for the nice LE or ones like for Splatoon, they are only going to go up over time. Now on the flip side, places like Udon, and some of the higher end art book dealers may have annual sales or discounts(Udon has a crazy BF sale each year), as some books are priced to high at release, and may see sales at a later point, but that requires following those sties and staying on top of it for deals.

Another thing NISA has is its rewards program, which basically amounts to something like 5% back or something like that (could be more, I forget). That at least takes away a little of the sting of not getting the GCU discount. And their shipping is definitely the best.

I also got a copy from BB around that time. It sold out a lot quicker than I expected considering Amazon is still available (with the Prime discount too).

Yeah, I actually love art books too! It's probably my favorite CE item outside of Steel Books and possibly figures if they are well made. Usually they aren't very good though, even the Neptunia Hardcover ones look cheap. The best ones seem to be the Square Enix ones, the Lightning Returns, FFXV, Nier, and the FFXIV ones all look amazing.

Outside of CEs though, the Udon and the Dark Horse ones are pretty great. Gaming Graphix too for the Japanese exclusive ones. Sometimes I just read the art book and not even play the games like the Atelier ones.

The Persona Udon ones are crazy nice! There was actually a little pattern among them for a while, where Persona 3, Shigenori Soejima Collection, and Persona 4 art books all had different material to them, one was like paper mache, another was coated, and another was smooth thick paper. Maybe the P4A one is different too. Too bad the P4U one never got localized, but I recommend importing it since it's huge and got great art as well. Another great art book series is the Valkyria Chronicles one and the Sonicomi art book.

Too bad I don't have a Neogaf account, so I probably can't view that list.

Kong was pretty good, way better than the atrocious 2014 American Godzilla, which was one of the worst movies I've ever gone to a theater to see.
Awesome, can't wait to watch it! I wasn't too fond of the 2014 Godzilla either, although I do understand why people like it and why it's regarded as a decent movie. It's got the serious tone to it for a fantasy movie, where they make it all sci-fi and realistic, kinda like what they did for Batman in Batman Begins. But I thought there was too little focus on Godzilla, too much family drama parts, and we rarely get to see much of the fighting, and it isn't very clear when they do show it.

I love collecting art books, especially since im in a creative job field so having inspiration/reference is a good thing.

Just in the past 2 weeks I brought a Megaman anniversary art book, a Big Hero 6 one, like 2 different Naruto illustration books, and I just ordered a Tactics Ogre book from Japan today.

Yeah, I didn't care much for that 2014 Godzilla, but in regards to being the worst movie I've gone out to see........Not even close. I've seen some atrocious movies at the cinema. Honestly, I only ever go anymore with family or friends, as 97% of the movies I see I think suck. LOL

Oh yeah, I forgot about their rewards program, as I just got $10 off my order this morning for Ys VIII. I've actually gotten a pretty good amount of discounts over the years from them, so along with their superior packaging, I go that route 9 out of 10 times.

The best [figures] seem to be the Square Enix ones [...]
I'll admit I don't really have much experience with CE figurines, but I didn't think that setence was even possible to write, regardless of any qualifiers. In my experience, Squenix figs are pretty universally tacky and awful.

But again, not much experience with CE figurines.

Screw 2014 Godzilla. It was the only film I ever walked out of and demanded my money back for. I paid to see a Godzilla film. There was no Godzilla in that movie. It escapes me how anyone would enjoy that movie. Everytime we almost got to see a monster, they cut away. And those human characters were horrible!!

People want a "realistic" Godzilla movie (which in itself is ridiculous--it's a giant monster movie for crying out loud), then Shin Godzilla is the closest one can get.

No, I wasn't talking about figures, I meant the best art books are the Square Enix CE ones.

I was writing that most CE art books aren't very good, like the Neptunia hardcover books. But the SE ones are amazing, big, hardcover, and full of detail. Lightning Returns and Heavensworth didn't have figures in their CEs, but their art books were great.

I guess you might be able to tell, but I don't generally keep up much with CEs, so I just sort of figured you were referring back to statues, since you'd mentioned them earlier. My mistake.

there are a lot worse movies than godzilla by miles. It was just ok, if you watched the American 90s one you'd feel like the 2014 one was Oscar worthy.

LOL, I didn't see the 90's one, but based on what I've read and seen about it, your 100% spot on in your assessment.

I didn't really like the 2014 movie, but I didn't think it was terrible either. I watched it from beginning to end, so I guess it held my attention for the 2 hours which in and of itself is no easy feat. LOL

The '90s one would have been a watchable giant monster B-movie if it hadn't been called "Godzilla," and didn't have set expectations to it. At least it was cheesy and I could laugh at it. That new one was just worthless trash all around. As far as production values, no, not the worst movie--but as far as an insult to one's intelligence, yeah, 2014 trashzilla is in the ranking for top spot.

I am in the minority here and believe the 2014 Godzilla movie was pretty decent. I'm certain it has something to do with the fact that I've watched about all of the sci-fi giant monster movies that was released by 'merica. So as others have mentioned, it is a lot better in comparison.

I didn't like the older king Kong movie with Jack black and Naomi watts either so I have high hopes for Kong.

For my 5th grade graduation party I was given a lot of 98 Godzilla movie merchandise presents.

I never liked Godzilla and didn't ask for any of this

Not to push the thread too much off-topic but I haven't watched too many, especially the older ones. But off the top of my head, I would say Cloverfield was my favorite, it was just so mysterious and realistic. I didn't like Pacific Rim much, nor Godzilla, nor the Jack Black King Kong reboot.

Looking up an actual list, apparently Jurassic Park counts too, I guess that's my favorite. Tremors and Super 8 count as well apparently, and those were pretty great also.
