Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Is The Last of Us Part 2 coming out this year? That's another one I'm pretty highly anticipating, and would be a GOTY nominee from me.

I haven't seen much of Spiderman yet, but if it's anything like Infamous, then I am super hyped for it. And yeah, if it's anything like the Arkham games I will be super impressed too, since I absolutely loved Arkham Knight. And I know you love it too lol, since its been 3 years and no one has beaten your Gotham's Finest high score yet, and I doubt anyone ever will.

Speaking of Batman, that Batman Ninja movie was phenomenal. One of the best anime I have watched in a while.
Not sure if Last of Us Part 2 is coming out this year...I'd be surprised if there wasn't some word on it at E3 this year. I'm sure that will be an instant GOTY contender.

I could only wish Spider-Man would be like the Arkham games. Arkham Knight still ranks as my favorite PS4 game. I've been wanting to check out Batman Ninja--it looked awesome!

I love how people keep trying to imply there are major games releasing this year OTHER than Monster Hunter World. Yeah, the sun comes up in the west, too. Sure thing.

It's just a matter of taste. What you consider major games may not be what other people consider major. MH may indeed be the bestselling but there are other big games - games that I personally couldn't care about that will probably sell well. Like God of War. And to say God of War isn't a major release isn't exactly accurate.

Personally my major releases of the year are Dragon Quest 11, but that will probably sell lukewarm here in the west compared to japan. As well ass Kingdom Hearts 3 and Shenmue 3 (lol). But if the sentiment is that the releases this year are underwhelming I'd have to agree.

You don't understand sarcasm, do you?

Has anyone that can't read Japanese played the Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball series? Been watching some streams of the latest version and while it looks like fun I was wondering how well I could get by using Google Translate.

I completely forgot that Gal Gun 2 was released this week...

So I totally missed out on the 20% pre-order discount on Amazon. Guess I'll wait a while for the game's price to drop

Well technically yes I have, but it was on mobile years ago in English haha - I believe it was localized as MLB Power Pros. It was lots of fun with all sorts of player stats and stuff, maybe I’ll give the new one a try

Sorry that don’t answer your question though lol

It was nice when we had two weeks to decide on a game and still get that 20% discount. And now Prime is going up by $20 a year. I have been thinking about not renewing this summer and think that has pushed me over.

Ya it's just plain greed with Amazon raising the price of Prime while continually stripping features. They're turning massive profits every quarter as it is. Another $19 x 100 million currently paying Prime members speaks for itself I guess.

As someone that has no interest in any of their digital services, $100 / year was already too much so I'm definitely out at $120. I'll continue using GCU and subscribing for one month at most to Prime, placing all the pre-orders I need to for any Amazon exclusives I may want and then cancelling if I really want the 20% discount.

I always call these things "cell phone bills".  It's amazing how many cell phone bills we have every year between club memberships and subscriber programs.  It really starts to add up.  This type of price increase used to make make angry but $120 isn't all that different from $100.  What I'm more curious about is what % of customers they are going to lose with this 20% price increase.  I think that it would be more than 1 out of 5 people will quit their sub, but who knows.

If you're not happy with the price, you just stop subbing though.  It's not a big deal.  Personally, I'd quit my sub and then wait for the inevitable promotion during Prime Week or the holidays.  They'll feel the effects of this price increase; they're just banking on everyone's auto-renewal and laziness  (be sure to go into your account and turn your auto-renewal off).  However, I think I have one year of student Prime left, if they halt my eligibility at four years like I've heard described by other posters.   At $50, it's a no-brainer.  That's something that any of you should look into if you have access to a .edu email address; that's all it takes.  Actually been using the Prime app for movies and HDR shows for the first time this year, too.

But yeah, if you're not ordering from Amazon at least once a month then you have no reason to sub.  It looks like I had 38 orders placed in 2017 so even at $120 that's a pretty good deal, all things considered.  I prefer to shop b&m but Amazon does a good job with certain orders.  They bring a lot of value with the obscure accessories that you need like HDMI cables, random books, SE video games, and Christmas presents.

I just went through my old years of orders and this was the first and only thing I ordered on Amazon back in 2001 for $34.99
LOL, good one, mine was this from 2006, don't know if it was my first, but it seems to be. My son was born that January, so 2006-2008 is a blur, as my son was very sick and just playing games was a pipe dream mostly. To show how bad it was, I ordered this one item in 2006, and didn't place a single order in 2007. Then 18 items in 2008 and off I went from there.

Yeah, I was reading about the MLB versions of the series in English on Wii and PS2. Might have to try to find a cheap PS2 copy of one of them to give the series a go before spending a lot on one of the more recent Japanese versions.

Nothing really interesting console wise, unless you never owned Tropical Freeze on the Wii U. Otherwise I have some interest in the Princess Maker 5 simulation game for its weird quirks and also noticed Soul Smith, which I know nothing about but seems to also be a simulation game that may check some boxes for me.

Games like this are why you want to get a decent 4K HDR television and a PS4 Pro.

I wonder if nintendo will do remakes of gen 4 pokemon and the gba fire emblems to fill the void until the new switch titles for both eventually release?  They'd likely be cheap and easy jobs for pokemon.  Fire emblem would be a bit expensive though if they continue to keep the quality shadows of valentia set.  As that game had alot of voice work while the other games in the series have barely had any.  I was very surprised when I played it since I was never expecting more than bare bones voice work.  It easily has more lines voiced in it than all the other english titles combined.

awww and here I had nearly forgotten that retailer exclusive pre-order bonuses were still a thing.

I think I'll go with the Best Buy pre-order bonus of TWELVE DOLLARS LESS! :D

But then how will you snazz up your vest/backpack without those DQ buttons? I guess you could safety pin the $12 to it, but that just seems like it would invite trouble.

Stardew Valley on Steam listed an opt-in multiplayer beta for any who own it there and are interested. GOG to follow in a few days. For those who aren't/can't, but are curious how it works:

  • Up to 4 players
  • No local multiplayer unfortunately. Although there is a local co-op user made patch on the PC.
  • Adding someone to an existing single player save requires the player to build a cabin for each player (10 stone / 100 per cabin)
  • If starting a new game, you can co-op from the beginning
  • Can change profit margins when creating a new game
  • Sleeping requires everybody to get in bed and answer yes to the dialogue
  • Starting a festival requires all players present at the festival location to start
  • Farm Shared
  • Money Shared
  • World updates (Community Center, etc.) Shared
  • Inventory Separate (Offline players’ inventories can be accessed through the chest of drawers in their cabins.)
  • Skills Separate
  • NPC Relationships Separate
  • Can marry a player instead of an NPC
  • The host can only pause the game using the /pause command in chat while in multiplayer currently, which pauses the game for all players.

No word on an estimate on when the non-beta patch will go live on any platform yet.

Finished GOW, By the time I saw the "secret ending" I was so done with this game.

Just dragged on wayyy too long. I did appreciate the lore though, Mimir kept me entertained enough to distract me from every other mundane room puzzle or fetch quest.

I would normally do the same but I'll be going digital for DQ XI to get that extra 11 hours of playtime during my vacation.

Nintendo why’re you acting so weird about DK, first it’s gone from GameStop and you cant trade it in and now this? It’s not like anyone with a Wii U who still hasn’t gotten it would randomly buy it for Wii U now
True, but to see a $60 game along side pretty much the same game for $20, it's going to be a HUGE problem for many. Especially for those who may not be aware of the issue. They removed it so you no longer have to worry about getting the cheaper version, and is typical "N" BS, as it raises the exact question they are trying to avoid?

I got my digital copy of Tropical Freeze from the final rewards for the old Club Nintendo. Between that and the Mario Kart deal, CN was great for WiiU owners.
Me too. Amazing how far in the "wrong" direction they have gone in a flash. Much more profitable for them of course and it was inevitable but it still sucks knowing how consumer friendly Nintendo once was.

A lot of those dlc code easily worth more than $12 if there is no other way to get the item

I got it when it came out and it's not even that good of a game. Nintendo doing this is like them recognizing that the Switch version isn't really needed nor different enough from the original. These Wii U ports are just cash grabs. The truth is the Wii U didn't have a lot of good games and neither does the Switch which is why it's getting ported all these old boring games.

For my two cents on Donkey Kong and the ports:

-It's an absolutely brilliant 2D platformer, and easily among the very best of the last generation.

-The Switch ports make a lot of financial sense since the Switch is already much more successful than the Wii U, so there are new potential customers.

-I love having more convenient and better versions of games.

-The price hike on the re-releases vs the current pricing of the Wii U versions is a tough pill to swallow and is obviously a cash grab, but just wait for a sale. There's absolutely no urgency for purchasing these now at full price.

-I can't think of any other console that has ever existed that had as many amazing and high quality games in its first year as the Switch has. Exclusives, ports, re-releases, indies, new games, all of it.

-They are porting some of the best Wii U games, and a game being old doesn't make it bad. 'old an boring' doesn't seem like an adequate description of these titles.

-That is all. Haha
