Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

So I opened the Steam client to grab a temporarily free game, went to the store page, and [customspoiler=this]
vurKYHj.png

[/customspoiler] is what I was greeted with.

You, uh, might want to avoid clicking that spoiler at work.
I see that one on the front page of Steam quite often because I click way too many games on a weekly basis. I even have RPGMaker Games, Visual Novels & Free to Play tags blocked in my Steam preferences too, but they show up anyways on its front page. Though I never use the Steam client browser because it's pretty terrible.

Bullmoose.com can also be viewed as an alternative to Best Buy. Their prices are usually a few dollars below retail ($19.99 games are $18.97, $49.99 games are $45.97, etc). They don't charge tax to most people and have free shipping over $30. They usually ship before release date so you get the item at release or a couple days late. They also have their own rewards program. I've been using them to pick up some cheap catalog titles now, along with some Blu Rays which they occasionally have deals on. When my GCU expires I will probably do most of my preorders with them.
Never ordered from them before. How is their shipping quality? How do they ship out single games or blu-ray singles. When do they upgrade to using a box, etc.

In my experience they only use bubble mailers for small game, CD or movie orders, though that's not any different than Best Buy or Amazon. That said I've never gotten anything damaged from them. Plus they have great customer service so I imagine a replacement would be pretty easy if it came damaged.

Looking at bullmoose, are their pre owned games usually complete?
I've never seen a game without the case and insert in the store. The reason is, if you try to trade in disc only at Bullmoose they only give you like 1 cent no matter what it is, so no one trades in there if they only have the disc. So the odds are really low for you to come across disc only for any of their physical media.

Cool, gives me a bit more confidence in buying some games, thanks.

Thanks. I'll give them a try next time amazon is out of something I want.

Draekon 7'Scarlet has a physical Vita release too.
You know, when I remember when I first checked it I saw that. Then at the end I thought "I should check PS Blog just in case." and it said Digital Only there, so that's what I recorded. That's what I get for doing it past the time I normally go to sleep.

Who does Samael's voice in The Lost child? I like it.

And I'm really excited for the new sonic racing game. They're so much better than mario kart.

And shenmue... well, it does look better at the very least but I just have a bad feeling about the game.

I dont read CAG for a weekend and all this news is what I'm greeted with? As if Mondays weren't bad enough!
Then you should know that Steam/Valve sent out mails to those who received it saying they'll re-review each game. Not sure if everybody who received the original notice got one or not.

At least four developers/publishers did (Huniepot, Lupiesoft, Mangagamer and NekoWorks).

Also Sekai I think did for Tropical Liquor (this game looks horrible haha). Hopefully these all turn out well.
Neko Works actually got the notice for Tropical Liquor (even though Steam says it's published by Sekai). Not sure who owns what really.

And it's not a horrible game, it's just not exactly worth the $10 it costs. At $5 or less it's okay though.

Both Muv-Luv VITA games available for Pre-Order on Amazon and release June 8th (1 - 2)

Meanwhile backers are told to wait...  :nottalking:

well, that's not accurate.  If they started developing for the PS5 in 20121 then the first games wouldn't be ready until 20124 or 20125.

None of these are Cold Steel III. :bomb:
If you haven't already, you should go through the Sky trilogy in the mean time. Same with Zero/Ao since all those games will come up in Cold Steel III from what I've heard. More so on Zero/Ao since some of the game takes place in Crossbell and has returning characters from that duology show up, similar to what we had in the Divertissement section of Cold Steel II.

I dread probably having to play an unedited translation of Ao prior to Cold Steel III, but it's that or have the game spoiled for me for when I do go through. Not that it would stop me from playing it to completion or replaying it after its edited.

The [customspoiler='Overwatch Anniversary Event']
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVGDAHSSboE[/customspoiler] has gone live on all platforms, a few hours earlier than usual. It will last until June 11th, which is the typical three weeks length.

New Skins & Emotes

There is also a new map for FFA, called [customspoiler='Petra.']
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSvm-_NxZXA[/customspoiler] On top of that there is a Competitive FFA/Deathmatch mode under Arcade as well.

This event has old events cycling daily, with today being Lucioball. The lootboxes contain skins from all past events and are mostly priced at 1000 coins. The recent events are still priced at 3000 coins (Lunar/Archives). Also the free gifted lootbox you get at the beginning of the event will contain a legendary.

[customspoiler='Trace & Bake 2-Year Anniversary Video']
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYoKcaPZnCc[/customspoiler]

A quick short rundown on the latest changes patch as well that came with the event:

- Ana shoots through full health allies, increases ammo count & can nano boost herself in FFA.

- Brigette & Hanzo received some nerfs.

- New'ish map, Rialto, is now playable in competitive.

Patch Notes in GIF Form

I picked up the Trails in the Sky trilogy from humblebundle this past week (since it's on sale there) and am about 15 hours into the first game. I'm really enjoying it so far, and I'm hoping they put Cold Steel 1 / 2 on the PS4 soon - I haven't played this series before :) I finally took the advice from this thread to try it!

Well, hopefully you enjoy them all. Estelle is probably my favorite female lead character in a game and the cast of NPCs across the series is great as well. The series just really suffered from being localized way too late on platforms without any real traction in the west anymore at the time. Those being the PSP and PS3, even though PSP games ran on the Vita.

If you want to do all sidequests, you'll probably need to follow a sidequest guide to make sure you don't miss them as there are quite a fewf hidden ones. NPCs also change dialogue all the time between events, but it's not as good as later in the series in that regard. Estelle's hometown is pretty good as are key NPCs like the newspaper duo and Anton.

Picking them up on the PC will make them go by much faster and make the slow parts more tolerable thanks to turbo as well.

I feel like this could have been worded better; now everyone will take it out of context as meaning the PS5 is right around the corner.
Yeah, every Sony press conference is going to be preceded by a thousand sites going "Will Sony announce the PS5?!"

For me, it's more about comparing where I'm at with my PS4 to where I was at with my PS3 at the same time. I'm a lot less ready to move on from the PS4 than I was the PS3.

I don’t think there’s been a firm release date yet though it came out March in JP.

Since someone mentioned Cold Steel, can anyone tell me if Cold Steel 2 has an ending with some closure or does it leave off on a cliffhanger?

Hopefully we continue to get localizations and physical releases for Yakuza 3-5. Would be really cool to have steelbooks for 1-6.
I totally agree. I'm sure they'll bring them over and I'll absolutely pick them up despite having played all of them. Although am I crazy? There is no steelbook for 6 as far as I'm aware? I wish there was because that would be an incredible collection to have but I can't find a reference to a Yakuza 6 steelbook anywhere. Also no steelbook love for 0 :(

Both, but mostly the prior. It closes the main arc that crossed the two games, but it briefly touches on another arc that that will continue revolving around Rean, the main protagonist, with various shit that went down in the two games along with pulling from games from previous arcs.

It's not like the ending of Cold Steel I or Trails in the Sky FC where it's a blatant cliffhanger like American seasonal shows with the last seasonal episode where they cut it in half to continue in the next season. It ends like a normal game mostly with everything more or less 'resolved' at the immediate moment in the characters eyes for them to continue normal lives again.

Could've sworn there was one in the After Hours edition of Song of Life, but I just checked mine and there isn't. Sad day. :whistle2:(

Heads up that I recall there is a Trails of Cold Steel trilogy for PS4 in the wings. No timeline but with backlogs around here, I figure most of us can wait.

It's actually a quadrilogy. Though it wouldn't be wrong to call them two duologies as well much in the way that Sky is and isn't a trilogy.

Both Cold Steel I Kai and Cold Steel II Kai have released in Japan. Cold Steel III has released already and Cold Steel IV was announced for September 27th this year in Japan. There hasn't been any announcement by XSeed for localization on any of those yet. Nothing script wise was changed in the Kai ports to my knowledge, so we'll likely see them brought over at some point. Maybe an announcement at E3 for the two Kai games.

I just can't see XSeed including the two Kai games with Cold Steel III, should they bring it over. It takes way too much effort to translate to not have the game be full price by itself. On the other hand, we could see a compilation release that includes both Kai games in one.

Good to know. I'm playing through the first game right now and was just concerned since there's no word on the third game yet.

I thought CS2 had pretty good closure for a JRPG ending. Obviously they left some loose ends for CS3 and 4, but CS3 starts like a year and a half after the end of CS2 and feels more like the beginning of a new story to me (at least of what I've played of it) rather than just a continuation of the original story. Though like Draekon said, it's a little bit of both.
