Welcome to the Japanese niche games deals and discussion thread!  Feel free to talk about local and import Japanese games here.  Our goal is to maintain a thread dedicated to active deals on niche games including RPGs, Visual Novels (VN), Shoot'em ups (Shmups), Musou, etc.  Also maintained are pre-orders for standard, limited and collector's edition games with key release dates provided.

I've wikified the thread to make it more friendly and open to others that can actively update with important information. You can find the wiki post directly below this one.

NOTE:  Please, leave the censorship discussion away from this thread.  It's common for japanese games to have questionable content outside of the country.  We want to keep discussions to the game itself and not about cultural/societal tolerance.

A message from Thorbahn:

Our CAG Japanese Niche Games Thread also has a community on PS4, where you can interact and game with other members of the thread.

Our moderators are: Draekon, Las_Hole, and Waffleswanton

You can basically friend any of our members, or any moderator, and you will be able to request to join the community under "Communities friends are in" tab, and a mod will approve your request.

You can also leave your PSN ID in the thread, saying you want to join, and we can invite you directly as well.

As always, have fun and enjoy your stay!

Does anyone know the rationale of PA to make 3K for the RXN LE but 1K for the standard? Seems odd the LE has more copies than the standard edition.
Since there is only a $10 difference in price there is much more demand for PA's LE's than SE's. Dimension Drive went with 40% standard and 60% limited but it looks like that wasn't enough so they increased it to 25% and 75% this time around.

Kill La Kill was a poor choice for translating into 3D graphics. The original animation style of the show is heavily reliant on exaggeration. That type of animation is very difficult to effectively achieve with modern 3D graphics, especially 3D in-game graphics. Getting a real-time rendered game to emulate that style was always going to be a near-insurmountable objective.

Likewise, the story of the anime doesn't really lend itself well to most game-types either. Once again, it is far less about the action, and much more focused on exaggerated characters. The action is just an occasional set-piece, and is at its best when it directly relates to the over-the-top characterizations. In truth, a fighting game is one of the better choices for game types, thanks to the short play sessions. But there was never going to be an ideal game style for this particular show. The best aspects of the show are the parts that are hardest or least appealing to translate into an interactive medium.
Agreed there. The best I could see is maybe a musou title? Since she beats thousands of students up on a general basis.

Hey draekon since you are very knowledgeable would you say that the ps4 version of Ys 8 was a port of the vita version despite them being initially announced at the same time and it just being delayed?

I don't think that Kill la Kill game looks that awful. The combat appears decent and I like the little optional attacks in the middle of the fight. I'll reserve judgement for when it actually gets released.

There's been a number of great anime video games released, but I feel like they missed the boat for Kill la Kill. I liked the show, but it doesn't have the same following or fan base it did three/four years ago, which is never a good thing when it comes to sales numbers.

Did anybody preorder Caligula Overdose? Any opinions on if it's worth getting?

PlayAsia has a LE which comes with a nice steelbook, but almost $45 more before shipping.
Wow, I was gonna get the NISA version but that steelbook is amazing. The Asian version of the game also appears to have English as an option, so I'm gonna say this one is probably worth getting over the NISA one. You're getting everything except for the poster it seems. And NISA doesn't offer free shipping unless it's over $85 anyway I think.

If you're asking if Vita was the lead platform, it probably was. However when making any artistic assets, they would have been designed around the PS4 and then downscaled to work for the Vita version. Resources were likely put towards the Vita as handhelds are far more popular over in Japan than here and there is a much more established base. With ten months in between, a version could have been ported over as that isn't too short of a period for a port to happen.

Even if it was a port, it's not a straight up basic port. Enough work was put into it to make it feel like it belongs on the PS4. Side by side development still exists these days, but it's nothing like it once was 15 to 20 years ago. Porting is an often demonized word, but it's hardly a bad thing. It's more on the company porting it to whatever platform and how much work they put into it.

The PC version on the other hand... That's what happens when you don't understand a single thing about the platform you're porting to and attempt to do it the same way you would a console/handheld port. Then not communicating to people in a proper or timely fashion.

Neptunia VIIR is $12 on that PSN flash sale. I wasn't expecting that until at least next year.
That's about my buy price. I usually get them cheap digital and maybe cheap later physical. I'm not a huge, huge fan of the series, so I'm OK not having some physical.

Anytime I get slightly interested in buying a Neptunia game, I watch a gameplay video to remind myself how utterly boring it looks then end up saving my money.

Happy Miku Cake Day!

I bought Neptunia VIIR. I thought about buying a Neptunia game in the past, but each time the one I looked at reached a good sale price there was an announcement for one that looked better. The Vita games for my PSTV reached a good price, then VII for PS4 was announced. VII reached a good price, then VIIR with some PSVR features was announced.

True I didn't factor in that the vita had the last game released on it so it would have a pre-existing install base for the series.

No kidding, that steelbook is beautiful. Well, guess I'm gonna have to get it now. 😭😂

Also, apparently the Asian version comes out around October of this year? While the NISA version just says 2019 with no actual date. So another good point being you can play it early.

I realized that I originally wanted to get it just to pair with the Disgaea snapback hat they have coming in the Fall for free shipping. But this steelbook is too gorgeous to resist... T_T

How is it? Thinking about buying it as well but never played a Neptunia game before.

I have an LE of Caligula Effect preordered from NISA but... I watched a Let's Play and like the first couple hours are set in the same library or something? Hope it goes off the deep end and doesn't just stick to the high school setting.

You could have watched vita gameplay since it's the same game with some added features.

DQXI arrived today from Best Buy. Wasn't it a Tuesday release? Only spent an hour so far, but really digging the classic vibe.

I heard from a friend that soul calibur 6 was accidentally released to an e sports? event instead of a demo build.  I wonder if they did it on purpose?

Humble Bundle has a game bundle going on that may interest this thread for any PC games who don't regularly visit the Humble Bundle thread or Steam thread:

https://www.humblebundle.com/games/unity-bundle

$1:
- Oxenfree
- AER Memories of Old
- Unity Assets: Inventory Pro
- Unity Assets: UFPS: Ultimate FPS
- Unity Assets: FlowCanvas

Beat the Average (Currently $9.84):
- Wasteland 2: Director's Cut
- The Final Station
- Last Day of June
- Unity Assets: Realistic Effects Pack 4
- Unity Assets: Ultimate Game Music Collection
- Unity Assets: GameFlow

$15:
- Torment: Tides of Numenera
- Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun
- Unity Courses: Discover Unity Game Development - From Zero to 12 Games
- Unity Assets: uMMORPG
- Unity Assets: Heroic Fantasy Creatures Full Pack Volume 1
- Unity Assets: Universal Sound FX
- Unity Assets: Gaia

Only a few games, but the few that are included aren't bad. Shadow Tactics is a pretty good isometric stealth game set in a feudal Japan. Torment I haven't played much of, but it has some interesting options in how you can approach situations as an isometric CRPG. Finally you have Wasteland 2, which is a nice SRPG. For $15, it isn't that bad of a selection. Though if you subscribe to humble monthly, then you've possibly already received Shadow Tactics.

Feudal.

Feudal is the word your're looking for in regards to Shadow Tactics haha. And that game alone is making me consider grabbing this, as it looks awesome.

Gamestop has a 3 for 25 for preowned Games 14.99 and under. Shadow Tactics is eligible for the deal. Good deal if youre Gamestop has it along with two other titles youre inrerested in.

Yeah I figured it was something else. My mind is in power saving mode today. Now I just need to make sure not to auto-pilot the new recipe I was planning on making today for dinner...

The game is pretty good though. There is a demo available for it, so feel free to check that out.
