Japanese PS3 ebay prices going way down below profitability

For those that want them, the consoles are there. And not even at that much of a price, really. The intertubes have been flooded with consoles, and Yahoo! Auctions in Japan has the PLAYSTATION 3 coming out the whazoo. And at near deals at that!

The Associated Press reports that the 60 GB version has selling close to the retail price of 60,000 yen (US $510). And that's with software thrown in.

That is, many resellers might be losing money on their investments. The huge bids placed on Yahoo! turned out to be bogus and were cancelled. My question: Is this launch turning out to a total bust?

I wonder if this is any indication of what will happen with the US consoles? Only time will tell IMO.

I think there will be a few outlanidsh bids the first day, and even fewer that turn into real sales. The demand isn't as big as people think for this thing. Anybody can create an ebay account and bid $1,500 for a PS3. A lot fewer can(or would) pay that.
 
There are 5 games at release in Japan. Pretty lackluster to me. Why buy a system when there are no games to play?
 
Are online auctions that popular in Japan? I think in last week's CAGcast, Mrs. CheapyD mentioned the Japanese aren't as into online shopping, so maybe it's not very indicative of what's to come for the US (tho I certainly wouldn't mind).

I believe the japanese culture isn't typically up for putting their information online to purchase merchandise. They do not like sharing their bank account # or Credit Card # over the internet to purchase something online.

Call me whatever you want, but its still wrong to inconvenience people who has done nothing wrong againsts you.
 
If people are willing to camp to sell a ps3 whats keeping people from camping to keep one. I hate hearing people whine and moan saying its wrong to sell one on ebay when they can easily camp themselves. So far in my life I have camped 12 hours for a ps2 and 1 hour for a ps3 preorder. The ps2 I kept and the ps3 I plan to sell on ebay. I just graduated college and I got loans to pay now. If it bothers people so much, whats keeping them from camping out to get one to keep. 1 hour is not a lot of time, and yes I live in a major city and I drove around the night before and found a gamestop that had no campers and went there in the morning. Not hard to do at all. And yes I could be considered a "hardcore gamer" I have numerous 360 games and play them a lot. Also, I am a smart and patient gamer and can make some money and get a ps3 in march when they are readily available and all the bugs are fixed.

But if their hoarding makes it tough for me to get a PS3, that's justification right there. The eBayers are inconveniencing lots of people, and trying to profit at the expense of their fellow gamers. I'm not going to say they can't do that, but I will LMAO if they fail and don't make back their $600.

I am afraid you won't be laughing your ass off anytime soon.
They will make money and we will just have to wait till the market cools.
I want one too but will wait at a later time i guess. Again, call me whatever you want, i still think its wrong to disrupt other people's auction just because you are not the one making money.
 
The more likely reason for this is that yes, online shopping and credit cards are not trusted in japan. However, the point still stands that most of the $1.5k+ PS3 bids are going to be fakes or people who plan on doing chargebacks or other methods of scammery.
 
Hard to do a chargeback on the credit card if you demand payment by postal money order or certified check...

They'll easily go for over $1k on the bay, heck the 360 was going for over that and costs $200 less at retail.
 
Not only that, yahoo auction has many more sign up requiremnets than Ebay. I was asking my friend if he could get me some motorcycle parts off YAJ, but they require a japanese bank account to register. Ebay doesn't require you to give out any finicial informantion to them if you don't want to.

Well, that's ture somewhat, Though there are a grupo that needs to rely on mail order services, the Hikimori.
