If you're expecting Apocalypse Now you might be disappointed. I would have to say this movie is a combination of Full Metal Jacket and Black Hawk Down. Some action, but the main focus is on the brotherhood/family you become during a time of war. This has got to be one of the best military films ever made.

I must say I wasn't really looking forward to it but my friends wanted to see it. I actually ended up leaving the movie with a higher opinion than my friends.

Also, if you like the cinematography in American Beauty or Road to Perdition, there's some real interesting imagery in this film as well.

I loved this movie. Like the OP said, if you're expecting alot of action, you'll be disappointed. This movie is less about war and more about the Marine. It's a great film, but not a war movie or a typical one at least.

I wonder how it holds up to the book. The book was a good read... although I've been told that it's mostly fluff.

"Some action"? Horseshit, there's NO action.

It was great, though. Especially the first 30 minutes.

is jarhead another one of those bullshit patriotic "lets go blow people up movies that appeal to all the hicks in america" type movie or is it actually worth it?

Geez, a lot of people in here are saying it's good. I had just heard from a friend tonight that it wasn't. Heh. Maybe I'll go see it...

I was worried that it was going to be political, myself, and that was the reason I was reluctant to see it. However, I felt that there was really no political message from either direction in the movie.

Everyone is so use to seeing fabricated action and ones definition can sway from another. There was the mortar attack at the berm when Gyllenhal ran back for the battery. The Blue on Blue attack by the A-10's and the bombing of the control tower. Action yes! Fabricated action no!
Now that is a movie that looks highly political.
The best fiction tends to be based on fact

i want to slap jamie fox every time he says "hoorah". and how about the cheese dick whose standing in the middle of a mortar attack like he's superman. gimme a break. any real soldier would be under a sandbag. avoid like the plague(unless you like unrealistic crap)

Or it could just end up being heavy-handed bull shit. One way or another we'll find out eventually which one this is.

I don't believe it was unrealistic at all. Crazy or insane, yes. But still realistic. He wasn't all there at that moment. When he came to he was just as frightened as everyone else.

So thagoat, what branch of service did you serve in and for how many years? Also are your combat patches & ribbons from Desert Storm, Bosnia, Afghanistan or Iraq? Don't assume if you haven't served.

pure overdramatic crap. hoorah!
Well if you actually SAW the movie, you would think otherwise.

First off, Jamie Foxx was amazing, he played his part perfectly. He only says "hoorah" once in the whole damn movie. Which is funny because this part was in the trailer.

As for standing in the middle of a mortar attack, what was so unrealistic about it? You have no clue what's going on through the heads of these soldiers. Stuff like this is common. Their reactions are sometimes unnatural. This is also funny because this was in the trailer too. I'm starting to think you didn't even see the damn movie.

Overdramatic? You definitely didn't see the movie then. One of the film's flaws was that it lacked emotion. It needed more, not less. The scenes of emotion were all normal human actions.

Yes, the movie was great. I loved it. Definitely in my top ten of the year.

These movie was so similar to Full Metal Jacket... The first 30-45 minutes were amazing, and delivered constantly. Then the second half was strong, but lacked some of amazing lines as the first part. Im not saying its a bad thing because its one of the best movies I've seen this year.... I just wish it had been a little stronger.... Having said that, the scene in the tower is fucking amazing.
