JOB Hunting dilemma, need advice

Ok so I just started working at Toysrus 3 weeks ago in the rzone. Its fun and great but pays 7.75.

Out of nowhere Best Buy mobile calls me for an interview on friday. They had called me about a month back and said they would call for interviews within the week, I took the hint with them not calling me and went in for Toysrus.

I'm thinking I should go to Bestbuy mobile and explain to them what I"m telling you guys and see what they offer me but I wanna hear what you guys think.

This is a best buy mobile that is just about to open. I'm almost certain pay will be 8.50 and I will get more hours than in toysrus (except in xmas season).
I would also look like a jerk/feel guilty just leaving ToysRus like that.
 
um... why would you tell them what just happened? if you give them that story why would they want to hire you? " I just took this job till I can find something a little better. " is not something you need to say in an interview since they'll be thinking that you may not last 2 weeks with them.

All they need to know about your current job is what you do there and that you'll need to give a 2 week notice if you leave there.

If you get the job at BB then you can tell TRU that you want to work out a 2 week notice and explain that you were offered a better position with more hours/pay.

IMO a new company worth working for will allow you to work out the notice and the other company will appreciate it. Never burn bridges unless you're made to.
 
It is smart of you to examine this dilemma first before making a decision.
If this was a long term career oriented job, I might be hesitant to leave after such a short stay.
However, these are only entry level positions.
If Best Buy is indeed paying a $1 more, I would definitely switch positions.
Also, if you enjoy working at Toys R Us, you can always try to negotiate with them first before moving on to Best Buy.

You should also factor in the distance of each location to you. Is BB further, causing u to spend more in Gas? There goes that dollar.
 
Find out when the BB job starts and make sure that its not a temporary seasonal job. Most places are starting to gear up for the holidays.

There's not a single person there who would turn down a higher-paying job. The only way you'd be a jerk is if you didn't give them your two weeks. The Christmas rush is about to start, anyway, so people are going to be coming and going ad nauseum.
 
They're paying you close to minimum wage. I don't see why you'd have any loyalty. The only reason would be if someone was promising you a managerial position in a few months - then you might want to wait it out. But if not, fuck it.

This. And I don't see why you would get FEWER hours during the holiday season... I worked retail part time for three years back in HS and college and it was always a madhouse during the holidays.

Definitely explore your options with BB Mobile. TRU doesn't pay you well enough to have any loyalty.

Oh and its in the same exact location so no gas loss.

By the hours I meant that I will only get a nice stack of hours now during the holiday season and then it will prob revert back to this 10-15 hours a week type of shit.

I guess if they offer me the job I just gotta grow a pair and tell ToysRus whats up and give em the 2 week notice. Still though, pretty awkward after such a short time and everyone there being so warm and friendly.

Toys R' Us doesn't care about you that much. No business does. Let me tell you a lil' story- I got called into my manager's office a few years ago, and was told corporated downgraded our store level (different sales volume= different levels.) As a result, my position was being eliminated. I could either take the same job, but at part-time hours, or leave the company. I'd only gotten into the position from a part-time spot a few months earlier, and I got to keep the pay raise, so I opted to stay. My manager specifically told me my meeting was easy- he now had to call in another employee whose position was being fully eliminated... she could either quit or take a different part-time spot with less hours AND a pay cut. She'd worked in the store 17 years. Corporate just doesn't care.

If Best Buy'll do you better, just tell Toys R' Us you appreciate the opportunity, but a better position has become available to you elsewhere and you've decided to take it. They'll understand, you won't burn any bridges, and you'll make more money. Sounds good to me.
 
I really don't think it'll be awkward at all if you are professional (thank them for the job) and like everyone said, give them plenty of notice. Doubt they'd have any problems finding another clerk. Of course, be sure you actually have the job at BB before leaving.
 
Everyone has given solid advice (rare?). As long as no one "hooked you up" with the job at TRU then you're good. Just give them your 2 weeks notice and that's all you can do. Just so you know though, while you're not burning bridges per se, the odds of you ever being hired at a TRU again are low. Just leave it off your resume all together when applying for jobs in the future.

edit: I noticed you said "that you're almost positive that it pays more," definitely ask how much it pays when they offer you the position. Assuming you get it. Don't do anything at all with TRU until you get an offer in writing.
 
Corporate has no loyalty to you, even if you know someone in the company. As soon as someone finds a reason to not like you, or find someone cheaper, you're pretty much gone no matter what you've done for them in the past. This is how entry level retail positions work. It sucks.
 
One thing I will add - you will not be able to leverage your current job for a higher hourly wage at Best Buy, most likely. Part-time jobs are typically non-negotiable when talking about pay, benefits, etc.

Other than that, go for it.

I've got a couple of gigs going on but I am also waiting for these other full time jobs to get back to me. One is with the TSA (been a year since I applied for that job) and some other full time positions that will pay more than what I use to make. Without hesitation I will accept the first full time (with benefits) offer and put in my notice with the other part time positions. If the TSA calls me first, they got me first...if the other jobs I applied for call me and make me an offer and then the TSA calls me, well too bad for them.

Considering that I have already started these side jobs, yea I am going to put them in a pickle but they know I've been looking for a full time gig for awhile. If they aren't going to offer me a full time position, then they can go f' themselves. Believe me, I've applied but someone else gets the job.

Anyways OP be careful about this. Sounds like your just starting out and you don't want to burn too many bridges.... if you ever apply for something that requires a background check, believe me , that place will want to know the terms in which you left and this job may say some shit about you just to make you look bad. Make sure when you leave TRU you got something in writing with a date and signature from a manager stating leaving on good terms. Scan that document and save it/burn it to cd and store it somewhere safe. That way down the line if your former manager where to say some shit about you, well then you can put out that document and say, "well that's not what you thought about me years ago!"

Yeah that's what I'm afraid of, that if I do get the job, this little Toysrus situation will look terrible on my background and that when I let em know I'm out they may take it the wrong way. When I did the group interview with Toysrus I really milked it with how much I wanted to work there and so on. So yeah the whole situation is awkward.

Anyway Best Buy mobile rescheduled my interview for tomorrow morning so ill see what happens.

Oh and the difference is they know your looking for full time and not giving it to you so when/if you leave they shouldn't be surprised, I on the other hand come off as a snake in the grass.

This kind of thing happens all the time, my sister was in this same situation a couple months back and she took the new better job. Just make sure that you give your employer proper notice ahead of time, this is extremely important since any interviewer worth a damn will ask. You're not going to get blacklisted by leaving 1 job after a month.

Also don't worry to much about retaliation from a former manager, most big companies only confirm employment rather than give actual recommendations to avoid being sued. Besides I seriously doubt with the turn around at a place like TRU that a Manager would even remember your face let alone your name 6 months from now.:p

I had one former supervisor 5 years ago during a summer program I taught invited me to come back the following summer to teach again...when I applied for another job I put her down as a reference since usually if someone asks you to come back again that usually means your on good terms right? Nope, that bitch had the nerve to make some bs saying that I get frustrated when I never did anything like that during the summer program. That cost me a big job opportunity. When I confronted her about it, she had the nerve to lie to my face and deny it. uh huh...:roll:

Trust me, former supervisors will find some way to make you look bad even when you think you leave on good terms (2 weeks notice). They either don't want to train someone else new or was losing out on making themselves feel good about their life by making your work life miserable.
All they have to say is , "He/She wasn't what we were looking for / a good fit for our company.." without going into details and your screwed.

That's why when I leave a job, I have letters of recommendations backing me up with signatures so if shit is said about me, then I have proof to go by.
 
heh, I worked with TRU awhile ago. I was one of the guys that brought the stuff from the trucks to the floor very early morning.

My manager was kind of a bitch. When school came I immediately quit my job, no 2 week notice. In hindsight, maybe that was a very bad idea but I just do not want to put with my manager's shit any longer.

How? You thought you had no other prospects, so you really DID want the job at your interview. Besides, I can pretty much guarantee your interviewer knew you were full of shit in your enthusiasm... bullshitting is valuable retail skill. It's not good enough to able to find whatever people are looking for, you have to all but lie through your teeth to convince them that yes, you know the toy works this way becuase you personally have played with it extensively and didn't just read the back of the box- becuase you will get people who expect you to be that familiar with everything the store carries.

Seriously, just be polite about it and you'll be fine. It happens a lot in most places, actually.
 
So in conclusion, best buy mobile wasted my time. I swear the phone interview I had with them a couple months back was extensive lengthy. Then the actual interview consisted of pretty much the same exact questions we went over with on the phone and a few situation type questions.

I pretty much aced the interview and at the end the gm tells me what there offering is seasonal employment...wtf??!! And If I hustle and they like me and they will keep me, fuck outta here. Why don't they just find people that are unemployed and need jobs badly then.

lol oh at one point of the interview, the gm phone go's off with Lil Wayne and shit. good stuff
 
That sucks man, I take it the job at TRU isn't seasonal? I worked at TRU for a little under a year and I gotta say, holiday season was brutal. Just do your time at TRU and then look for a better job after 6 months or so.
 
Go in and see what Best Buy offers you. Don't tell them about the Toys R Us job. Trust me you are easily replaceable at Toys R Us. I worked their in my younger years and when I quit they gave me shit about just leaving. Years later know one even cares I worked there. If Best Buy offers you more money take it. And when somebody offers you more money somewhere else take that.
