Anyone else want this shirt I just made?!?!?!
Awesome shirt :D

Wow. Game sites might as well shut down their news sections until TGS 2006 cause they are getting mighty lame lately.

I hope Joystiq, or any other site, pulls a stunt like this again. fuckin' a.

I have to wonder what where you guys thinking it would be? Joystiq is a blog isn't it? Now I don't read blogs so I could be way off here, but why the hell would a blog have any thing worth a shit anyway, besides " mights be " or " we are lead to belive ". I find it hard to see any reason to still be pumped up for the Wii any ways, Nintendo has been the biggest dick tease about it .

You must not have ever had a girlfriend who played with you for an hour before any actual stuff happened.
I demand to fling poo at the entire Joystiq staff
Personally, I'm kind of hoping one of their pissed off members wil initiate a DOS attack on them.

Wow, what a trashy move to get hits on their website. They deserve all the disrespect they'll get for this one.
You must not have ever had a girlfriend who played with you for an hour before any actual stuff happened.
I can simple do with out any of the BS. Sure I'll be picking one up when it comes out, but I would rather they ether tell us something or don't. Getting a little to old too for the little hype games.

This was joystiq's doing, not Nintendo's, so get angry at their POS website.

Nintendo quite clearly said at E3 "more info will arrive later," and then announced the "party" or whatever on the 14th. They are being pretty deliberate.

As I said in another topic, they've already given us 95% of the information. We're down to minute details at this point.
Haha. Pretty funny stuff. Nice to see Wii will be soon.
Soon?!

The fricken Kiosks arent even out yet...

I doubt they'd release the Wii 2-3 days after they release the Kiosks.

Perhaps I am out of date on my Wii info then, has more info come out about the VC( pricing for games, any games they have ready for it, ect ) Also have they stated as of yet if the Wii will use a harddrive at all?

Has 512 megs of flash ram built in. Has SD card slots and USB ports for external hard drives.

Does not have a hard drive in the sense the 360 and PS3 have them.

VC games are rumored to be $1-2 for NES, around $5 for SNES, and "less than $10" for N64. But nothing concrete.

Like I said, that info comes on the 14th.

awww they are sowry

An apology, and a note on hype

Yesterday afternoon, we ran a post that generated an immense (and unexpected) amount of interest and speculation. Instead of defusing the prolonged PR tease that Nintendo has been escalating for the past year, we contributed to it. Instead of doing our readers a service, we added more confusion to the situation. The post was vague and left only room for disappointment which, inevitably, came at 12:01.

The worst part is, we understand that it was our hard-earned credibility that contributed to this excitement cocktail. There are gaming websites that trade in hype, and we've always prided ourselves on avoiding it. If we tell you that something is "major" and "worth waiting for," naturally you would expect it to be. As you've all no doubt noticed by now, news that IBM has begun shipping processors for Nintendo's Wii console, while potentially telling, is hardly the sort of megaton announcement we alluded to or fans were dreaming of. It became increasingly clear as the comments increased and the diggs increased, that we would reap what we had sown. Our credibility and reader trust are all we have, and we are taking measures immediately to ensure that we don't make this mistake again. We're very sorry for the error in judgment.

Sincerely,

Christopher Grant

ANONYMOUS does not forgive.

"The worst part is, we understand that it was our hard-earned credibility that contributed to this excitement cocktail."

Haha Don't worry so much. Your credibilty is half of what it was before so go ahead and drop the mega-ton announcment that the Wii will have a three pronged plug on the power supply. :D

Here's the blurb from 'Stiq's arch nemesis, Kotaku:

"Expect to hear some kinda interesting news about a very interesting upcoming console at 12:01 a.m. EST Friday. The embargoed news was sent out to a bunch of newspapers and websites with the understanding that no one would print the information until first thing in the morning.
While I'm sure you will all find it endlessly fascinating, in the end it really won't get you any closer to the news most people want to know.
Make sure to head back to Kotaku one minute into tomorrow to read the details and see a wee bit of analysis."

After reading this, it was almost a giveaway, but still a lot more realistic than what Joystiq did.

Actually, Kotaku's latest post as of this writing is pretty telling--Super Paper Mario is going to be a Wii-exclusive? Bummer. It's not like I'm not getting a Wii eventually, but I was looking forward to playing that game on my 'Cube as I can only suck so much at Ikaruga...

I dont know if this has been posted...

But the Wiimote itself has 6kb of space on it, so you can save your settings and name. (IE sensitivity.)

The only reason why people think DMC4 is coming to 360 because of Dead Rising well and most Xbox 360 fans don't want to buy a PS3, so they're hoping it will come to Xbox 360. IMO, it won't happen.
I can officially guarantee this "major next-gen console news" is going to be lame.
Damn I'm good.

The best part of all this hype was this Fourm...I didn't enen go to Joystiq to find out the news!

BTW, DMC 4 is STILL coming to 360...Bwahahahahaaha!

Wow, people on this forum take things way too seriously. Maybe it was a little exaggerated, but what do you expect considering the slow news of the past few months? Grow up people. Just because the news didn't meet your expectations of significant doesn't mean others won't find it fascinating.

I have some bills in my pocket.

I tell you it's between 1 dollar and 5,000 dollars.

I then proceed to tell you "I'll give you this, but you won't get it until tomorrow."

You sweat for a while.

So then I start to say things like "Ok, I'll give you a hint. It's a lot."

You sweat some more.

So I egg you on. "Oh it's a lot, you'll be able to buy so much stuff, it will make you happy and you'll think this is a highlight of your month."

You ask me how much it is, throwing out a guess every other minute or so.

I egg you on more. "Oh, it's more than ____. It's more than ___. C'mon man, I already told you it's a lot! And I'm going to give it to you! This is so awesome you won't even believe it. In fact I'll give you a hint - there's lots of large bills in here."

This goes on and on for a good 10 hours.

At the end, I finally show you what I had - twenty dollars.

You are super disappointed, but you get mad about how "why did you even tell me it was in the thousands when you knew what you had? And why even keep me around for this?"

The difference is that while you were sitting around waiting for me to tell you, I was making lots of money by grabbing your attention. It benefitted me more than you to even stick around. Sure, you get twenty bucks, but in retrospect, you wouldn't have stuck around for twenty bucks. You'd have not gone through the trouble.

It was news, but it wasn't near the level they hyped it up to be, especially when they knew what they had on their hands.

Just because a handful of nerds think shipping IBM chips is cool doesn't make it a "major story" when thousands and thousands of nerds were on the internet within minutes registering their disgust throughout the world.

Good Stuff Here.

This announcement wouldn't have been bad if it hadn't been brought up a dozen times in the comments on Joystiq. The story was posted elsewhere before Joystiq's teaser post, even. Once embargos are broken by someone, I'm fairly certain you're under no obligation to continue maintaining the embargo - meaning they did it just to garner hype, which is disgusting.

But obviously, once it's posted a dozen times and no mention is made of its validity, people discard that as the news and their expectations are much higher.
Good Stuff Here.
I think most of the hype was done by the readers. I have never seen any story gather that many comments so quickly. Over 400 or 500 I think? The readers hyped the hell out of the story.

Also, comparing news to money is irrelavent. News won't pay the bills etc.

I'm not saying people shouldn't be disappointed, but the level of emotion involved in this is astounding. People need to realize we're talking about a blog about luxuries that no one even needs to survive. It's not like it's life or death. If people cared as much about other social issues as this news story, astounding things could be accomplished. I'm just saying maybe we need a reality check here people.

Whoa.

Talk about hyperbole.

You know if I didn't eat food, I could ship it across seas to people who'd eat it too.

trying to talk reason to a die-hard subculture really doesn't work...but you can understand it if you want. especially when it comes to gamers, the Fall/Winter launch season AND new system launches on top of that. Strell's point fits perfectly-- it's a good metaphor if you understand the hype around system launch time. we bring the hype on ourselves, but that's the way we like it :D

but man, the whole "if people expended this much energy into something else" line kind of embarasses us all...it may certainly be true, but it doesn't help this thread along and there's a good chance you'll just get made fun of. but hey, if it touches one person, then all the more power to ya...

Did anyone really expect Joystiq to have a breathtaking announcement at 12:01 am EST? Come on now. It's Joystiq. What are their credentials? They know how use some open source web software?

Actually they gained some creditibility by actually putting out some real information this time albeit pretty useless.

Strell is exactly right. It's not really the fact that they said it would be a "major" annoucement, it's the fact that Robert Summa kept coming into the comments section and pumping up the hype over and over.

The comments would have probably trailed off at 200 or so if he wouldn't have kept posting that it was worth waiting for and that he wished he could tell what it was before midnight, but he couldn't.

Joystiq should have realized very quickly that the hype for this story (which was created by them) far outweighed the importance of what was going to be reported. At that point they shold have managed everyone's expectactions or shut down the comments section or something.

That's Funny.

So Joystiq has fallen off it's high horse and has become the same hype machine they mock.

From now on everything Joystiq posts should be labeled "MegaTon".

So it wasn't as if it was beyond belief that it could have been something big that most outlets were aware of.

I'm disappointed but not mad. I heard about the hype, but failed to care or wait hours upon hours at my compuer waiting for 12:01 EST to hit. I went to play Saint's Row for a couple hours, came by, saw the posts, went "meh", and went back to Saint's Row.

I did not realize he was stoking the coals in the comments section. That helps it make some more sense to me.

Trust me, I understand pre-launch hype. I would have had a 360 on launch day if I didn't have to help my wife tear down her high school's fall play set. I couldn't get in line soon enough. Luckily, I got my 360 on Dec. 4 so it wasn't too much of a wait. I'll get a Wii at or near launch too.

This whole debacle makes me kind of glad that E3 is being toned down. I hated how everybody kept major news quiet so they could tell it at E3. I understand using announcements to build hype etc, but now we've got announcements about announcements which is getting ridiculous. The Gears of War thing on the Epic boards was a joke. I hope in the future news is simply released when it is instead of news about news.
