Jump Ultimate Stars, worth it if you are not an anime fan?

That is EXACTLY what I want to know, I really think the game will be awesome, but I don't know if I'd like it because of the anime/manga stuff.

But just the fact that it has WiFi, 4 player Super Smash Bros-esque fighting, will warrant its purchase.

You don't need to be an anime fan (or more accuratly, a Jump manga fan), but you will need patience and an FAQ if you want to unlock and build up your Pages.

This isn't a traditional fighter, for one, you don't select just one fighter, rather you build a Manga page that can have up to three seperate playable characters on it. You have to learn how to build pages, what characters to use, as well as support, or you're going to get slaughtered on Wi-Fi. Also, the gameplay isn't nearly as deep as SSBM.

I can't speak for JUS, but I imported Jump Superstars back when it came out in Japan and it was awesome.

If JUS is anything like JSS, you get koma pieces, or comic strip outlines, when you win fights. Some are big outline, others are characters.

You need to fit the characters into the comic to unlock characters.

So, like, there migght be an outline that says "BETTER BELIEVE IT!!111!1!". So you'd stick Naruto's face in there and if it fits, unlock Naruto.

Except it's in Japanese, so you'd need a FAQ for that, as well as knowing what your level objectives are.

But yes, I loved JSS and plan to import JUS soon, and don't read manga much at all.

It's different in JUS, I heard its a LOT easier than that now :)

EDIT: Woah, completely misread the title.

I've only played JSS and Bleach, and were I not a fan of anime, I would prefer Bleach for it's fighting. Personally, I would not have gone through the effort to import JSS had I not been a fan of the different manga series. For me, half the fun was playing as some of my favorite characters, and trying to unlock 7-koma Ichigo.

It always takes me second when people mention Naruto's US tagline. Sigh, Naruto was so much cooler before they brought it here.

I already know how the game plays, sillies. I've done research. ;)

Still... I'm not sold. I think I'll just let this one pass on by.

I have to say that I am far from an anime/manga fan. I ended up buying this game because I've heard that it plays like Smash Bros. with online play. I went in skeptical but, a week later, I ended up 15 hours in. The art style that I thought I would hate, is not as abrasive as I thought it would be.

Honestly its a great game and one I see myself playing for a long time. Thats saying a lot considering many DS games are on the short side.

I'm pretty sure japan screwed up first, throwing story aside in favor of becoming "Ninja Ball Z" Funimation has nothing on the people who were in favor of that lame move.

I'd say no. While it is a solid little fighter, a lot of the game's appeal is in geeking out over being able to have Seiya blast away with his Pegasus Meteor on Goku or having a swords throw down with Zoro, Ichigo, Kenshin, and Gintama. I started five different shows because of Jump Ultimate Stars to get a better feel for the game and the various characters. If that doesn't appeal to you, the game probably won't. It takes a ton of patience to play this game and the geek out factor is one of the few things that keeps me coming back to it.

As for the "ease" of the unlock system, huh? Sure, it was a pain in the ass to get everything unlocked, but at least you could do it relatively quickly. With the evolution system, there is no good way to get gems on a regular basis. I've put 30+ hours in and it'll still take me another extra 10 of playing against the computer and mashing buttons in the trivia contest to earn the rest of the characters.

Finally, Naruto is a pretty mediocre show period. It's side characters are much more interesting then the main characters, but they're introduced and shoved to the side so we can watch angsty shouting matches with a few attacks tossed in to make it a "fight". Also, Naruto has some of the shittiest and most inconsistent animation ever.
