Just bought a PS3. Is it supposed to be this hot?

It's only been on for about 20 minutes doing a system update and it's already as warm as my 360 would be after gaming for hours. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? (I do like the new car smell of warm freshly manufactured plastic. :whistle2:s )

It's in an open entertainment center and the vents are not blocked. You can just feel the warmth radiating from it. (It's not hot to the touch. Just warm like its been on for a while.)

I'm sorry, I can't resist.

Seriously, I hope your system is ok.

No it does get warm, but it shouldn't EVER get hot. I've had mine on for hours with Folding and it does get warm around it like you say, but when you touch it, it isn't as hot as you might expect. So... For now I'd say it is normal, though others might have other thoughts.

Just have it in a open, well ventilated area. If you have it vertically standing, the only place it should be hot is on the top on the right side where all the ventilation goes. I've had my PS3 on for a month now for folding and it's hot, but not to the point where you think it'll overheat.

It's a well designed system. I don't think Sony would pack in over $800 worth of technology in a PS3 and have it overheat so easily.

It gets hot from the area where it shoots the air out but it doesn't cause the ps3 any damage of overheating like the 360 but if you really find it alarming buy a cooler for it.

the warmth radiates upward if you have it vertical, like a campfire. It's a great heater during the wintertimes.

oh no... I just bought a 360, and the ps3 is no where near as hot as the 360... I should do a you tube video and take the tempeture of both.... but the ps3 does get hot... I have my ps3 sitting out in the open, and I've been using it for long hours... and no problems... the main thing is to not crowd the ps3, or the 360... gotta let it get the heat out.

My PS3 doesn't even get warm, but the air it pushes out can get a bit toasty. I used to keep it horizontal, but now its vertical due to space constraints. I've never had any problems either way.

might feel a bit warmer what with the hot weather comin in too

either folding for hours or gaming for hours, so far it hasn't been hot enough for me to feel cautious about.

Your PS3 has a problem.

Not really, it plays fine, and I leave it on for days at a time while I'm folding.

Both of the consoles are very well ventilated, but the PS3 gets really hot in the back.

Same here. My ps3 gets hot from the air vents and the back. If you touch it long enough it burns. And I tested my brother's ps3 and it's the same

Sorry about my earlier post.

Other people have been noticing hot PS3's http://kotaku.com/gaming/notag/ps3-kills-xbox-360-257364.php
(PS3 heat red ringed a nearby 360)

There are good suggestions in this thread such as keeping it upright, away from other components, and at the highest shelf. Heat rises.

You may also want to mount case fans in your entertainment center to waft the heat away. I was able to ventilate my CLOSED entertainment center with about $40 at this site. http://coolerguys.com/ho.html
the way the ps3 airflow works actually is better when it's standing up
