Well, I figured I'd start the "worst" Castlevania first to start the series. I know, it doesn't make much sense, but considering I liked it a lot, I'm sure the rest of the series will be even better.

So, I have:

Symphony of the Night
Circle of the Moon
Aria of Sorrow
Dawn of Sorrow
Portrait of Ruin

I want to make sure that if the new games will "spoil" with new features and significantly better graphics, that I play the old games first. But if I can play Portrait of Ruin and go back to the older ones at any time, I'll do that, since it cost me the most and it is the newest.

Which one would you reccomend I start next?

Lament of Innocence

Just kidding. But seriously, it isn't THAT bad of a game, I enjoyed it for what it was. If you want to start with the worst thats going to be your best bet aside from the N64 games. Symphony of the Night is my favorite out of the ones you listed, I'd play that if you happen to own it.

well CotM is made by a different team. make sure you play Symphony of the Night last and Dawn of Sorrow after Aria of Sorrow. so play CotM, Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow, PoR, then SotN
HoD was bad. I actually really enjoyed CotM. Dawn is by FAR the best, even better the PoR
Dawn is way better than PoR. PoR had some unique ideas, but lack of polish and lazy level designs killed it.

I'd go with Aria then into Dawn. :)

Harmony of Dissonance is far from the worst game in the series. It's better then any of the 3D Castlevanias by a lot. I'd say go with Circle of the Moon or SoN. Aria of Sorrow should be played before Dawn though because Dawn is a direct sequel set one year after Aria. Dawn reuses a lot of the sprites from SoN as well if that's a turn off for you.

the way i see it, no matter what you start out with, if you play the games all in a row or in a relatively short period of time, no matter how good they are (and SotN = perfection) you will get burned out of the familiar gameplay, familiar castle layout, familiar enemies, familiar ect. ect...

so, my advice is stop what you are doing, plug in Symphony, enjoy/savor every moment, and don't play the rest for awhile. you will greatly appreciate SotN (as well you should) and blah blah blah

That's a really good point. I may just go back to some other DS games, or maybe start up the my much neglected copy of FFXII.

I'd say do Aria. I was totally stoked by that game, and I think it's a huge improvement over Harmony (more souls, less ignorant wandering) while still avoiding DS gimmicks like DoS. Then, you can move to PoR and finally the grand-daddy, SotN, if you're still feeling the series' vibe. I beat all of the 'Vanias from Symphony on, by the way.

Start off with Circle of the Moon. It may feel slow-paced and obsolete if you play it after, say, Aria of Sorrow. It is a great game, though.

Circle of the moon, because it has the most amazing replay value of any of the handheld ones IMO

I love the special ability runthroughs
