We have had several dogs before but never really puppies. We always adopted older dogs and completely intended to do so this time too however while out shopping there was a animal rescue even which we stopped at and while there fell in love with an adorable 20 week old pug. We always said that while we would adopt older dogs at least once we would get a puppy and raise him ourselves just for the joys, frustration and what not of it. Few pics at the bottom and since people will ask for names ill say we arnt sure yet. He came with the name bonkers but he doesn't respond to it so we can change it. Currently we are leaning towards Razputin after the main character from psychonauts. We want something unique and from a game/movie/show we both like.

Raising a puppy though is a complelty different thing then buying an older foster dog! We have been reading online but still have a few general questions and it always good to ask the opininon of people you know have first hand experience not just the "experts".

So here are the questions.

1. We are crate training him and I am wondering during the day how long should he be in the kennel and how long should he be out of it? We keep reading he should be in it for awhile out but not exact times. Yesterday we were doing about an hour or two in the kennel then immediatly leashing him and taking him out to his spot then giving him about an hour outside of the kennel before putting him back in for an hour or two of rest(then repeat process).

2. Should the kennel be in the room we are in most of the day or always in the bedroom where we sleep. We found conflicting sources on this. Some say to kennel the dog in the busy room then kennel him in ours at night. Yesterday we just kept him kenneled in our bedroom since it was quite in there and he seemed ok with it.

3. At night do we let him sleep through the night or do we need to get up with him several times? My fiancees parents trained their dog in the crate and woke up every 2 or 3 hours to let him out to use the bathroom. Do you guys recommend doing this or no put him in the crate then take him out when we get up? Last night we went to bed at 11 and got up at 6 because that was when we heard him scratching at his kennel/awake and tried to take him out immediately but he peed AT the door to go outside(darn just missed it!). So what do you guys say? Sleep through the night or take him out several times a night.

4. Final thing I can think of. We already have a 4 year old(well roughly since she is a rescue and her age is unknown)Cocker Spaniel. The new puppy is constantly trying to eat her food and showing no interest in his. Is there something anyone can recommend to help him start on his own food and stay off hers? We would let him eat her food but its for full grown dogs where his is for puppies. Also anyone know if heating it up with a small amount of water is bad? Sometimes when our older dog loses interest in her food we do that and it works but we didn't know if a puppy might be too sensitive for that trick.

Face shot I just took of him with me

Alright I went through this about 10 months ago. We also have a new puppy, he is a Golden Retriever named Pullo.

1. We also crated him, but I only left him in the crate for about an hour at a time, then let him out, but we set it up to invite him into the crate, we never forced him, or used it as punishment. You should never ever use the crate as a place for punishment. You want to make the crate a place where you dog has his own area (space) and he later will actually just go in if you leave the door open. If our dog gets very tired he will still go in his crate if we keep playing with him.

2. We left the kennel in our livingroom. In fact we never let our dog in our bedroom. The reason, that's our bedroom, not his. He has his own room, that's the livingroom, kitchen, dining room, that's enough. And later, you or your wife might let the dog on your bed, that's a big no no.

3. We, actually I, woke up every 1 to 2 hours for about 4 months straight at night and fully potty trained our dog. We never let him go long hours at night. We did make him wait 2-3, then 4-5, then 6 hours during the day. Now he has never made any mistake after 5 months.

4. You should have separate eating areas for the dogs and try to get your dog to obey some commands before he eats. And you have to have a set time of the day to feed him. Feed them at the same time, but make your puppy do stuff for his food, then he will actually go for it and eat it. Our dog won't eat until he does his tricks now. Its awesome.

Ya holy crap it blew my pics up! Anyone know if there is a way to make them smaller?

Soundwav thanks for the advice.

We didn't crate train my dog.. We just kept him in the house and let him out every few hours to use the restroom. If he peed in the house we brought him over and held his nose in it for about 10 seconds saying "noooo...nooooo", then put him outside. After 3-4 "accidents", he got the idea that this was a bad thing and never did it again. You need to punish your dog if he pees on the carpet using this method. He must understand that it is unacceptable to go in the house. Let him know it's wrong, and whenever he waits until he's outside make sure to give him treats and praise for it. He should get the picture fairly quickly.

Our toy poodle just turned 1 year old last month and I almost completely agree with s0undwav3.

1. I would only add for crate training that we fed her in or near the crate, hoping for a positive association.

2. We too left the kennel in the living room and never the bed room for the same reasons as s0undwav3, and partly because the bedrooms are carpeted.

3. Because there are five people in my house with different schedules, our puppy was never alone for more than 5 hours at night. If you don't mind cleaning up the accidents in the morning, you don't have to get up as often. To help prevent accidents at night, we took away her water bowl an hour or two before bed time.

4. Sorry, no suggestions about the food problem. We only have the one dog and she doesn't seem to like any food for longer than a couple of weeks. Our vet was the one who suggested warming up the food with a little water. It has not upset her stomach. It is usually the only way she will eat it.

Once they're done loading, the forum shrunk them down for me. It should automatically do that.

Doesn't always work :(

You should use spoiler tags or resize the files then post them.

Yeah. But they're still the same colossal filesize.

You need spoiler tags for each picture. Those things are really slowing down the page.

Fair warning, I hope you like looking at buttholes and ballsacs. I know someone who has a pug and they're on full display. Their dog also has some kind of respiratory problem. He wheezes like he's smoked 2 packs a day for 20 years. I don't know if that's common with pugs but just a heads up.

It is. Respiratory problems are extremely common with pugs. Eye problems too.

That's okay, as it's an even trade. The puppy will be forced to watch the OP "masterubate" 30 times a day.
