I have never seen the original Clerks, or any Jay and Silent Bob films, Clerks II was my first and I totally loved it. I want to get the first one on DVD.
 • What's the best version to get, do they have the first movie in color?
 • How many cartoon volumes are there?
 • What other Kevin Smith films are sure bets if I liked Clerks II?
 • Anyone know of any good deals beside DDD.com?
Thanks in advance.

Clerks
Mallrats
Chasing Amy
Dogma
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Jersey Girl
Clerks Animated Uncensored
An Evening With Kevin Smith
An Evening With Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder

There are 2 versions of Clerks out there, the original 1 disk and the newer better? Clerks X (10th anniversary edition) No colorized versions as I recall.

Same with Mallrats, the original was a single sided disk, and the newer one is a flipper, with new stuff on the second side.

the Animated series is a total of 6 episodes spread across the 2 disks

For Dogma, there are 2 versions out there as well, a single disk version, and a 2 disk version

I really recommend the evening with... dvd It is excellent beyond words, and part 2 comes out in octoberish.

At one point, I read about a potential double dip for Jersey Girl, but I doubt that it will happen anytime soon.

I have all of them, but only the original clerks, not the X special 10th anniversary edition, but that is on my list of things to get..

clerks x is my personal fav since it has the first cut of the film as well as the theatrical... this is about 25 bucks. Mallrats is another must have, but you need to get the newer tenth anniversary one since it has the extended version. There is only one cartoon volume which imo isnt really worth it since its a few episodes. Also, Chasing Amy is another fav of mine however it gets mixed reviews since it is more of a dark drama. Id suggest watching Jay and silent bob strike back, than mallrats, than clerks. For some odd reason I feel you won't enjoy Clerks as much as you think you will, and that is why I suggested it last.

Clerks X is the best version of Clerks, with all kinds of new features and stuff. It's all black-and-white.

As for Clerks the Animated Series, there's just the one with only 6 episodes.

For the other Clerks movies in the same universe, more or less, there's Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and Mallrats (which also has a 10th anniversary edition like Clerks X). Jersey Girl is very loosely (read: barely) tied to the other films, but it's pretty much nothing like the rest of his movies. You should also get An Evening With Kevin Smith, which consists of Kevin and sometimes Jason Mewes (Jay) going to a bunch of colleges to answer questions and tell funny stories about making the Clerks movies.

As for deals, just check the ad threads to see if any are on sale. BB has Jay and Silent Bob as part of their 3 for $25 sale, which if you find other movies you want it's a good deal. They also have Dogma as part of their Buy 1 Get 1 Free Special Edition sale, as well, so pick something else you'd like and you've got a good deal. As for Clerks X, I got mine for $20 at BB last Christmas on sale, so if you find it for any cheaper, it's a good deal. Just keep an eye out for the others whenever they're on sale and pick them up. Enjoy.

I think that answers all or most of your questions.

Saw second clerks wasnt bad. I love the 1st clerks. But Jay and Silent Bob is a classic to me. Mallrats not bad. Then Dogma good but too religious. Chasing Amy different film good. Jersey Girl horrible tries to be the straight version of Chasing Amy. Saw 1st Evening with Kevin smith was good. Definatelly get the clerks x version.I love the documentary on it. Animated series is great pick that up too. And its cheap like 10-12 bucks.

Clerks X is awesome. It has the original and recut version of the movie. JandSB Strike Back is also loads of fun. Honestly those are the only 2 older KS movies that I've seen. I really need to buy some more.

Clerks 2 was really good. It was really really explicit (more than I had expected) so if you are like 16 you probably will feel uncomfortable going to it with your parents. Luckily I just went with friends.

This is off topic (kinda) but is Dogma as inappropriate as Clerks 2 (can I watch it around my parents or will they start talking about donkey shows?)

The Clerks X dvd is definitely the one to get. It has the theatrical and uncut version as well as an amazing documentary over an hour long about the making of the movie. In my opinion, it's one of the best dvd's compiled ever.

Their is only 1 volume of the Clerks cartoon. Too be %100 honest, I'm a huge Kevin Smith fan, but these cartoons aren't that great.

Everyone above has listed all this movies so I'm just going to suggest what other movies you should get of his.

fraggedbylaggers: No, their are no talks of donkey shows in Dogma. Dogma is probably his least vulgar movie. I don't know what level of tolerance your parents have for that type of humor but i think you should be ok.
I believe that if you liked Clerks you would very much like Jay and Silent Bob, to me that is the 3rd best laugh out loud movie that he has made, Clerks I and II are his funniest I believe.

I just think it is amazing you went to see Clerks 2 without ever seeing the first...

of course the first is ONLY AVAILABLE in B&W... it was very low budget

My favs are Clerks and Chasing Amy

Mallrats has grown on me, hated Dogma (too much hyperactive rambling on incessantly by characters in this film), Jay and Silent Bob was ok (had big expectations for this), hadnt seen any of the others, kinda grew cold on KS until Clerks 2 was announced... it was decent but not as good as the first

Buy Chasing Amy. Its hands down Kevin Smith's best work imo. That movie made me into a fan of Ben Affleck. Also Jersey Girl is much better than people give it credit for, but it is not in the view askew universe.

I'm really suprised at the negative reaction here to the cartoons. I loved them. They're a very different type of humor compared to the movies. And they're super cheap now, like $10 for the 2 disc 6 episode set.

I LOVED the cartoon. Ive seen every episode way to many damn times. Remember, this aired on ABC...its not like it could be really crudeor anything like that. They did get away with a few things.

I was really hoping to see Leonardo Leonardo and Ping in Clerks II!

Thanks guys you have been a lot of help. Oddly enough I Chasing Amy was my first Kevin Smith file I saw. I never knew he made it though. I have seen Dogma which was OK and Jersey Girl which was OK as well.
Don't forget their DVD Jay and Silent Bob do Degrassi Unrated :)
Oh jesus for the love of god no. That show is soooooo bad, and even Kevin Smith couldn't do anything to make it watchable.
Any free shipping codes or anything else like that?
I think, and I could be wrong, if you sign up for their newsletter you get free shipping for a few days. Might need to look into that though.

The commentary is humorous in that it's one long commentary for all six episodes where they basically talk about how they wish they had chosen the 20 episode deal with UPN over ABC and how the show got screwed over by debuting against Survivor.

I always wondered why there was a monkey at the end of mallrats (I think it was mallrats) with jay and silent bob. And that monkey didn't really play a big part in the jay and silent bob movie.

Don't forget Scream 3. Jay and Silent Bob are in that too.

And for anyone that mentioned Jersey Girl, that has no relation to any of the preceding 5 films. That would be like adding Vulgar to the list of J&SB movies.

I have seen JandSB (great flick). Thanks for the scoop on Dogma. My parents are always around so I just wanted to make sure there was nothing too crazy.
For anyone interested in Chasing Amy:

Criterion Collection edition is 10.96 at Overstock.com
DAMN! Thanks for the tip, that's all I'm missing besides the evening with... movies. Need to get the 10th for Clerks and Mallrats to replace, though.

But WTF is up with the box for these movies? $3x? C'mon Kevin. At least it isn't as bad as your replica coat. Holy shit, my suit was less than that.

I'm going to hold out on bying the Clerks and Mallrats movies. I'm hoping when the sequel gets released on DVD, they'll have a set/different versions/cheaper. I can wait.

Bear is driving, how can this be!

I know I'm in the extreme minority here, but I think Dogma may be my favorite.
I loved Alan Rickman as Metatron "Dos tequilas, por favor" and Jason Lee as Azreal (sp?) "No sin greater than central air". Even the deleted scenes are good "Family Ties.............. Alex P. Keaton like a motherfucker!"

must agree with you y2jedi... I thought Dogma was one the better films in that it connected on many levels of humor. It's got both the slapstick elements, and more sophisticated humor which touch on organized religion, pop culture, and personal identity.

See, I just don't care for Dogma all that much on account of I find it too preachy. Same thing with Chasing Amy. I know a lot of people claim Chasing Amy as their favorite Smith film but I just didn't care for it because of the preachiness. As for the Clerks animated series, I thought it was hilarious and it's worth getting the DVDs just for the commentary alone. Pretty much the entire commentary on every episode is spent bitching about ABC, and it's thoroughly entertaining.

Yeah, but that was the point. In both repsects, he did very well.

the only movies i really like in the series are clerks, dogma, the animated series, and clerks 2.

mallrats...my god. i loved that movie when i was a wee laddy and tried watching it again recently. it really has not aged well. the guy who plays TS is so laughably bad. while the occasional spotty acting was forgivable in clerks (hell, it was part of it's charm), it was just painful to watch that guy fuck up nearly every single line he was given every time he was on camera. the sub plots, the minor and supporting characters, all golden. jason lee was just as funny as i'd remembered. despite all that, it's still extremely hard to overlook the fact that 60% of the film is focused on, and derailed by, TS and his incredibly dry and equally acting-challenged girlfriend. i assume there's a reason that guy was never in any of the other movies.

One of these days they are gonna release a Kevin Smith box set and Im gonna be there! BTW I mean only view askew productions, screw jersey girl.

The problem with that, as I'm aware, is that different companies released it. IE, never going to happen. That's why he is selling a box (http://jsbstash.stores.yahoo.net/jertrilboxse.html), but that's too damn expensive.

I'll be making my own at some point.
