Mirecki hospitalized after beating

Douglas County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the reported beating of a Kansas University professor who gained recent notoriety for his Internet tirades against Christian fundamentalists.

Kansas University religious studies professor Paul Mirecki reported he was beaten by two men about 6:40 a.m. today on a roadside in rural Douglas County. In a series of interviews late this afternoon, Mirecki said the men who beat him were making references to the controversy that has propelled him into the headlines in recent weeks.

“I didn’t know them, but I’m sure they knew me,” he said.

Mirecki said he was driving to breakfast when he noticed the men tailgating him in a pickup truck.

“I just pulled over hoping they would pass, and then they pulled up real close behind,” he said. “They got out, and I made the mistake of getting out.”

He said the men beat him about the upper body with their fists, and he said he thinks they struck him with a metal object. He was treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

“I’m mostly shaken up, and I got some bruises and sore spots,” he said.

The sheriff’s department is looking for the suspects, described as two white males between ages 30 and 40, one wearing a red visor and wool gloves, and both wearing jeans. They were last seen in a large pickup truck.

Mirecki recently wrote online that he planned to teach intelligent design as mythology in an upcoming course. He wrote it would be a “nice slap” in the “big fat face” of fundamentalists.

The remarks caused an uproar, Mirecki apologized, and KU announced last week the class would be canceled.

You know, when driving, I pissed off this guy, once. So he decided to follow me, much like this christian pickup. However, unlike the professor (whom we all assumed was smart), I actually gave the chaser a trip through suburbia until they gave up.

For those who to read more about it, go straight to source articles of this story.

That does a search for Professor Mirecki on the Lawrence Journal World website

They have several articles covering the fallout as well as letters to the editor and other opinion pieces regarding this matter. This was asked in the original thread, the course was an upper level undergraduate course.
Now if only someone would assasinate Howard Dean, John Kerry and Schmuckie Schumer we'd have ourselves worth talking about.
Ahh because if someone doesn't agree with you the only option is to kill them?
I actually did that act one night in the south, then after the show these three rednecks came up to me. "Hey buddy, we're christians and we didn't like what you said". I said "Then forgive me". Later on, when I was hanging from the tree...
To be fair, OP, he wasn't just criticizing intelligent design, but openly mocked christians who believe in it. While I'm more than happy to do so myself, I'm not the chair of a religious studies department, nor would I dare build a bridge between my beliefs and what I teach (such that the former affects the latter negatively, or creates classroom bias).

That having been said, it certainly looks like the arguments of those on the side of intelligent design are starting to lose their intellectual foundation.

I'd try them for treason or sedition but no one has the stomach or balls to do what rightfully should be done.

Where's a gun toting maniac when you really need one?

Well who is more likely to be treasonous? The one who focuses on the flag and "america", or the one who focuses on the constitution and the principles that america is supposed to represent?

One document that had a major influence on the constitution is the "virginia declaration of rights". In this document it states

"That no free government, or the blessings of liberty, can be preserved to any people but by a firm adherence to justice, moderation, temperance, frugality, and virtue and by frequent recurrence to fundamental principles."

The constitution and the founding of this nation was in that mindset. Thomas Jefferson even believed in the right of revolution. The idea that it is wrong to speak out against the behavior of your government, to say your leaders have lied etc. would have been foreign to those who established the principles we so value.
