If you thought that Killzone 2 had been looking too good to be true, then it's quite possible you were correct in your assumption. Developer Guerilla has admitted that the last batch of screenshots had been "touched up" to make them look better than they actually were. Bad form, you dirty boys. Bad, bad form.
Guerilla's Seb Downie made the confession on the official PS3 forums, trying to justify the misleading promotional material by saying the enhancements were only small:
They are only the tiniest bit touched up. Short answer is yes. Long answer is that there was a little bit of colour-correction done and some minor polish, but nothing major. Still very close to reality and it looks better in motion in my opinion.
Frankly, I think it's a pretty crappy stunt to pull on the people following this game. We'd already been lied to once before when the infamous "demo" footage for Killzone 2 a few years back turned out to be CGI, and now they're admitting to altering screenshots to make them look better. Touching up pictures may work for supermodels and pornstars, but when games are judged on how they actually look, this kind of underhanded behavior is not cool and not something any consumer should condone.
It's worrying how obsessed with the graphics Guerilla and Sony seem to be with Killzone games, to the point of lying about them. Might explain why the first one had such disappointing gameplay. Stop trying to wave your graphics-peen around and actually concentrate on making a good game, please.

I guess all I can say is wow. Kinda had my doubts that this one can't possibly be as good as it's looking, but that's not to say it won't be a graphically impressive game.

Can't say I'm that surprised, it's not like they haven't blatantly lied about this game before.

But I'm sure it won't turn out to be crap, like the first one.

I don't really understand why they don't just add in these colour palettes within the game, instead of altering screenshots.

Gray is the fugliest and boring colour ever, and that's what I've mostly been seeing in the virgin screenshots. They could have avoided the impending shitstorm by adding the awesome palette (game still looks good nonetheless).
I don't know of a game where they don't touch up the pictures prior to release.
Halo screen shots are not touched up, you can tell because of the jaggies.

Case in point:

Halo3_MP_Isolation_1st-02.jpg
It couldn't look much worse than the screenshot. I mean, how much better could they have made it?
Depends how they define "touch up." I once saw a video of a person photoshopping a ugly girl into a goddess. You never know with technology.

Who cares? It seems every little thing is being blown way out of proportion these days. I would suspect this happens more than we realize.

although predictable, this is also in lieu of them admitting that the footage we saw of Killzone 2 back at E3 '05 was CGI footage. While most of us knew that to our better knowledge, the question is, can we really trust what Guerilla shows us anymore?

This is how they define it:

So yeah, I doubt the screenshots are too far off. We've seen video anyways.

And I agree with others that this probably happens more than we know.

If you didn't think these screens were doctored, and you honestly thought the game would look this good, you are a complete fucking idiot. Seriously. Did you also think the PS3 would have two HDMI outputs and support 7 controllers? Jesus fucking christ some people never learn.

That is complete bullshit. I'll name one right off the bat: Halo 3.

There are certain people in the industry who will lie and doctor and bullshit everyone, and they're the same people all the time, and they'll continue to do it, and for some reason apparently idiots are still supporting them and swallowing their bullshit.

Then there are some people with standards of decency, that care what kind of company they are supporting with their dollar.

It is standard industry practice to 'clean up' prerelease screenshots. A couple people have mentioned Halo3 as not doing it, but that is the exception and not the rule.

There was a NBA game screenshot a few months ago that had a half a player in the background cos the photoshop artist didnt remove the entire player.

Im not saying its right, but Killzone is far from the first or last game to do this.

You know the women in Maxim dont really look anything like that irl right?

Halo 3 didn't need to do it because it has a pretty neat photo mode that ups the AA and puts some spit and polish on the shots when you take screens.

Weren't those screenshots taken from actual gameplay? I remember reading about people (from Guerilla or Sony) actually playing it in front of people.
lol @ people caring about killzone.
Seriously. The first game sucked ass. I don't see why anyone cares about this one.
Seriously. The first game sucked ass. I don't see why anyone cares about this one.
Cause the 2nd one was pretty good?

Sequels can be much better, and improved on.
Especially with this much attention being put on it.

You mean the PSP one? That one was better than the first game, which isn't a hard feat to accomplish, but it wasn't anything great.

And you're right, sequels can improve on a previously shitty series. But the fact remains that the series is mediocre at best, if you want to count the PSP one. So while remaining optimistic is understandable, making a big deal out of the game is not. I don't care how good it looks. The first one looked good too.

Killzone? Never heard of it.
Oh yeah, that shitty PS2 game that I regret spending $10 on. But my friend had a blast going through the incredibly moronic AI.

Killzone was not just a bad game, it was a TERRIBLE one. But Sony needs to have something to pin their hopes on..

Says you.

At least the single player was better than Halo's single player, and that's fact.

One's opinion regarding a qualitative factor does not equal fact, despite what you believe.

There weren't any times when you had to rely on arrows on the floor and Killzone actually had a story so you had a reason to keep going instead of just "kill the aliens" like in Halo.

I realize that is small, but there are the two screen shots.
Not to rag on the OP, but this is the shot that should be in the initial post.

The picture that's in the OP now seems to mislead people into thinking that that pic is the original...

Cornerstone - Bungie's been a good developer for ages. They had a pretty bitchin' RTS franchise back in the day.. Killzone's developers - Guerilla? - haven't done anything non-Killzone that I can think of.
Says you.
Is this one of those "irony" or "sarcasm" things?
Probably should have rephrased what I said, but I don't feel like it anymore. And Guerilla has made stuff pre-Killzone, it's just that none of it was any good :p

I'm pretty sure I called these shenanigans months ago. I wonder when they'll bunker down and start showing just actual images from this game, and not all the fake shit they've been mixing in for the past two years.
Did you also think the PS3 would have two HDMI outputs and support 7 controllers?
Well, it was initially advertised as having such features, so yeah, when they first announced those features, I expected it to have them. Why shouldn't I count on a company delivering on it's promises? Oh yeah, because it's Sony.
I don't see why anyone cares about this one.
I don't think anyone does. I think the hype is completely artificial.

Your approval is not necessary for other people to enjoy the game. Same goes for upcoming games. Find something productive to do, like play some games you like more than this one, instead of trying to convince everyone how much it will fail.

Not fucking rocket science here, guys. If you stop complaining you won't have to worry about how it turns out.

So, do you copy/paste that paragraph there into every thread where people are ragging on a game?

Seriously, most generic post ever.

I'm sure this goes on a lot, but I'm just surprised Guerrilla did this even after the backlash that they got from the original E3 05 trailer.
Did you also think the PS3 would have two HDMI outputs and support 7 controllers? Jesus fucking christ some people never learn.
Just nitpicking here, but the PS3 does support 7 controllers. Not that it matters, as I see your point.

Unfortunately I haven't made my approval necessary yet, sorry. I was merely giving my opinion (an opinion most people agree with) on a game in a thread about that game. Crazy I know.

Im going to be the asshole that says, Killzone 2= Next Lair.
Just because you have it does not mean you have to use it.
FACT!

I know that, but they were more known for the RTS and their first two ventures into the Shooting genre were sub-par, then they made an exclusive FPS that MS pinned all hopes on and people loved it. Sounds like Killzone 2 to me.
