I by no means want the "graphics vs" flame war. First let me Give you my gaming persona, I am traditionally a PC gamer in most sense of the word. My profession is in PC programming and I spend 7ish hours a day on pc, plus any side jobs. Ok I can barely play FPS on Consoles, but all other games I can play and immensely enjoy on consoles. I have owned Atari, NES, Genesis, Dreamcast, Xbox, PS1, PS2, GameCube(still have) and bought a wii at launch, to later sell the Wii out of dissatisfaction (I want gamepads not motion “gimmick”) and owned various video cards since 3dfx voodoo times. Favorite Consoles Games of the more current Gen are Prince of Persia Series, God of War Series, Tiger Woods, Fight Night, Soul Caliburs and Race Games (Gran Tourismo, PGR, Need For Speed (also on Computer). Favorite games of all time are FEAR and Tie Figher, and enjoyed most big First Person Shooters (but go through long burn out phases on FPS's), Splinter Cell, Need for Speed series and Flight Simulator on PC.

Ok my dilemma, get 8800GTS ($350ish) within month or so with most of the games at “very little cost”, or Get xbox360 like my friends have and enjoy buying the already used games I know I want (Lost Planet, Tiger Woods, Fight Night, Madden 07, PGR, Forza 2) and enjoy the swapping of games with friends, later get pro street, kane and lynch, Burnout Paradise, Devil May Cry, Dark Sector, Indy Jones, Ninja Gaiden 2, RE5, Splinter Cell, Soul Calibur for 360. Another Possibility wait on PS3 to get in the 250~300 range and have the wealth of games, which no friends have or seem to plan to have a PS3, which would mean I get 8800GTS now and wait the 2 years or so it will most likely take for PS3 to reach that price range.

I would like my fellow CAG’rs opinions as food for thought I am more or less leaning towards xbox360 or 8800GTS decision. I personally can analyze and argue myself into either decision. If I could see into the future and no what kind of developer support the x360 will have the support and quality it has now for the next 3 or so years, I would hate to buy x360 and the ps3 just leap frogs x360 like the ps2 did with xbox1 to most degrees and have very little 3rd party support like the gamecube.
 
Seems to me you like the Action/Adventure genre more on consoles and therefore I would recommend a PS3 with games Like Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, Folklore, and Heavenly Sword.

But you also like Sports games and with Xbox Live those are better on 360.. Only problem is that most of the 360's big budget titles are shooters which you hate on consoles (can't say I blame you), so it's a tough choice.

Personally I wouldn't buy the Video Card now as it still won't run Crysis at full settings. :)
 
I don't think either console will be lacking for third party support this generation.

It's a tough call - as a PC gamer, you'd prefer the keyboard/mouse action, which most PS3 FPS titles support (I imagine the 360 does as well, though I have no idea). OTOH, your friends want to game with you on the 360.

I'd use Unreal Tournament III, if that's a game you're interested in, as a litmus test. Wait a few months to see (1) how the PS3 mod community comes together, and what they offer for the title, and (2) how the 360 version stacks up against the PS3 version, both as a standalone title and in what kind of mods it will allow for, if any.

Surely you can wait 4 or so months (UTIII is a Q2 2008 360 title at the moment, though if the PS3 version launched a minute early, perhaps it will as well) to see how that one pans out?

I've never been a PC gamer, and have always preferred the universal compatibility of console titles. So I can't recommend going with the graphics card. There will (mostly) be one 360 and one PS3, while the card will be outdated in 12 months' time.

I'd vote "go with the console," but which one you choose is up to you.
 
Sounds like the graphics card would be the way to go for you, since you seem more into PC gaming overall.

For my tastes (which are different that yours, and thus probably not much help) I'd rank them in terms of my preference:

1. Xbox 360. Just has the most games that I like thus far. X-box Live is great.

2. PS3. Still a bit too pricey for me, but game library is starting to shape up a bit.

3. PC. Never been much into it myself. Love the mousepart of the controls, but hate the keyboard. Hate gaming on a PC at home after sitting at one all day at work, spending time goofing online etc. Prefer to game on my big HDTV on my comfy couch, than at my desk (would never put a computer in the living room hooked up to the TV) etc.
 
Honestly I say the videocard but not the GTS, I say the 8800GT, its $100 cheaper and performs much better in all areas than the GTS. (there is really no reason to get the GTS over the GT)

Mainly I say teh videcard because well you like PC games more, and then we could play together too.
 
Grr this is hard. As a pennypincher I'd say pickup a 8800GT when it drops to the price you're willing to pay for the GTS. I can't recommend getting a 360 or a PS3 for now. I'm hesitant on getting a 360 myself because of the problems I keep hearing about it(Having a Coffin ready for WHEN it breaks not if?!), and PS3 is a wait unless you have a serious windfall.

So 8800GT.

That is actually a pretty significant piece of info that would make me go and suggest you gravitate towards a console. I also am a software developer and I used to be very into PC gaming. After 8+ hours at work on a computer and then several more hours playing on my PC every night, I started to get some pretty severe repetitive stress pains (wrists, elbows, fingers, back). I toned my PC gaming and started playing a ton of 360 games and immediately things got a lot better. The change of pace from sitting in front of a computer to sitting in your living room is a welcome one when you are already doing it all day.
