King's/Space/Police Quest (and LSL) Compilations (PC) $17 at Amazon
Congress keeps 'temporarily' extending the copyright timeframe, because big business wants to prevent profitable works from becoming public domain (Mickey Mouse, the Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind are high on the list. All of them SHOULD have moved to the public domain decades ago.) At this point, realistically, nothing EVER becomes public domain because we're in an infinite cycle of 'temporary' extentions.

Copyright needs to be reworked from the ground-up. The rule should be based on 'use it or lose it' - as long as a product is on the market, copyright should automatically be extended forever. If there's ever a 10 year period (or some such reasonable short time frame) in which a work is not publicly marketed, though, the copyright should automatically expire.

This is more of a topic for the Vs. forum, though :)
I don't know about forever... I liked the old system, 26 years, extendable by another 26 years if you reapply. The world will not end when Steamboat Willy becomes public domain. The works of Shakespeare, Mozart, and Twain are all public domain.

Copyright exists to encourage you to write books, songs, movies, by giving you a temporary monopoly on it. It serves the public good, not many people would create these things if they couldn't profit, or if anyone else could. But it serves no purpose to extend copyright long after you're dead, your decendants shouldn't be able to live off of your works, at least not for long. It doesn't serve the public good to no longer contribute to the public domain.

Anyway... Has anyone had theirs shipped yet, or has heard of anyone getting theirs shipped?

Oh come on, don't act like Sierra is knocking down culture and creativity because they want to keep financial control over a product that there's still a market for after over a decade.

Sorry to give you the wrong impression. I wasn't referring to sierra in particular; it's just that this book is relevant to several of the comments made, an amazing read, and a free download.

I don't know what the ideal copyright term for software should be. I can tell you it's probably over one year but under a hundred, but not give you an exact figure.

At least Sierra seems to be making the games available, and for a price that can encourage a new generation to pick up the classics (or at least for people to pick them up as a gift for the new generation).

We can at least applaude them for that, most companies are literally just sitting on goldmines.

I wish LucasArts would re-release some of their classics. They sadly discontinued the adventure collection ($30) with Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max, and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis last year before I had a chance to buy it. I already own two of those games (talkie version), but it would be nice to own the other.

How about a verison of "Full Throttle" that will work correctly under Windows XP? :D
That just means they don't know what the real date is.
Or if it's even going to be released.

Sierra strikes me as real funny. I'd love to play games like PQ (only played the first when it came out), SQ (I have the collection, but haven't even thought about trying it since I upgraded to XP) and Wasteland. But can we download these? No. Can we buy them? No.

So I say a big fuck to Sierra (and EA, which bought Origin and denies us Privateer) until I see some results.

BTW, anyone know where I can get an updated version of VGA Planets?
Holy fuck. Giving this thread a 4 month bump because these are really coming out next week?!?!
WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IT'S A TRAP!

These games have not been redone in any way by Sierra...evidence is here at the bottom of the game page for KQ:

They just use Dosbox! Whether its a shortcut/batch file, or they give you instructions on how to set up Dosbox, nothing has been remastered or retooled for XP. The money grubbing weasels!

What a rip off... I was thinking about updating my collection and getting out of all my old boxes etc for the updated Xp version... then someone has to come and spoil it all for me..

whoa, i just got out of the shower when someone knocked on my apartment door. i quickly dressed and ran to the door to find two amazon boxes sitting out there. opened them up and.....

Space Quest Collection
Kings Quest Collection
Police Quest Collection
Leisure Suit Larry Collection

Yea, this is kind of lame, I'm a little disappointed.

i just opened the games...my gosh. what a rip off. each box comes with a sheet that says, "you should print out the manuals"....of course, they couldn't print out the manuals for us first. it's literally dosbox...cuz the sheet also says "you may encounter an error message..." and tells you what to do. they couldn't even program it to work right...

shoot, i forgot i had these on preorder or i would have cancelled

F**king sierra. Vietgurl, return your games telling amazon that the box flat out lies and it doesn't work on your computer, even if you follow instructions, and then go pirate all the games.

They don't deserve people's money if they can't even retool a frickin game to work in windows XP.
