Caffeinefree

CAGiversary!
EDIT - If you see any deals in your local Kmart post it in this thread. Spread the love. This post is no longer being curated so check the last post for YMMV local deals.

20% OFF SALE ON NOW UNTIL THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE. (*Gwarr... Brains...*)

NOTICE

I am no longer affiliated with Kmart, so this isn't getting any future updates. Stay tuned to the latest post in the comment section. THANKS!

I looked into the plan for this fire-sale, and apparently they'll be rolling out clearance deals for the whole section. So 20% off, then 50%, or whatever comes to pass. Looks like different regions are getting different sales sooner than others, as well as higher volume stores getting different sales than lower ones. IF YOU HAVE INSIDE INFO, POST IN THIS THREAD SO CAGS IN YOUR AREA CAN GET A HEADS UP.

TIPS & TRICKS

  • All deals are YMMV.
  • Kmart bases it's clearance on how long an item has been in stock. It takes a few weeks, but even the most expensive items go on clearance.
  • ALWAYS ASK SOMEONE TO SCAN AN ITEM FOR YOU. Most older games are on clearance, but have not been labeled as such.
  • Lookout for "penny items", items that have been on shelf for so long they've been clearanced down to 0.01. They won't sell for that, but it's a great way to get GTA IV for $2.00, for example.
  • TAKE A PICTURE AND PRICE MATCH.  For Walmart and other retailers, this is all they need to price match. Make sure the label is clearly visible and don't forget to post it here and share the love.

Background Info
So I am an employee of Kmart and happened to see this memo pass through my local store. I can't repeat it verbatim, and I couldn't get a picture of the message due to being constantly on camera.

Basically the memo stated the "exit strategy" for the games section in retail stores. Stating that this was in essence brought on by having overstocked shelves (bwa hahaha) and not enough customers. However Kmart.com, Sears.com, and Shopyourwayrewards.com, would continue to sell games and consoles to meet peoples needs. So they're switching focus from retail to online.

The message continued to explain to sell down merch and fill the empty space with other merch. Eventually to clearance out the whole section if it didn't sell down.

So firstly, wait. Just wait and deals will come.

As a customer I have to say that Kmart has had nothing but crappy deals for the past few years. (On games) Focusing on SYWR points and mediocre sales to bring in customers rather than staying competitive with Amazon, Walmart, and pretty much any retailer that will actually give a deep discount. Therefore they have shot themselves in the foot and driven away most business. As a result of that they face what I call "the burger problem".

When Kmart doesn't get games in to sell, they can't sell them. But instead of getting more stock I guess they just say "X person doesn't want Y game". This is just like a survey of a small town saying no one in the town likes burgers, because no one eats burgers. Only to find out there is nowhere to eat burgers in the first place.

Why doesn't Kmart get games to sell? I don't know if Kmart as a whole does this, or just my store, but we don't get games on a truck. We get them in sporadically via UPS, and never before release date. We get limited quantities and then get restocks oddly. Over the holidays I got dozens of calls for titles we wouldn't get in for weeks. During Christmas we only got a handful of Xbox Ones and no PS4s, and since then only one Wii U and one 3DS XL, which may have been returns. In short they could be making money, but there is just some really bad policies in place that leave plenty of customers walking out the door.

Then on top of that we barely make any money in markup. We buy games basically at cost, given only a few dollars. I've seen games we bought for 58.50 selling for $60. Same for all peripherals, a 20 charger may have costed 12 for us. I was really shocked about this when I first started looking into it. Whereas other sections of the store have a markup that's understandable.

So now after all this poor management, they're getting rid of what has always been the best part of the electronics section - games. I remember there being something said about "better serving our customer's needs", the problem in the first place was that they didn't serve our needs. For the most part they were poorly stocked, AND THIS HAS KILLED THEM THE MOST.

Damn would like to see what the evil within xbone is going for in store but none are in my area.

On the site I see Unity Xbone for 24.99. Thats the cheapest I've seen it physical

Just a couple of things I saw on the past few visits over the months

Recently, they still had a vita 8GB card on the floor. The price was not available in the system but the manager priced it at $4. Too bad they sold the Wonderful 101s though.

A couple of months ago, they had some PS3 Gold (I think) wireless headsets that were clearanced from $100 to $10.

I  checked out the only remaining K-Mart in my area (that I know of) and the game section was mostly empty.

I pickrf up the only copies of the following games:

PS3 - Splinter Cell: Blacklist  -$12
Wii U - Pikmin 3 - $59.99 (MSRP, but crazy-hard to find new!)

I also considered grabbing Nano Assault for 3DS for $9.99, but saw that it was the same price on Amazon and decided to pass.

I love how this thread doubles as a eulogy for Kmart.

Kmart: "But I'm not dead yet!"

CAG: "Yes you are, you just don't know it yet."

I can't wait to see what kind of treasure gets unearthed when they do their store closings and uncover old/lost items.

Never went to Kmart as a kid (we didn't have them) but oddly reminds me of my days going to Ames and Woolworths...

kmart was dead before SHC gamer even joined the site. I've got to burn through my credit before they shut the doors for good. I usually buy about $200 worth of stuff each time I go, just to use up my credit.

Gaming memories from Kmart:

Picked up the original Metroid on Blue Light Special. Also remember getting Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers the same way (among other games).

Spent a ton of time at the Genesis kiosks at Kmart. Before I had a Genny, they had a full copy of Sonic 2 there. Pretty sure I nearly beat the game at that kiosk, because nobody was ever in the store.

Holy pot holes. I stopped by the local K-mart and I could barely navigate the entrance. Calling them pot holes is probably insulting, these were impact craters.

They are going to have to offer some insane deal on the 5 remaining Wii U games to get me to put my poor car through that again.

Just checked Sears, no games out on the floor. Looks like they threw in the towel at my store although they had some decent games last week. Only pre paid gaming cards left.

Just checked my local Kmart. They had a copy of Metal Gear Solid V Ground Zeroes for PS3, and I seem to remember that it was clearanced or something.

It rang up at $19.99. Hightailed it outta there.

yea it was 5 bucks not too long ago, price matched it at BB

Our K-Mart has been a desolate ghost town for a few years now.

With that said, I'm not even sure how SHC as a whole continues to stay afloat. Online sales and older folks loyal to the Sears/K-Mart brands, I'm presuming?

My local K-mart had moved out all of their stuff.. only one section of the glass case was full.  They did have a PS4 camera for $39 but that was about it.

i gotta see what mine has, i haven't been there in a few years, but last i saw they had copies of GBA games including stuff like Sigma Star Saga and Megaman Battle Network 6. i am probably going to be greeted by tumbleweeds and nogames though.

Within the last week they took all the cases out at my store. All that's left is Michael Jackson, a handful of PS3 shovelware, a few recent titles for PS4 and Xbone and some old ds games. All full price. Only systems left is 3 red 2DS's. Hope they clearance stuff out soon..

So after my wife spoke to her manager, apparently he is going to let me have all 3 of the game display cases from the gaming section. Planning on going to pick them up. They're glass and 1 is blue & red with the Nintendo logo, 1 is WiiU, and the other is just plain. Really only have plans for the Nintendo one, going to put it in the RecRoom with my Retro games and consoles. Anyone have any ideas for the others? Thought about eBay, but they'd be a bitch to ship.
Are you talking about these?

If they just gave these to you, wow. I'd love to get just one of those. Not anywhere near the Pittsburg area, though.

My local store's game section was obviously long gone.  Looked like a graveyard, only about 5 games on the shelves and nothing recent.  Full price, to boot.

Where did you get so much credit from?

"Our shitty games aren't selling? BETTER RAISE THE PRICE!!1"
That's probably not it. The general manager at my store is a son of a bitch. Refuses to sell any game no matter what it is for under $10. When MGS and other games were clearanced for $5, they all disappeared. I assumed they got bought. The very day after the clearance ended, I saw Ground Zeroes for the Xbone and PS3 on the shelves. Rang up at $20. I know he hid them until the sale ended. He missed a Beyond Two Souls that I picked up. It didn't ring up for $10, which is probably why he missed it. And since it required an override, the manager misread it and sold it to me for $9 instead of $10. Small consolation.

Yes those. Just got them today. There's not a WiiU one. It was one nintendo, one playstation, and blank one. They actually gave me the signs that got above them also. The only that would show which console they are. There's some old signs there. Some regular PSOne signs like Spyro and Crash. Also Original Xbox. One says Gameday 99 lol.

Currently just have them laying in the garage but I'll try to take a few pictures.

Only notable thing at my Kmart were 2 copies of Lumines Electronic Symphony for $6 each, also picked it up with a USB 3DS charger for $5

Here's the Playstation door

And the old signs. Apparently they never got rid of them and only put the new one in front.

I highly doubt my stores would have anything but shovelware.  But i got one store near work i'm gonna try after work tomorrow. Hopefully to find a diamond in the rough or something decent.

Just went to my local Kmart and found that the games section was reduced to half a small shelf. It wasn't very impressive as it was just Disney Infinity sets and a bunch of 3rd party accessories.

Man those things would be great if you have kids that like to touch your games with their chocolate-covered fingers! Just lock them in the case....

Went to my kmart yesterday and picked up son skylanders. Swap force and lightcore characters were 8 dollars. The triple pack with characters in a battle item in them or 15. Single regular characters were between 6 & 7.

They also had Disney infinity items clearance to out as well. They had characters markdown but I didn't care to see what they were priced since I don't play infinity. They did have the Disney infinity store and play set for $8 clearance and it seems to be the perfect storage for amiibo!

IDK if you follow the 5 below thread or have one near you, but they have gotten in skylanders giants. I posted some pics in the thread of what I saw.

Reporting in from the Morehead City, NC K-Mart! They have a black 3DS XL for $120, with a blue one behind it, but I couldn't see the price on that one. Also a wireless Xbox One controller play and charge kit for $45. I would've bought both if I needed them....

Otherwise everything seems pretty lame. Some good games left but none that have been clearanced yet.

I worked for Kmart as the electronic manager for 7 years and we knew this day was coming for so long... Im very glad Im not working in the department anymore. Sad days.

There might 20% off clearance games today as i got splinter cell blacklist for $9.60 instead of the stickered $12.

Yes, all clearance games are 20% off. Nothing else was posted to be on sale, but I'll check the consoles in a second.

Edit: Consoles are all near msrp. All games and accessories are now clearance, but only like a dollar off msrp, and then an additional 20% off. Going to get Mario and Luigi Dream Team for $19, will update with anything good.

Just visited my local Kmart in Cranston, RI with my friend. We scanned Pokemon Y, it rang up $39.99. We left and visited the GameStop next store to try out the new 3DS XL. When we opened the door and left GameStop we were confronted by two pieces of garbage who claimed they were part of Kmart security. They told us we had to come with them, they had footage of us shop lifting. I laughed in their face and told my friend to come with me. They followed us all the way to our car until I went ape shit and told them we didn't steal anything and they couldn't make us come back into the store, one of them was pretending to be checking his phone and they went back in the store. I'll never shop here ever again, except for when they go out of business and I can come back and laugh in these jokers faces.

The only time I've ever seen security at Kmart is when they were going out of business just to mark your receipt. It sounds like they weren't even good enough to stop you before leaving the store on these allegations.
