Know what I hate? Accidentally moving a folder in Windows! Any way to prevent this?

It seems way too easy to do this when you're just clicking around in Explorer. Like, if you click on a folder but you hold the mouse for a nanosecond too long, you can accidentally drag the whole folder somewhere else. And Windows won't even ask for any confirmation!

What's worse is that we have a shared network drive at work, so ANYONE can accidentally do this with important company files. And I'm pretty much the most computer literate guy in my office - so if it occasionally happens to me, I KNOW it's happening to other people. Is there at least some sort of setting you can change where it will prompt you to confirm a folder move, or something like that?

I've done this on occasion. Usually I catch it right away and simply press "undo" to reverse the change. But I am not sure of if you can make Windows confirm it or not.

No confirmation... and lock down security with read only access.

seriously, more hands that touch it will screw it up!

TweakUI for Windows XP lets you increase the number of pixels you have to drag something before it decides you want to move it. Default is 4 pixels, so you can up that to 10 or 20. Microsoft apparently doesn't offer Tweak UI for Vista, so I don't know where you can find that functionality.

At any rate, xycury is right. Security is the best solution.

There is a program called TweakVI for vista that does most of the same things. Not sure if it's made by the same people though.

Another thought might be to check in the control panel on your mouse settings, you may be able to increase the amount of time required to drag an object.

ahhh thanks for the tips guys. Not really sure what the ideal solution would be since people are gonna need to be able to create folders/files on the network drive. It seems pretty boneheaded to not even ask for a confirmation though!!!! It is very easy do by accident and not even realize it... and even if I am extra careful, there's still everybody else in the office to worry about. Maybe that TweakUI thing is worth looking into.

What he said, lock the folders down with security permissions.

Intercept Drag and Drop appears to do what you ask. Looks to be shareware, so you'd have to pay for a license. Originally I found this discussion, and the final reply in it pointed me toward the program above.

Googled "windows confirm before moving folder" brought up this conversation as well, where it looks like you MIGHT be able to fix it with some registry hacking.

I read in one of the discussions that the only answer is a shell extension, which is what I expected. So I'm guessing that program is just that. Meaning if you REALLY wanted, a programmer with some spare time might be able to work up a solution for you. But eh.

Hope this is helpful.
