Komodo dragon kills boy, 8, in Indonesia
First recorded deadly attack on human by giant lizards in 33 years

JAKARTA, Indonesia - A Komodo dragon attacked and killed an 8-year-old boy in eastern Indonesia, the first recorded deadly attack on a human by one of the giant lizards in 33 years, a national park spokesman said Monday.

The boy was mauled when he went to go to the bathroom behind a bush Saturday on Komodo island, Heru Rudiharto said.

“The Komodo bit him on his waist and tossed him viciously from side to side,” Rudiharto said.

“A fishermen, who just happened to be the boy’s uncle, threw rocks at the lizard until it let the boy go and fled,” he said. “The boy died from massive bleeding half an hour later.”

Komodos, the world’s largest lizards, are only found in the wild in a small archipelago in eastern Indonesia. Fewer than 4,000 survive.

Rudiharto said the lizards had been living side-by-side with the 1,200 people on Komodo with no fatal incident for 33 years.

“Perhaps the lizards’ natural prey has decreased because we are entering the dry season and there has been too much deer hunting,” he said.

Komodos can grow to a length of 10 feet and weigh up to 365 pounds.

Thousands of tourists visit Komodo each year to see the lizards in their natural habitat. They are normally shown around the arid and rocky island by guides who carry large, forked sticks to ward of the lizards.

That's messed up. I never knew Komodos even existed!

Well, we know who wins in Komodo vs 8 year old boy.
Their main food source is deer? What the hell?
The thing is, assuming I remember right, is that their teeth are such that they get meat stuck in them, which rots, so pretty much any bite they give automatically gives whatever the prey is massive blood poisoning. Even a scratch from their teeth is usually fatal for whatever it is.
Yep. I don't get to Jarkarta much.
Haven't you ever been to a natural history museum? Or maybe, I don't know, a zoo?

Komodo Dragons have not traditionally been considered venomous, but it has recently been suggested that they may produce a weak venom.[17] In addition to the possible venom, dragons also possess virulent bacteria in their saliva, of which more than 15 strains have been isolated. These bacteria cause septicemia in their victim; if an initial bite does not kill the prey animal and it escapes, it will commonly succumb within a week to the resulting infection.

Also, this is pretty awesome ...

Unusually, the Komodo Dragon has been observed intentionally startling a pregnant deer in the hopes of a miscarriage whose remains they can eat
:puke:

I vote this "Most educational thread of 2007"!
The kid probably peed on it or something.
LOL, reminds me of the idiots in Florida that see a gator and wave stuff at them and then get attacked.

Speaking of eight-year-olds and Komodo Dragons, you know what would be a great learning tool for young children who want to know more about Komodo Dragons? My children's book on Komodo Dragons, available at fine online booksellers everywhere. $15 shipped to CAGs who contact me directly...

Shameless self-promotion for starving artists aside, I wondered when I'd be reading a story like this. Komodo food sources are shrinking, for one, but more dangerous is that people take dragon tours and even feed them, which is decreasing their natural fear of people. The more comfortable they get around people, the closer they come.

Interesting books you've written there.

Haha, he said "unfortunately".

I learned everything I ever wanted to know about Komodo Dragons by watching Steve Irwin get chased up a tree by one. He was scared as shit of getting bitten because of the whole super-toxic bacteria in the mouth thing.

They're huge, I used to see them at the San Diego zoo.

Steve Irwin proved how insane he was during the filming of that episode. He would crawl on his stomach and lay right outside the lizard's burrow. His face was like 2 feet away from them.

They can consume up to 80% of their body weight in one meal, so that kid was probably just about the right size.

Yep - their saliva and "mouth juices" is HIGHLY toxic. It has numerous strains of potentially deadly bacteria and the toxins they produce in it. Gila monsters also have evolved the same offensive/defensive capability. Basically highly toxic and potentially fatal venom, but without the evolved delivery system of fangs/stingers and venom producing glands via specific bacteria strains.

So what they do is bite the prey, and even if the prey gets away and can outrun them (and these fuckers can run pretty damn fast when they aren't feeling lethargic and get a blood lust going), the prey just wanders off to die and they scavenge it.

Their stomach acid allow them to neutralize their own toxic saliva, however if they bite each other and puncture the skin, it is normally fatal to them.

Lessons I Have Learned In Life:

If I have to pee while visiting Komodo Island, I should probably just hold it until I get back to the boat.
