Kotaku: PSP redesign will be announced at E3

How could they really make it that much smaller? The thing's all screen and UMD drive. If it's any thinner, it's going to be more uncomfortable to hold than it is now.

dallow: the LED thing is probably refering to how the LCD is lit, using LEDs rather than the normal back lighting were used to. THat tech is in newer laptops now and supposedly allows a more efficient light.

I have to wonder ift here's going to be a fundamental redesign on the innerworking as a big block to homebrew/custom firmwares. A redesign is pretty inevitable, but the system is solid as is. As was said above, more money on new games less on new hardware. Thanks. :)

the entire system was solid excpet for the analog stick, d-pad, and the hand cramps. as long as those problems are fixed, PSP is at the top of my list as fave consoles... also faster UMD loading is going to be huge if done right.
 
If they fixed the D-Pad and the Analog "nub" (what a stupid fucking contrapation), and if EB / GS did a PSP trade-in deal, I'd trade up, definitely.

PSP has games I want to play but every time I turn it on, the controls bother the fuck out of me in about 20 minutes and I stop playing.

Faster load times is a plus too.

This just reads like someone's wish list though, I'll believe it when I see it, but I desperately want to believe.
 
Seeing as I just got mine a couple weeks ago...no I will not be buying one :p

However, what happens if I go to use my Gamestop warranty? I'm sure I'd just get the old one.

This hits basically everything I want in my PSP. If I can get one for a trade in with my current PSP for $150-170, I'll be there for launch. I really hope this is true.
 
There's one piece in this that could actually make a HUGE difference. It's not the internal memory, the slimmer design, or the refined buttons and d-pad.

The key issue here is the PSP's new LED that will boost the battery life four fold. If this story is true, Sony can now start making use of the PSP's processor capable of running at 333mhz instead of 222mhz.

The PSP's poor battery life was the main reason for the processor cap, but it won't be a hindrance any longer.

Games can now load faster, gameplay can be much quicker and more complex. This is the one improvement that I think can actually make a huge difference for the PSP. Everything else is minor compared to this.

This was unlocked around FW 3.0, but from what I know, only PS1 emulated games run at 333mhz. PSP games still run at 222mhz.

LED and OLED are completely different technologies. Not the same thing.

I call BS on this.

They have inside sources, but they probably wanted to get an official response from Sony, and Sony said they won't comment on rumors.
 
Now the psp can compete w/ the ipod due to the flash memory, and hopefully you'll be able to download shows and movies, ps1 games. psp might be a nice piece of equipment in its redesigned form. I'd like it, if you can change the faceplate to different colors. I think I'm going to get the new psp... might give the old psp to a friend...

even if not, it's worth it IMHO. Homebrewers can love the old model while people who actually play UMDs can love the new model.

I don't think the the UMD is a bad thing.. unless of course you're trying to use it for media... that wasn't so good. But they're a good storage medium for games... but there is one thing that would be much better. I'd love to see Sony use a read only Pro Duo stick, as its cartridges. a 2gb stick should be more than enough for any portable game. Heck Sony could do that now... just release the games on memory sticks.... read only of course.

I don't know, this seems too good to be true.

I'm a sucker for handheld revisions though, I've bought practically every different GameBoy and the DS Lite. So I'll probably hawk my current PSP and use the money towards this new one if it's for real.

that's my plan. I do hope it's true and mostly that it will be out only a month or so after announcement.

I wonder what kind of extra features will be included, aside from the refinements. I imagine they'll all come with "uncrackable" FW 4.0 (sony's words.) If video output is happening, it'll be on this one as well. I could see bluetooth in there somewhere too.

there isn't a huge difference in 333mhz mode with current games, though that's probably just because they aren't meant to run in that mode.

Ditto. Despite all of it's flaws, the PSP is an awesome system with homebrewn, but not even worth the effort without.

I'll totally disagree with you on that part. It's mainly up to the user. I had homebrew fro roughly a year and bore of it... now I constantly update firmware, and I'm happy as a clam.

I agree. The PSP is a wonderful system that has tons of multimedia features with an increasingly awesome library of software.
 
I don't care about the firmware or homebrew, so if they keep the price the same as the current version, then I'm definitely buying this day one. LED backlight! Slimmer, faster! 8G Internal Flash! Better d-pad! I can't wait...!
