Lawyers are scums

Max Spider X

CAGiversary!
Do you concur?

Pardon my grammar as I typed this out in a hurry and pasted it over from another board.

Let me tell you the story of my family in dealing with scum lawyers.

2003: lawyer 1. Took care of our case(I won't go into details here). Did sloppy job and didn't even submit the most basic documents. Mom was angry and went up to his office (they happened to work in the same building), and broke her ankle there. He was scared that mom would harrass him for money, he called us home and actually calling my mom a "piece of ****."

2004: changed to lawyer 2. Charged $100/hr for whatever slightest effort she made on our case, i.e. flip open the folder, make a photocopy($1/copy, btw, on top of the $100/hr rate). Did not use any brain, and submitted whatever documents we gave her, ultimately resulting in the denial of our case.

End of 2004, changed to lawyer 3 to appeal for the denial. He took $1500 as retainer, and it would be refunded back "in the event the appeal fails and the appeal board confirms with the initial decision of denial." as stated on the contract. In the following month, he closed the office near my home.

In 2006, we still haven't received the decision. I got a job in the same building as lawyer 3's main office. In March, we received the decision from the board of appeals that the appeal was dismissed (which basically implies that they agree with the initial denial of our case). Tried contacting lawyer to get back our $1500, and found his office was closed. Found his LA address on the web and called that number. He was caught off guard that we were able to find him.

Initially, he claimed that the retainer will be mailed to us. But after a month of phone calls, he finally cursed and hung up on my mom. I subsequently sent him a fax. He wrote me back a letter with $3 certified mail accussing my mom of harrassing him. He claimed that the contract she signed was with his corporation. As the corporation is no more in NY, he is no longer liable for the refund as an individual. Also tried to play the words by stating that the notice from board of appeals didn't contain the words "Confirm with the initial decision of denial." Hence we get zero.

Lawyer 4 of a separate case. Dad sprinkled his ankle at a former workplace and hired lawyer 4 to the injury case. On the day of court, lawyer 4 went empty-handed without my dad's medical records, despite the number of times we sent/faxed it to him. Case dismissed by default. GG!

Not all lawyers are like this. My boyfriend is a lawyer and works very hard. Javeryh is also a lawyer, so maybe he can defend them more than me. But not all lawyers are like this. Just like with every other profession, there are a lot of assholes.

man, i know there are a lot of crappy lawyers out there.
BUT 4 consecutive suckie lawyers?!
you need to go buy some lucky bamboos or something to help boost your luck.
hopefully, it will all work out in the end.
Good Luck.

On an unrelated note, who is the girl in your avatar? Is that Maki Goto in the picture? I think it is but I can't be sure.

Yes we really need to do something in this country to clean up our lawyer problem, but then again we also need to clean up our sleezy mechainc, plummer, contractor etc. problems.

In short just don't always hire from the bottom of the barrel and you might actually win occasionally, as they say you get what you pay for and $100 an hour for a lawyer isn't much.

Yup! Goto Maki.

This is why they say the only thing in hell is lawyers. The other saying is that on the bottom of the ocean you'll find sharks and lawyers.

I'm sorry to hear this happen to you. My dad had to deal with a lawyer for about 5 years and he was great. He took care of everything, invited over to his house on numerous occasions to come to parties. Just a great guy in general. And my dads case was only worth $5,000 to him at the absolute most. The lawyer is a millionaire and would gain nothing from my dads simple case. I guess in my parents line of work you just make great friends.

Indeed. $100/hr is the bare minimum, pretty much.

Just as with anything worth doing, research is key. Straight from about.com:

1. Determine the legal issue and what type of law may be applicable. Such as business incorporation, employee labor law, real estate, buying a company or wills and estates.

2. Assess the type of lawyers dealing with your legal issue.

3. Compile a list of lawyers in the determined subject area by:

4. Talking to friends and business peers for a referral in the legal area you need.

5. Contact other professionals you know such as your banker or accountant.

6. Use a lawyer referral network service located on the Internet, Yellow Pages, or Bar Association.

7. Set up a phone interview with a narrowed down candidate list and ask the following questions:

8. How long have you been in practice?

9. How much experience do you have in the area of ...(subject area you need)? How many wins have you had in this area?

10. Is this a standard issue with a basic fee or more complex with an hourly fee?

11. Is there a fee for the initial consultation?

12. Review the answers from each phone interview. Make an appointment with a lawyer that can deal with your legal issue in a timely matter, has an interest in your business and makes you feel comfortable.

13. Be prepared for your initial interview with complete documentation for your case.

14. If all goes well and you feel the lawyer can best represent your interests and case then hire them.

Also, for my own 2 bits, don't ever hire a lawyer that will charge you for the initial consultation. He's only out to suck you for as much money as he can before you decide to change lawyers.
He's a corporate lawyer.
Yup. I don't deal with this type of stuff. If I ever see the inside of a courtroom or talk to a judge then I will probably be the defendant.

Well i'm offended. My parents are both lawyers, and would do a HELL of a lot better then the idiots you had. Maybe if you werent such a C.A. and actually PAID for a decent lawyer, you'd get what you wanted.

My brother is a lawyer and often does discounted work for people who can't afford it and doesn't nickel and dime his clients. You just hired some shady guys.
I'm not going to prejudge, but in short, Jaykrue's list is a good one to follow. Don't take the first lawyer to catch up with the ambulance. (hardy har har)

Once I graduate, I hope to go to law school and get into corporate law, with an emphasis in contracts. Once I get going, I'll put money away to start my own business, and go from there. I love law, and yes, there are trashy lawyers... but there is trash in every profession.

Your fault for not doing research or try looking up their background. No references? Man you got screwed 4 times in a row. Sometimes people don't learn after making the first mistake.

Get an MBA if you can - I didn't and I feel like I'm at a disadvantage when it comes to reading financial statements and just talking about business concepts in general. It is OK work - the hours SUCK but the pay is good.

I'm probably going to Law School after I get my BS, but then again I may go in to porn; it's a toss up really.

You learn a lot on CAG. 1)I didn't know you could pluralize scum! I guess the next time I drive at night I should watch out for all the deers in the South. 2) That working in porn and law are pretty much the same thing!

Heh, funny how the offspring of the professionals I am dissing here fits the title of this topic perfectly.

First of all, my parents aren't lawyers and they don't make the amount of dough yours do, but that doesn't make my family C.A. Second, they aren't native english speakers. So their options are limited when it comes to hiring lawyers (half of the lawyers listed above were Americans with assistants who they could communicate with). Third, we didn't exactly get any good deals with low professional fees. The amount we paid was about right for the type of the case. Assuming we did hire discount rate attorneys, that still doesn't give them the right to pull unethical shits like these.

Gotta love the youth of today who think they are so impartial towards everything in the world and are always ready to jump at whoever that makes a true statement from his gut. I guess the type of responses received would have varied greatly had I simply put the word "Most" before the title. Now I only got one word for them: hypocrites.

Oh, and I thank everyone else for the comments.

I've considered PMing you in the past a few times with some questions. Maybe I'll follow through on that threat sometime soon ;)

Quit hiring Lionel Hutz, and stay away from Miguel Sanchez also. Seriously.

no, "most" wouldn't have been appropriate either.

try "the lawyers I dealt with were scum" FTW and people would've been sympathetic.

Sorry to hijack the thread but do you have any advice for someone going into international law or criminal law. I am thinking more the lines of international but criminal would be fine as well.

Why doesn't it surprise me that the guy who obviously has a thing for bloodsuckers also wants to get into law?

So I am 'scum' because you are generalizing my parents because you are a poor piece of shit and cannot afford a decent lawyer? You probably got some retard straight out of graduate school looking to make easy money. Not my fault, not my problem, and it doesnt reflect my parents whatsoever.

Maybe rather then sitting back and watching, you couldve helped. You obviously have a high schooler's grasp of the english language....

Gotta love idiot immigrants today who piss and moan because they dont know how to fucking speak the english language. Maybe your parents should go back to school so that if they have to deal with professionals such as a lawyer, they can speak to them in a coherent fashion.
Regardless, how is calling my parents, and all lawyers for that matter 'scums'?
Have you met all of the lawyers in the world? No. So tell me, just because you were too fucking poor to afford a DECENT lawyer, how it gives you the right to call ALL lawyers scum?

I hope you do realize that you just made yourself look like an ignorant racist with that last comment.

Yeah, so I called lawyers scum, in the same fashion how people make everyday witty comments like "lawyers=liars", "CPA=Cheapest People Alive". But if you really wanted me to specifically call out your parents and call them scum, I would.

I think the real problem at hand is the failure to research. You chose the wrong lawyers for the wrong job, obviously they didn't care about their customer. You need to find a lawyer that cares. Dealing with lawyers myself, there are some out there that do care.
I am in my first year of law school and if anyone has any questions about that, I would be more than willing to help. Especially about the entrance process and the workload of law school.
If anyone want a nice book detailing the first year of law school (you poor, poor bastard), check out the book One L.

I thought the better book was Law School Confidential. The only thing bad about it is that it is a little elitist, it seems to cater more towards people applying to the top 20 law schools, and not the average law student. I felt One L was a little harsh. Law school is extremely tough your first year. I got two exams to go this week before I am done with being called a 1L....hopefully.

Well yes, i would consider them first rate attorneys, however neither of them practices anymore. My mother hasnt worked since i was in kindergarten.
My parents were both corporate lawyers like Javery, so they didnt deal with cheap shits like your parents.

You generalized that ALL of them are. I dont care what other people did. Do you think i give a fuck if some loser shit on a videogame site criticizes my parents and how they raised me? No.

Jpod

my god if you dont give a shit about a loser on a game site complaining then why the f**k do you take him calling all lawyers scumbag so personally? Aren't you being a hypocrite? And the irony in all this iis that you're so damn rich yet you're a member of a site for cheap ass gamers? You should be able to afford multiple copies of a single game.
