There's an anime thread... and there's a comic book thread... eh, why not? :)

So how many CAGs play or played MTG? How did you guys get into this in the first place?

There was a recent resurgence of MTG amongst my friends, mostly during college. We're all recently graduated from college, and we're playing this all the time now. My bf got me into it during college, when him and his best friend got into MTG again. I remember the nerds in middle school that would play through brunch and lunch, and I totally didn't get the appeal. As it turns out, 90% of my current guy friends were one of those middle school dorks. (They all told me they stopped in high school cuz they started caring about what girls thought of them.) Now they've gotten me to play, and I've gotten a bunch of my coworkers to play, and so on and so on. It's quite sad, really.

Anyways, anyone keeping up with the current set? I played during Invasion & Odyssey blocks mostly, took a break, and got into it again during Ravnica. My friends and I are all really obsessed with Time Spiral (going to the pre-release didn't help things).

The last set I bought from was 5th dawn.

And with that, I'm leaving this thread and never coming back, lest the ladies see me here ;)

edit: since I'm unlikely to ever go back to Magic, would any of you be willing to buy some cards off me?
I had quite a formidable collection.

I used to have a measly collection of 1000 cards...now I'm down to my high school red, white, and green decks. I haven't touched them in 6 years and I don't have a reason to, although I had pretty good memories of swapping cards back then. I didn't start playing till 10th grade and stopped in 12th, and at Otakon two years ago I saw other people playing Magic. So the next time I go there, I'll bring my Urza-block deck and see how it stands against whatever's new these days.

A friend got me into it during my last year of high school. I played obsessively just prior to and throughout the Invasion block. I had a killer red/black deck that was pretty much unbeatable at one point. After annihilating my friend's green/white deck for the first time, he looked at me, half shocked, half proud and told me he'd never teach me how to play another game again. :D

I stopped playing because it got to be a hassle to stay up with all the new cards. I still miss it, though, and definitely wouldn't mind picking it up again.

ah, i thought this thread was about good ole fashioned card tricks. me likes that kinda magic.

I had quite a formidable collection.
Hahaha, that's what all my friends thought, too, which is why none of them have their old cards anymore. And I might be interested... what blocks?

I played because my friends were in it and now im playing again to beat this one person that I would always lose to. After im done beating him im off this stuff cold turkey.

I won a black lotus card in a drawing held at the now defunct Wizard of the Coast gaming center in Seattle back about 8 years ago. The card had a tear in it so by thier rules, back then, you couldn't play it in tourny's, I sold it for 75 bucks to a kid which got me a shit load more tokens to use in the arcade there.

I've never owned one Magic card, learned about how to play, tried to play it, or associated (AFAIK) with anyone who played it.

i played up until the one with the stupid story (weatherlight?)

but my golden era was mirage/vision - that was when the art was pretty decent and the gameplay was fun.

i played thru highschool but most all of my friends were too cool and undorky to play with me so i stopped playing.

i think i had more fun building decks than actually playing.

I played from 3rd Edition/Dark through Onslaught a long long time. Used to play 10-15 hours a week when I was in middle/high school. Probably had about 20000-30000 cards. Was ranked #6 nationally in the arena league at one point.. I quit playing when it got to be too expensive with a new set every couple of months. Every once in a while I see some new cards and I really think they are getting desperate.

I used to play around the time of 6th and 7th editon but it's been a long time since I picked up my Magic cards. I wouldn't mind playing again but I don't have the time or money.
I did play a little bit during my senior year in high school but I used the extra decks other people brought to school and I wasn't very good because I didn't know any of the new cards.

That fucking shady ass place? I remember I would always look in the back and there was always a bunch of geeks yelling and screaming random shit to each other while playing games on the computers. Then there were those big statues everywhere. I mainly went there every once and a while to check out the cool board games out and just walk around to see what other people were doing. I think it went out of business like 2 years ago? Now it's a weird fantasy furniture store.

yeah, i looked at some newer cards and was not impressed.

they make all the older cards way obsolete which is lame.

If you guys haven't checked out MTG in a while, the latest set (Time Spiral) has a lot of throwbacks to older blocks, since the plot has to do with time travel and whatnot. The set includes reprints of old cards and is pretty big as a result (422 different cards). Probably a good time to get reacquainted, especially if you're the nostalgic type.

BAH, it was better back in the day, and i'm stickin to that even if it means missing out completely on something new and interesting.
liquidnight I might be interested do you have any unglued or unhinged?
unfortuneately, I dont have them in great amounts. I have ~60 unhinged and a foil Ass Whuppin' (I think it was only available at launch events, I got it from a friend).

For those who have expressed interest in my cards, here's the best I have to offer:

Foil Masticore
3x 8th Ed. Birds of Paradise
2x Wrath of God

I played back in the day...started out right before Ice Age came out, and played right until whatever set the one with that shadow thing came out. I always want to get back into it, I just don't have the time or money to invest. It was always so much fun though...no matter how nerdy it seemed.

About the same for me, though I never did much more than a few limited tournaments (pre release stuff). I think I finished just out of the top 8 in the Atlanta Invasion one with a fairly awful deck.

I quit playing because of the expense too, just to stay current and do anything constructed format was getting to be more expensive than buying video games.

I still like the new cards though, I read stuff on the Magic the Gathering daily- In a lot of ways it seems like the Ravnica block would have been a lot more fun to be drafting than I ever had with the Masques/Invasion block.
Liquidnight how much do you want the unhinged for?
dunno. Let's wait on deals and such until the weekend.
I have tons of work for school, so I won't be able to arrange anything with anyone =/.

Feel free to PM me offers though, just don't expect replies until the weekend.
I'll try to get more of my collection up tomorrow.

Same here, I started around the end of Dark and stopped after Ice Age. I've tried playing with some of the newer cards a couple of times but a lot of the stuff just seems way to overpowered.

How odd, I just searched CAG for any MTG discussions earlier this afternoon before this thread was made. I started playing around tempest, and I played pretty heavily until the end of the Odyssey Block. I just found out a few of my friends started playing again, so I'm trying to get back into it now. I'm thinking I'm gonna go buy a box or halfbox of Time Spiral sometime in the next week and see where that gets me.

I started playing casually at Prophecy, quit buying cards by Judgement, and stopped playing either during Onslaught or Mirroden Block from a lack of interest from other people. I started again during Ravinica, playing in some sanctioned tournaments, and I'm debating how much longer I'm going to keep playing, with the constant price hikes and a declining interest. Ravnica Block (and possibly Time Spiral) are great sets to start playing again, though I do agree that the power level has increased a significant amount in recent years.

i was actually just about to post my old cards (stopped playing a good 7-8 years ago) on craigslist, but if you guys would rather buy them i'd much rather sell them here. PM me if you're interested and i can give you details, photos, etc.

i typed this list up a year ago when i intended to sell some but never got around to it; not promising it's totally accurate (and it's grossly incomplete) but it's a good starting point. i'm waaay out of the loop, but i believe most of them are their original editions (mostly Revised, i believe), and in good shape for the most part (i played with them, some in plastic sleeves, some not). anyhow, PM me.

I started playing right as Fallen Empires came out and played fairly hardcore through Weatherlight i think, maybe a little after. It's all hazy. I stopped when most of the people I enjoyed hanging out with went to college or just stopped playing and I was left with the complete nerds. Also I got a job, which cut down on my free time anyway.

My brother and I used to play MTG quite a bit, mostly just against each other. I've known one or two other people who were into it a little, but I never recruited anyone too hard to try it (Maybe because I'm way to old for such "nerdy" pursuits) I started playing around Revised and then kind of stopped and started on and off again for years.

I've also thought about selling my old cards. I've got lots of rares and even a few complete sets. I don't have any of it organized into lists, but anyone interested, or if you're looking for any particular card(s), feel free to pm me and we can see if I have anything you want. I'm going away for a week in just a few days, so if I don't get back to you right away, I will as soon as I can.

I started playing around Revised, and kept at it until Mirage/Alliances. I stopped, because everyone I knew stopped around then.

Then in college(around Onslaught), I noticed a few friends still played. Naturally, curious as to how one of my old decks would manage against theirs, I proceeded to get whupped.

And that just dragged me kicking and screaming into the fray again. I discovered my now favorite creature type, Slivers, and whole bunch of fun new deck types, like Cogs.

For some of the people who mentioned the art, recent are has been beautiful. Ravnica, for instance.

I was also an MTG playing starting from revised and ending at around alliances but just like judyx3, these time spiral cards are getting my attention. I enjoy the game but I seem to be a more casual player playing with a small circle of friends and am impressed at those that play on a tourney level.

I recently purchased a few boosters of time spiral (foolishly) hoping to get good timeshifted cards like psionic blasts but I got some real winners like swamp mosquito, honorable passage and suq'ata lancers.

All of my friends played in middle school. We're all in our mid 20s, so like 11-12 years ago? Pretty much all of them stopped with Ice Age. A lot of you guys mention stopping because of time and finances. I think parted the reason we started again was because we're all working now (but don't have families yet), so more money and time now.
I discovered my now favorite creature type, Slivers, and whole bunch of fun new deck types, like Cogs.
Has Time Spiral's Sliver revival made you pretty happy then? I know some of my friends are excited about playing with Slivers again. And I definitely agree with you on the art: the new cards are definitely much more aesthetically pleasing than the ancient stuff. btw, what are Cogs?
I recently purchased a few boosters of time spiral (foolishly) hoping to get good timeshifted cards like psionic blasts but I got some real winners like swamp mosquito, honorable passage and suq'ata lancers.
I got a Psionic Blast in one of my packs, and my friend had to give a mini-lecture on why it's worth so much and what makes it so good. I apparently still have a lot to learn :p

I'm glad you guys are posting up lists. I know I'm looking for Coat of Arms, if any of you guys have those.

I bought two starter decks when Revised came out, and I bought that Player's Guide too (which I still have). It's pretty cool looking through the Player's Guide today, the game has changed so much. Remember playing for ante? Anyways I couldn't get my girlfriend into it then, and none of my friends played so I just kind of gave it up.

Then a few years ago I stumbled upon Magic Online and started playing. I played in online leagues pretty often and played a lot with the free 8ED starter decks. I still log in every once in a while for a quick game or two, but I haven't spent any money on it in a long time. I'm hoping when version 3.0 comes out it will revive my interest in it.

if anyone has cards from the last 3 blocks and want to sell post something in here. :D I want to make a type 2 deck since my friends dont like my type 1..

Sweet, just picked up a booster and tourney pack of Time Spiral. My first booster in quite a while and I happen to get a foil rare, Word of Seizing. While it is quite worthless, still pretty lucky. The ok rares I got were Jaya Ballard, Task Mage and Magus of the Disk. Not bad, I'm pretty pleased. I think I'm gonna try my luck with some Ravnica packs next.

I also was one of those Revised-Weatherlight or so kids.

This is sort of off topic, but considering the Magic players are only a subset of CAG anyway: did anyone else's joy over MTG cause them to stupidly try a bunch of other trading card games? To this day I have a box of Highlander: The Card Game (or whatever its full name) expansion packs in my closet. There were a couple of insanely awesome games like Netrunner, or especially Shadowfist, but for each of those there was a Highlander or a Gridiron or the Mortal Kombat Kollectable Kard Game.

It was a less-than-flawless victory, I'm afraid. I've still got the c(k)ards to prove it. :(

I've got you WAY beat. I've got SIX WCW Nitro Trading Card Game Booster boxes, and I'm planning on buying a few more.

I started in Revised/Fallen Empires and ended in Tempest, though I have some Legends and Dark cards. I moved and changed jobs, and didn't have a new circle of nerds to fuel my addiction.

I still have all my cards. I'm waiting for my son to get old enough to really get the concept -- he's at the Pokemon appreciation stage now.

I just started playing during the summer. I had always had an interest, but honestly, I'm ashamed, but the whole "it's too geeky" thing got to me.

Anyway, I started this summer with my cousins, and we started with a couple of booster and starter packs. We had so much fun playing it. Then I did some research and realized I was wasting money buying booster packs.

I was getting pretty into it, but then I'm back at college now. And hadn't given it a second thought till now.

Unless they're of the more pathological "tourney rat" variety (That's probably too mean... rats smell better than that.), I think that's the story for the majority of people who play.

I played a short while (a couple months, maybe), back when I was in Jr. High, and then stopped playing until one of my friends at work took out a couple decks from his desk. From there, a group of my friends from work started to draft once a week (12-15 a week for 3 packs of card, a couple beers and a couple slices of pizza isn't bad. :D )... but that we're all geeks to begin with helps (IT pros, programmers, etc).

The new set is pretty fun.... I'm really enjoying some of the nostalgia, because most of the time I played magic when I was younger, the majority of the decks I had were built out of the box of Fallen Empires (home of the thallids, orcs, goblins, thrulls and homarids) that my dad bought me for $20.
i still have my collection.. it's friggin huge.. more than i can catalog.. I'm trying to sell it though...
The smart money says that 95% of it's wasted space, and not worth much more effort than 1. Giving it away, 2. Selling it at bulk common price, 3. Throwing it in the garbage.

well I'm not throwing them out...not with the some of these cards Sliver Queens, Lord of Pits, Royal Assassin, lots more rares..

I started during Unlimited and sold off around the time Fallen Empires came out. I probably made a good $1000 profit in the process. Unlimited Mox Ruby and Mox Pearl...quite a few other rares I got out of random packs. Sometimes I wish I had kept those so I could have sold them now for a LOT more.
well I'm not throwing them out...not with the some of these cards Sliver Queens, Lord of Pits, Royal Assassin, lots more rares..
The point is... there are nearly 9,000 different magic cards in existance. I'd guess that less than 900 of them are worth more than about a dollar, and likely around 90 of them have any real value.

Of the three you mentioned, only the Sliver Queen actually retains much value, unless they others are Alpha/Beta. (I've seen Lord of the Pits rot in the 50 cent boxes most local dealers have, and even when he's Standard legal, Royal Assassin tends to top out at $2-$3. (And that's what dealers will charge)

Star City Games buylist is a good tool to use to get a more actuate idea of what your cards are actually REALLY worth.
