So I'm in the market, I've got a little 4gb thing and it's on its last legs as far as space and ware and tear. I'm looking at the Zune HD, it's got better size/price ratio (16g for 170 @ amazon) than the iPod Touch and seems to have some decent functionality (HD radio is a big plus) but overall seems to lack in apps and I hear the web browser isn't quite as good. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If you want apps, just get an ipod touch. There are really no other mp3 players that can touch it on those grounds. If you want better sound quality, depending on your budget, get a Sansa Clip+ which comes with regular radio, a sd card reader to expand your space, and voice recorder. If you want videos and sound quality I would recommend a Cowon S9 or J3, both of which have an amazing screen and robust equalizer options. Beyond that the Samsung p3 is good and a little more userfriendly than the s9 and j3, but with a little worse of a screen, but it has a built in speaker for when you want to listen without headphones. All of these have a recorder and radion by the way. The J3 is the S9 but with a different body and an sd card slot to make it bigger if you want. It also has a better UI but that has already been ported to the S9 to use.

Also, zune needs the zune software to work. These others are just drag and drop. If you want more help list what you consider the most important in order. Seems like you want wifi, which all of my suggestions do not have.

As a zune HD owner I say unless the app thing really bothers you go for it. My zune has been solid since the day I bought it. Great sound quality and responsive touch screen. The zune software is actually quite good especially in comparison to bloated itunes. I've previously had an ipod nano, a sandisk sansa, a 30gb zune, and a 3rd gen Ipod and the zune HD is by far the best player I'vr used for pure music listening.

Really? Back when I still had my Zune the software was bloated as all hell. Plus the heart and broken heart to add music was a pain.

As far as I know of the heart icon is only for making songs your favorites so they come up more often in the smart DJ mix. As far as adding songs you just click on your collection then right click on any albulm or song and select sync to zune. That easy.

I'm still on my iPod Classic.

I want a Touch, I'll get one once they upgrade the body to the new iPhone's style. Otherwise, I feel like Apple doesn't give a shit about the "full" iPod anymore, focusing more on the lesser models and ignoring consumers that want the big daddy.

I have an ipod touch and it's freakin amazing in terms of apps/games. There are soooo many free games and $.99 apps that are really awesome. iTunes can be a pain in the butt and it takes forever to sync because it wants to update and backup every single app I've ever bought before it actually syncs the music I want. My dad has a Zune and the interface is nice but I prefer the touch's. I can't speak for sound quality because I don't care enough to notice. Of course the touch will be the most expensive per GB but I think it's well worth it for the access to the app store and for the coolness of an ipod.

Sooo basically if you want games, get a touch.

Edit: Also if you decide to get a touch, wait a few weeks because Apple will most likely unveil the 4th gen touch which is rumored to have a front facing and back facing camera with Facetime.

I've always been a fan of the software, it's not nearly as bloated as iTunes (Only about 50mb of RAM) it has a prettier but still functional interface and it doesn't try to install tons of other crap all the time.

Venom: How durable does it seem to you? Also, how's the web browser?

It's extremely durable from my experience. I carry it around everywhere in my backpack and it spends most of the time in my front pocket at work and it's taken a couple of shots to the concrete floor and come out fine. As far as the web browser goes I don't use it much but when I have it was fast and responsive if not a little barebones.

Do you think they'll switch to the new body style? With the side buttons, etc.? I hear conflicting info on that. Supposedly if they wanted to match the iPhone's camera resolution, they need a bigger body because the camera piece simply will not fit in the existing Touch chassis.

Those are the pictures claiming to be the 4th gen touch with the hole for the front camera. It's hard to tell from those what the full body style will be like but I think it looks the same as the other gens. I have a 8GB 1st gen that I love but it completely full of stuff and is not running so well. I'm hoping Apple will reintroduce the 16GB size and I can talk my parents into getting me one for Christmas.

I bought the Sony Walkman Red NWZ-E344 and its the best mp3 player i've ever had. My previous ones were a 2gb iRiver, 80gb iPod, 8GB Zune, and 80GB Zune. The software is extremely easy to use (Windows Media Player) and it has customizable settings for the equalizer. I purchased it for ~$72.

I am looking for an mp3 player for a christmas gift. I am looking to spend approx $100 or less. Not looking for an Ipod Shuffle or Nano as they are too small. What do you guys recommend for one?

I would go with the 32GB iPod touch .....definitely not the Zune HD.

reason:

1. The amount of apps on the appstore is KraZy !! .....the Zune app store....not so much
2. All the accessories ( you can find them for so cheap online )
3. Jailbreaking ( this alone is a reason to get an ipod touch ) there are A LOT of advantages to doing this that I cant talk about on CAG.
4. Camera ( the newest ipod touch has a camera so that is a plus ).

Just curious.. I have a Droid that came with a 16gb microSD card and I feel like it plays music just fine and there's no need to bother with a second device.. am I crazy for not wanting a separate player?

That's one of the problems of the iPod touch - there's WAY too many apps/games for it. There aren't really any sites that review them or have any news either.

And let's face it, folks, most "games" on iPod touch, aside from a handful of them are glorified flash games.

That being said, I have an iPod touch and really like it.

about all I use it for anymore is surfing for porn and youtube booty videos to wack it to though.

The problem is there are TOO many apps? What the hell?

Touch Arcade does a nice job showcasing games and the CAG thread here is a great place to get some ideas of solid apps.

Get a touch, BTW.

I feel like people are crazy for wanting a seperate player. Your phone is fine (like many CAGs here) and also plays music so why not let it do just that? I dislike ipods/mp3 players because your phone is fully capable to play music. Why spend more money and carry another device around? To me, it's more like, "hey he/she has a Ipod/touch so I need one, too. Everyone has one!"
Save your money and learn about your phone's capabilities. Most people are going to be fine with 8-16 gig cards filled with music. There are individuals that need more than 100 gigs but that's just overkill, IMO.
I also HATE Itunes. Drag and drop is the best thing ever and nothing will be easier than that.
now that the new iPod Touch is out, there's no reason to not go with it.
Two words: Apple and Itunes.

iTunes sucks. I have twice now lost all the music on my iPod Touch. I just reformated my coumputer and could not get iTunes to get the music from my Touch to load to my computer. All it would do is synce it and doing that caused me to loose everything but the apps. Does the ZuneHD offer bluetooth? If it does then when this thing goes out I might just get a ZuneHD. Blue Tooth is why I got my iPod Touch as I wanted a wireless headset and didn't want to get one that I had to plug something into the headphone jack to use them.

Well turn off automatic sync.

You do realize you can drag and drop in iTunes. Just thought I would let you know.

I never had any issues with iTunes.

All I do in iTunes is drag and drop.

Just click "Manually Manage Music" on the summary tab of your device when connected to iTunes.

Download PowerAmp. That alone arguably makes the Droid an iPod killer. Only drawback is Droids don't get nearly the battery life my iPod Classic gets.

I'm aware of that but how about dragging and dropping from itunes(ipod) to hard drive? Or how about trying to sync the apple device on a new computer? It just isn't as user friendly as in the drag and drop I am referring to and seems to want to erase your songs more often than not.

Well, I agree on that because so much shit comes out that you have to wade through a LOT of garbage to find something good. And review sites just don't have the manpower or motivation to review all that and let you know what the best is. Real quality stuff gets lost under a pile of cloned garbage from people that just churn this shit out so they can make a side business out of it. Like the 5,000 $20+ "clocks" (which look nice as hell, but seriously...$20 for a fucking clock skin?!) you have to wade through on the Android marketplace just to find a good one that maybe costs a buck.

I have to give another vote for the J3

Godly Sound Quality
Godly Battery

It excels at what it does and it is king at its field :D

Does it rival the S9 in terms of sound quality you think cuz I know the J3 is much more expensive.

Picked the Sammy P3 8g for $90 used earlier this year and it was a damn good deal. Just wish it had a feature for "Just added" songs, maybe I can DL one. Using Sennheiser PX100s btw.

No, the J3 is not better than the S9 in sound quality. Although, there were members who claimed the J3 sounded richer.
The S9 and the J3 use Jet Effect 3.0

The only edge that the J3 has over the S9 is its battery life and its expandable memory slot.

I grabbed a 16gb microSD card on BF and i was dieing to get one. i ran out of space =/

I was gonna grab a Sammy P3 but i didnt.
At that time, i was also looking at the new Phillips PMP which looked promising.

I dropped both ideas and went for the J3 :D
