Limited free membership for FFXI?

CAGiversary!
The only thing stopping me from being certain I want the FFXI w/t HDD is the high membership fees. If I'm not mistaken, it's 14 dollars with one character and a dollar more with each additional character (if I'm wrong, please correct me). I'm wondering if there'll be a free membership limited to a certain amount of time like on PSO and EQ. Does anyone know if there will be one? 'Cause I'm not sure if I'll like it that much since I consider voice chat a pretty vital part of online gaming and really enjoy it. The thought of having to type msg's with a virtual keyboard or buying a PS2 keyboard also doesn't sit well with me. So does anyone know the answer to my question?

Service and Subscription Fees (applicable to PlayStation 2 and Windows versions)

- FREE subscription for 30 days

- FINAL FANTASY XI: $12.95/month

- Additional characters: $1.00/month per character

- Tetra Master: $1.00/month

- Payment method: Visa / MasterCard

Perhaps somewhere along the road they will start having those game cards like EQ has for 9.99

Yes it would have been nice to have had voice chat, but unfortunately that isn't happening. If you are going to get it, you will need a keyboard, trust me. It will take too long to type anything using just your controller.

What's Tetra Master? I guess it matters now if there is anything else I really want when my birthday comes around. 'Cause if I wanted extra space I'd just buy a new mem card and I don't wanna pay $100 for some Socom 2 extras. It doesn't seem so special to me since I have Xbox Live. So, I guess if XI is REALLY good, then I'll get it.

So, if I payed a dollar extra, I'd have the ability to play an in-game card game? That's one of the, no, that's THE stupidest fee I've ever heard of.

if they came out with game cards u could actually buy, i'd buy this game right away. cause i dont have a credit card yet and my parents dont really trust giving card info online.

Stupidest fees ever? Tetra Master wasted away half my play time in FFIX. I'd pay an extra 10 bucks a month to play it against other people. It's sooo addicting.

Yeah it is quite addicting. It was an in-game in FFIX but now you play against people online. So it gives you an option of playing for an extra $1 a month. I really didn't play it once since I was busy with FFXI, but many of the other people I would play with loved it, they would spend just as much time getting cards and playing others for cards than they would on FFXI itself

and yes, FFXI is really good. Heck during the beta test I did not play any other games but FFXI. People are quite friendly, and well if you get it when it comes out they will be a lot of lower level characters and not just the Japanese and PC players. I understand doubt in buying a huge memory card, because in my opinion that is what the HDD is. I have yet to hear any true announcements of using it besides FFXI and Socom II.

i was also wondering this.....when i bought final fantasy XI for PC it gave me 30 days of free play but i didn't install it right away i installed in like 10 days later....so does that mean that i just lost ten days of free game play? or does the free 30 days start from the time i install it

Well, I kinda gained my parents' trust now that I have an Ebay account and my dad finally agreed to let me get on PSO (but I only played the first free two months anyway :D ). I only had to ask him once when I wanted to use one of my Two Month Free Xbox Live cards, he took it out of his wallet and just threw it to me. So, I think my dad would let me use his credit card for this, but it's my allowance, not his money. That's why I'm a little iffy about this.

I was just thinking of trying to increase my chores with a big monthly one to support my monthly fee if I even get XI.

After I got off the Xbox last night, I went and watched Tech TV. Then I saw it, the Final Fantasy XI commercial. MMORPG at it's highest. At that moment, I just caved in and decided to get it. I asked my Mom about the big monthly chore and she said she'll try and think of one. I was just wondering though, when I get on (if I got it the day it came out for PS2), would I be surrounded by low level PS2 players and then highlevel PC players (Americans) and Japanese players?

There'll be lots of newbies on the first PS2 day but there'll still be a few new PC users too and low level people who are starting new characters or leveling subjobs so they'll be low level again.

Just to give folks a heads up, remember Square charges you on the first of the month.

If you sign up before or after, your second monthly fee will reflect this (I bought the PC version on November 25th - I ended up paying 13.99 + 2.90 for my second month to balance it out to the first, then the subsequent months are only 13.99).

It was a really, really well done MMORPG. The only downside is the FF name attracts alot of gamers who aren't familiar with the rules of MMORPGs. I must have died twenty times during one really long session because MMORPG newbies had no concept of pulling mobs or they constantly trained near zones, etc.

Try to remember that many of these new players have no concept of MMORPGs, so cut them some slack if you die due to their sloppiness.

Wait, so if I got it on launch on the 23rd of this month (that is the release date, right?), tthen I used the 30 days free, would I have to pay for the week or less left on the next month? I'm kinda confused how that would work.

I was too with that post. I think what he means is basically you will play free from 23rd of March - April 23rd. Then from 23rd April to 30th April you will get charged a small fee like 2.99 or something, and that will happen on the 1st of May. So you pay 13.99 for all of May and 2.99 for that small amount in April.

The free trial will cover you through April 23rd. However, there is still another week left before May 1st. So Square will inform you how much a week will cost you (Based on when I played, it should be something like $3). When May 1st rolls around, Square will collect the monthly fee for May (13.99) along with the fee for the week you played at the end of April. This will only occur for the second 30 day period (first 30 day period is free).

Bottom line: Expect to pay about $17 for the second month.
uhh no
he will be billed on the 23rd of each month..

what are you smokin
Unless Squaresoft changed their policy.

On page 9 of the PC manual it states

"All Content ID fees for the current billing period are added up on the first day of each calender month"

Unless, he magically has an overdue payment which is charged immediately after his card has been approved.

And on page 10

"3. Prorated monthly fees for Content IDs that are active as of mignight Pacific Time on the day after your free trial period ends are included in a charge. Additionally, the fees for Content IDs purchased or reactivited after the end of your free trial period but before the end of the month are included in a charge. Full monthly fees are prorated on the number of days between the end of your free trial period and the end of the month. Please note that this the only time monthly Content ID fees are prorated."

In lay terms, Square only charges you for time not covered in the 30 day trial period till the first of the month. In this case, gamers will be charged for April 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th, and 30th. Then, you'll be charge the usual fee to cover May.

well thats only logical though, it's not like just because you stated in the middle of the month that they'd give you an extra 15 days of free play.

It makes sense, but it was the first time I've come across a company waiting to charge until the first of a month. I know SOE started charging the day after your trial period ended, regardless of the day.

I guess its easier on Square to collect from everyone on a specific day, rather than trying to deal with half a million subscribers. They're still technically new at this and anything to elevate any pressure is probably welcome.

Still, I wanted folks to be aware that their second month may be a little higher than usual. I can't imagine the hysteria that will run rampant through Gamefaqs.
