List of Games That Aged Poorly (no longer fun)

Counter-example: FF7 looks bad with its lego-block characters, but it's still FUN to play & had a decent story. Ditto Goldeneye. So neither belongs on this list.

Body Harvest
Donkey Kong Country
Driver
Final Fantasy 1/2/3 (the 8-bit versions) - almost no story & too repetitive
Gran Turismo 1/2 - feels fake
Legend of Zelda (nes) - same flaw as FF1/2/3
Mario Kart 64 (but the SNES version is still fun)
Medal of Honor Allied Assault
Mortal Kombat 1/2
Moto Racer
Perfect Dark
Pole Position
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Silent Hill 1
Star Wars- Rogue Squadron 1
Timespliiters 1
Tomb Riader 1/2/3
[Old Sports Games]

deleted:
Goldeneye
twisted metal 1
Parasite Eve 1
Syphon Filter 1

Goldeneye 007/Perfect Dark

Both seem rather primitive compared to today's shooters. Especially with the slower framerates and choppy graphics (more noticeable in Perfect Dark).

Except for Gran Tourismo, those are all playable for me...

What hasn't aged well at all are things like Twisted Metal, Syphon Filter, Driver, Moto Racer... Those were all huge at one time, and what are they now? Garbage. A lot of games from that era that don't have some other redeeming quality, like RPG's or great gameplay, really suck. Especially the sports games. At least its fun to go back and play NHL 94 on the Genesis.

Donkey Kong Country was so cool when it came out . . . now it seems so limited.

Still a good game but I just can't devote time to it.
For example, FF7 looks bad with is lego-block characters, but it's still fun to play & had a decent story. In contrast, Night Driver with its simplistic "don't hit the walls" gameplay is no longer fun.

Gran Turismo 1/2 - pixelated images make the game feel fake
Legend of Zelda (nes) - same flaw as FF1/2/3
Wait a second, by FF3 are you talking about the Japanese FF2 and FF3 or the American FF2 and FF3?

Well he said NES versions, but even still FF2 and 3 had plenty of story...

All polygon PSX titles have aged poorly.

Body Harvest for N64 aged within 3 months of it's release.

MK1 and 2 are still old school fun for me, but I cannot look at MK3 or 4 (probably because neither of them were very good to begin with)

I'll second Goldeneye being pretty dated, but when that game came out, it was the bomb.

i can still play the FF's, and i think its cool to compare the differnce on the nintendo, like compair mario 1 to mario 2 or 3, its a world of differnce on the same system!

driver... goldeneye
Yeah it looks bad (lo-res), but it's still a lot of fun. Just played it for the first time last year, and I liked it. Enjoyed it more that GTA3.

And goldeneye is still a fun single-player adventure.
None, as far as I'm concerned. If it was fun then, then it's fun now. But that's just me.
You liked Sesame Street "then". Do you still like Sesame Street now? Point - Tastes change as we grow older.

NHL 94 on the Genesis.
I've never played it. How come this hasn't aged?

Yes, as a matter of fact. I also like The Muppets (including Muppet Babies), Hamtaro, Blue's Clues, and other stuff like that.

For some reason, Mario Kart 64 hasn't aged very well (DD made it obsolete) but the SNES version is still fun to play 2P with. I gotta agree with whoever said The Legend Of Zelda hasn't aged well, when I try to play it nowadays I just get irritated with the clunky controls.

(shrug) okay. ----- I don't. There are shows/games I used to absolutely love, like Pole Position (game), or Knight Rider (tv), but I think they are mediocre today.

I thought right off the bat mario kart 64 was inferior to its SNES version. Some of the tracks are much too long and boring

OP, I think it is unfair to ask simultaneously for games that have:

1) Aged poorly -AND- 2) Are no longer fun

They may not necessarily be one and the same. Perhaps if you separated the discussion into two threads?

For example, yes Goldeneye N64 may not have aged particularly well.. but it's still a blast to play. And I think that's where most of the arguing on this thread stems from.

The original Twisted Metal is great. It has bad graphics, but it never had good graphics to begin with. Actually the only games on your list that "aged poorly" are the ones whose graphics were the selling point (Gran Turismo, Parasite Eve, Mortal Kombat, etc.). I agree with CoffeeEdge. A great game will always be a great game. I also still watch shows that I loved as a child/teenager.

I couldn't agree more. OTT hasn't aged well IMHO but Zelda 1 is still a blast to play.

FF1 is still fun to play. Its all about the game play not the story.

WHAT game play? It's the same repetitive, boring random battles over-and-over. ----- Watching wet paint dry would be more fun.

Whoa, Goldeneye hasn't aged poorly but Perfect Dark has? Perfect Dark was basically a far improved version of Goldeneye and both are still fantastic. I also think that Perfect Dark is still one of the best FPSs there is (3rd after Call of Duty & Half-Life 2).

I also disagree with Donkey Kong Country, it has gotten worse but is still great.

Now to add to the list:
Medal of Honor Allied Assault
Tomb Raider Series
Timesplitters

Actually, IMO, PD is inferior to Goldeneye because of the disgusting framerate issues it has. Multiplayer Goldeneye was at least pretty smooth and fast most of the time, but they just pushed the N64 too far with PD, and as such, the slowdown is incredibly bad, almost to the point of being unplayable.

I also totally agree that FF1 hasn't aged well. FF2 and 3j both still kick ass, but I never liked FF1 to begin with, and nowadays it's literally a chore to get through. As a side note, how do you play imported Famicom games on a US NES, anyway? Did you import the system? And if so, are there any difficulties in getting the system to play correctly in the US?

Okay and WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU KIDDING ME THE LEGEND OF ZELDA IS STILL A GREAT GAME DON'T EVEN JOKE LIKE THAT

And I still play Donkey Kong Country with people all the time... one of the best games ever.

I have to agree. Nothing gets the nostalia juices flowing like firing up LtP. Super Mario World, Super Metroid, and Mario Cart for SNES all remind me of when I was a wee lad.

Games I used to adore, but now I can't stand playing-

Goldeneye- I still love it, I always have, always will, but I've done it all too many times.

Star Wars- Rogue Squadron- Nother game I loved to play for hours, but now I just can't find any fun in.

Tetris- A game of Tetris once in a while is good, but once you've played Tetris for an hour, you've just played Tetris.
Whoa, Goldeneye hasn't aged poorly but Perfect Dark has? Perfect Dark was basically a far improved version of Goldeneye
(1) Multiplayer - Neither game is worth playing. There are better, modern games like Halo.

(2) Single-player: Goldeneye is worth playing, because it has a good story, and it's fun to play Bond. ----- PD's story is dumb, and best forgotten. ----- So Goldeneye is still fun to play, and PD is not.

Donkey Kong Country is a poor excuse for a 2D platformer.

Legend of Zelda - I played it for the first time in 2005. I thought it was horrible. Lousy controls... boring dungeons... lame story.

As a side note, how do you play imported Famicom games on a US NES, anyway?
Simple.... just use an adapter. It also helps to have a friend who speaks Japanese. ;-) Or alternately, you can download the translated game.

FF3-nes is the best 8-bit RPG, and it's a shame it's never been Americanized, so everyone could try it. It's very similar to FF4-snes, albeit a weaker story.

I think Donkey Kong Country is a perfectly good game in its latest GBA incarnation. Is it the most advanced platformer around? No. Is it fun? Yes. It's something I can hand to beginners or casual players and be assured they'll enjoy themselves for a while.

The same can be said for many of the other titles in the OP. Rogue Squadron could make a pretty cool DS game if the control issues don't hold it back too much. It would be just one of many N64 titles I'd hope to see make a comeback.

Likewise for many of the PS1 hits. They could make fine entries for the PSP if handled right.
Goldeneye 007/Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark is still the pinnacle of console FPSs.

Altered Beast:
Feels incredibly linear even for a 2D scroller and plays like an extremely basic beat em up. It's still cool to transform into beats though.
The SMS, DC (via Smash Pack) and NES Altered Beasts deserve exta special reconition just because they are so terrible.

I really wish I never replayed it and left it as a good memory.

Tekken 1 & 2
I can go back to Tekken 3,4 and Tag with no problem but the first two games lack the gameplay refinements of it's sequels.

Streets of Rage 1
The sequels do almost everything better (some of othe music and level design is just a little better in this one) but gameplay wise it's not fun to play anymore except for nostalgia.

WWF Attitude
I LOVED this back on psone/n64 but after recently re-purchasing it I think I should have just left this as a great memory. From having everyone in 4p matches constantly pause the game to view the moves lists to the shoddy hit collision to the pitiful lack of animation, it's pretty much unplayable.

King of Fighters 94
Suffers from extremely dated controls and a fixed set of teams that can't be edited.

The problem with this thread is a lot of games get viewed with a touch of nostalgia. A game like goldeneye, on paper is worse than PD, but I spent so many hundreds of hours that if i still pick it up now, goldeneye remains fun to play. Not having deovted the same attention to PD, it lacks the entrenched good times had feeling. Same with mario kart 64, especially if i can play with the same group of friends. But if you have never played an older game during its time, trying it now you might say it is crap.
So what is this thread about, those games you used to enjoy, but no longer can return to and enjoy again, or those old games that might have been great, but for someone who never originally played them, they are not fun?
