WB takes franchise turn with 'Akira'
Studio to adapt classic anime story
By MICHAEL FLEMING

'Akira'
Warner Bros. will turn anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo’s six-volume graphic novel masterwork “Akira” into two live action feature films, the first of which is being fast tracked for release in summer 2009.

WB, which had the “Akira” rights several years ago, only to let them lapse and then recapture them in a spirited bidding battle, is planning a twin-bill that the filmmakers have described as “Blade Runner” meets “City of God.”

Studio has closed a seven-figure rights acquisition deal with Kodansha, and has set Ruairi Robinson to direct a script by Gary Whitta (“Book of Eli”). Andrew Lazar’s Mad Chance will produce with Appian Way’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson.

Each feature will be comprised of three of the books in Otomo’s series. The drama takes place in “New Manhattan,” a metropolis that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years ago.

Robinson, an Irish helmer who has been Oscar-nominated for his short film and commercials work, is making his feature debut.

The project was brought in by exec veep Greg Silverman, who has supervised “300” and “Batman Begins.”

Lazar is producer on the WB comedy “Get Smart,” and he’s about to start production on the Jim Carrey-starrer “I Love You Phillip Morris” for Europacorp and Fox Searchlight.

Appian Way is producing the John Cusack-starrer “The Factory” for WB and Dark Castle.

i've had the original for a month now and still haven't watched it.

Im not into anime at all but i've heard this was an amazing movie, so i guess ill watch it.

Remakes almost always dissapoint huge fans of an original film, hopefully this isnt one of them.

Oh it'll disappoint for sure.

But I'll watch.
At least they'll follow the manga more closely.
First film is for volumes 1-3 of 6.

I remember watching the original Akira on VHS when i was 10 and not knowing what the fuck was going on, everything was so extreme and violent and creepy as fuck and i felt like i was losing my mind. I dont think Live action would do it justice...and Im hating how everything is going CGI and Green screen.

Here is something by the director. He seems capable.

Alkira is the closest thing to blade runner meets anime i can think of. That said, I'm betting this is gonna suck. Just because the original is perfect as it is.
In the article they call it 'Blade Runner meets City of God', which I thought kinda worked.
I just mean from the cyber punk perspective, there was a lot of that in both akira and blade runner. Plus all of the extreme contrasts in colors, lots of neon like colors.

Shit, I was 17 and didn't know what the fuck was going on. In fact, I think a lot of people don't know what the hell happened. I kinda understand it, but it's not 100% clear.
But will Rosie O'Donnell play Horribly Mutated Blob Tetzuo?

This is the burning question.
She kinda already did in an episode of South Park where the Dawson's Creek trapper keeper destroys mankind.

I've seen the movie plenty of times and i still don't completely understand what's going on. I think thats kind of the point though, because most of the characters are just as confused and scared of whats happening.

Read the manga to understand fully.

It's like 1 of the 5 manga I've actually read.

The movie feels like only 25% of what I read.

I usually hate anime for a myriad of reasons, anime fans being the biggest. The Akira manga is a HUGE exception to the rule. It blew my mind. That being said, I found the Akira movie to be merely "okay" and unless a miracle happens, I can't imagine the live action version being much better. Even with two movies, they'll be hard pressed to pack all the material in.
so i wont understand it unless i read the manga?
You'll partially understand.

Reading the manga really puts it all together though.

No matter how amazing this is, it's going to disappoint. I don't think it ever should have been attempted but oh well. Maybe the DBZ movie will set the bar so low that ANYTHING will be an improvement.

Thor.

Why must you deconstruct my reference?

Mak: You and I talked about this. They'd never find a good enough actor for D, let alone Regansei. You did suggest Johnny Depp as D, which would be passable. But eh. I don't want the anime ruined (even as cheesy at it is) by a poor live action movie.

I could make a badass Vampire Hunter D. It'd have to be Bloodlust though. The original wasn't all that great in my opinion.

Yess! Just imagine how awesome it would be the first time you see that bad ass tank type vehicle blasting the shit out of vampires by the graveyard.

For some reason my favorite part was when he was riding his horse on top of those huge sand creatures. Just the sense of wonderment I guess.

I remeber being around the same age and peeling off the NC-17 sticker of the movie at a blockbuster and having my mom check it out for me(she just thought it was some cartoon).
Live action and akira I dont see working out to well. I would like to see full story of the Akira comic redone in animation form.

They had better get Kaneda's motorcycle right.

I've always wanted one of those.

And yes I know there have been attempts by companies to make them - I've seen the pictures whenever they were running around on the 'net.

I can't find exact things I was looking at way back when, but here's a site that is probably the same thing. Says the bike was made back in 1988, but I could swear there was a more recent attempt.

I'll look around some more when I'm done cooking.

Here's some more pictures of, I believe, that same bike.

IGN did a preview of a kit you can bolt onto a Honda Fusion but the problem with that is...you're still driving a Honda Fusion.

I really hope this movie will be done well, other wise this will probably ruin Akira for me.
Seems that a lot of animes are getting made into live action films, which doesn't really sound like a good idea if your into anime.

In the 80's Akira (the manga adapted by, I think, Comico?? or Dark Horse? I forget who started the book way back in the day) was mind blowing. Then we saw the movie in teh late 80's and were once again blown away.

The DVD release ruins the original in re-dubbing the voices, which were really damn good in the first VHS release...but sound wrong and fucked up in the DVD versions (and I really hate reading engrish-transrated subtitles over japanese dialogue).

I never found the story particularly confusing....uber-kid with incredible psychic powers gets exploited by the government until he lets loose and (duh) destroys Tokyo. Many years later they are finding kids who still posess that psychic power who have had contact with Akira in their past and now the whole things about to happen again....or some shit like that, based on the movie. (I'v elong since forgotton the substories of the comic series).

But Anime in general today makes me irate......mostly because so much of it is pretentious regurgitated crap with the same characters and the same impossible-to-follow stories. But that would be fine if it wasn't for the fanboy-hard ons that worship the fucking format, who absolutely ruin it for me.

The last Anime I watched that I truly enjoyed was Evangelion, and mostly I HATED the characters...but I loved the idea that they tied it back to religion.....unfortunately the series ended like all Anime does, with a stupid anti-hero whining about how life is unfair. But as soon as I hear someone talking about "Tekkeo Blue Submarine Pachinko OVA!" I do flip automatically into beat-down mode. :(

You hated the characters in Eva? I thought the characters where great they really made the show kinda unique compared to other mech-anime, with all the physiological problems that the Eva characters had.

Have you seen the alternate ending to Eva "End of Evangelion"?

My reaction to this is:
No.

But I rather hate Akira (and most anime) anyways.

Wow, where do you come up with this comedic gold? Rosie O'Donnell is fat, hahaha, woo boy. Hey, could you also do a joke about how Michael Jackson is a pedo, and another about how Tom Cruise is a crazy scientologist?

Let me rephrase..I think the overall premise of Evangelion is very cool, it gets "typically anime" and convoluted and impossible to follow towards the middle and end, but I kinda "expect that" when I dive into a cartoon filled with white panties and big eyes.

The main character is a sad, introverted little emo boy who spends his entire (and I mean entire) time on-screen whining, crying and feeling sorry for himself. By the second episode I was PRAYING he died and was replaced by someone who wasn't so pathetic.

Then there is an emo girl who is another main character who is also introverted, but at least she keeps her mouth shut and just lets us know she's a brooding sourpuss by not speaking. And of course finally the third girl who is, of course, the over-bearing supremely confident "kick ass girl" of which there must be at least one in every anime.

Hmmm..was there a fat comic relief guy in this one? I can't remember if there was or not...maybe that takes a slight chip off the anime mold.

But anyhow this kid is a sort of variation of the STANDARD anime "antihero" who usually spends all of his time brooding to himself about how violent life is, why is there violence, and its just his fate to have to do violence.

Then he'll go kill a dozen ninjas as stylishly as possible.

So yeah, I truly hated the characters in Evangelion...but I liked evangelion.

Its kinda like SIX FEET UNDER: By the end, you hate every one of the characters because they are all either completely pathetic or complete assholes.....but you still enjoy the show :)

Hey wow. CoffeeEdge being a total douchebag and putting his foot into his mouth.

Which means his foot is going up his ass as well, since that's where his head is firmly implanted.

It's a reference to South Park you completely worthless excuse for sentient matter. But let me guess - you hate that too and everyone who likes it, right? And you hate people for saying you hate it? And you bla bla bla bla bla bla.

I can't comment on CoffeeEdge as a person as I don't usually keep track of posting behavior on CAG, but, I can say, South Park is funny, your reference is not.

I guess I missed the part where I said the reference was funny. I was pointing out that I made one.

I guess you and Coffee can sit around and pick at everything that I say, classifying what is funny and what is not.

Because really, that is something I'm very worried about.

Fellas, please stop with the trolling. I like this place and don't want to see it tank over stupid bullshit. Persistent trolling is usually the first sign that things are going south.

Any rumours about casting show up yet?
