For some of the puzzles, some of the words are PG-13, and some are proper nouns that are disallowed by conventional Scrabble rules. I've had "nancy/nance", "merde", "peeing", "Jesuit", "haole" and so forth. It made me nuts, too, but eventually, you'll learn which puzzles require these words. And the "legible" puzzle is just broken, and you'll end up with 17 points if you finish it.
For puzzles where you get 19 points, you can do one search, or two games of Dingbats and one of Seekadoo, which will bring you back to the even score. It's also a good way to break up the monotony. For 18, that's four games of Dingbats and one game of Clink, or two searches. And so forth. The Wikipedia article on LSC has the points-per-game breakdown.
