Preferably from Best Buy, I'm in the middle of moving and I'm gonna have to buy a TV, but with MP collection out on the eshop I think it's time I get a Hard drive too. I don't have much money at the moment, this is why I really prefer I get it at bb so I can charge it there when I get my TV. I know I will need the Y cable if I get one that doesn't have its own power supply, I can get that on ebay, (I would consider amazon but I don't have a credit card.) Any help/advice is highly appreciated, thank you.

Couple of other things

1. A hard drive on ebay wouldn't be out of the question either for the right price

2. It wouldn't have to be more than 500 GB

3. Normally I wouldn't ask this question because I don't consider myself a tech guru, but I know a decent amount, I just want someone who actually has one for their Wii U who actually knows it works.

If 32 to 64 gigs is big enough you could actually use a jump drive (flash drive). They don't meed a Y-cable either which is a plus aside from no power supply and their size. I've only used PNY and SanDisk brands but they have good prices on Toshiba ones -

Sadly it's only available for store pickup, not shipping.

Then there is a 32 gig PNY for a great price too -

^ That one is available for shipping.

Other then that if you need something bigger, say 320 etc, Western Digital and Seagate are great reliable names.

I hope that this helps and good luck my fellow CAG. :)

Edit: I don't use one for my Wii-U as I don't need any extra space but I have used SanDisk, PNY and Toshiba for my PS3 and 360 to watch movies from and transfer data with no problems at all.

Thank you very much, but I read that usb drives aren't very reliable for this because they have a bad rewrite rate or something like that.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Seagate-Backup-Plus-1TB-Portable-External-Hard-Drive-w-Mobile-Device-Backup-BLK-/121556899005?pt=US_External_Hard_Disk_Drives&hash=item1c4d5b14bd

what about this one? It's definitely a big enough size and I hear nothing but good things about Seagate, and the price is decent.

I've never had any problems with my save files on a flash drive for my PS3 or 360, but I've never used a jump drive for my Wii-U.

I don't think it would be a problem but if you are worried then an external is the way to go. Good to have peace of mind and that's a good price for a Seagate, especially 1 terabyte.

For that price I would jump on it. I've used Seagate and WD hard drives for years with my laptop and never had any issues.

I didn't check the seller but either way you have buyer protection. The Seagate is a good find. :)

The only issue with a USB-powered drive like that is that you need a Y-cable to power if off of the Wii U successfully.   Something like this will do the job:

http://www.amazon.com/eForCity-dual-Micro-B-Cable-Black/dp/B005M0ICG2/

http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Gold-Plated-SuperSpeed-Y-Cable/dp/B00L1K1OIA/

The drive itself you picked, OP, will work OK, as I have that a couple of those drives and they've not had any issues for me.   Drives like that from other vendors like WD, Hitachi, Toshiba and the like should also work OK.

I imagine you have a 32gb wii u system. If so have you filled the internal storage so far. Because an external hard drive is kind of a waste of money for a wii u. Since the system itself will hold quite a few games on the internal storage. And the disc versions of games do not need a full install. Plus how many games are you going to be buying digitally? I have like 5 Wii U retail games on my internal storage and it is just now full. I had to buy an external drive to get metroid prime trilogy. Which was a 32gb sandisk usb drive for 15 bucks. Which are about the same price every other week or so at best buy. Since they just swap every other week from pny to sandisk flash sales.

I do have the 32 GB, but I currently have Pikmin, Mario Galaxy, both Nes remix games and a couple other eshop games already installed, and I have Punch out purchased waiting to be downloaded and I still need to purchase MP collection, I think before it's over I'll need to get something to expand the drive space.

I've read that Flash drives fail quickly on Wii u because they have a low rewrite usage or something like that, so I wouldn't trust those.

I wish there was a 500GB hard drive that had it's own power supply plug-in, that would be cheaper and I wouldn't have too much wasted space.

I don't know if this will suit your needs, but this is the external drive I purchased for my Xbox One, and it works great.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IVFDQFM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's 1TB and 7200RPM. I've noticed that games install and load much faster from my 7200RPM external than the 5400RPM drive that the Xbox One comes with. I looked all over and this was the absolute best value I could find for a 7200RPM drive of that size. It doesn't cost too much more than the 5400RPM drive you linked on eBay either.

A good rule of thumb I've noticed from looking for hard drives is that if the website doesn't readily tell you the hard drive speed, it's always 5400RPM without exception.

Edit: Oh, my bad, I literally just noticed that part in your first post where you said you can't do Amazon. Sorry about that. Aw well, maybe this post will help someone else looking in here.
