http://brandsmartusa.com/ has a sale right now on all 42" 720p Plasmas for 389.88, and I know Plasmas burn-in and I have heard they aren't good for gaming...wouldn't that still be a great deal?

I'm just looking for a 42" LCD, LED, or Plasma for gaming...trying to keep the price as low as possible...max of 450-500$, and Brandsmart allows you to haggle and their prices are always great.

I have no idea what to look for...low refresh rates? No idea. 720p, or 1080p?

Thanks for all the help in advance.

I bought an Insignia 42" Plasma at Best Buy this week for $420 and its an absolutely incredibly looking set. Its built out of Samsung parts and it definitely shows in the quality. As far as burn in goes, most modern Plasma sets have alot of preventative features that negate the burn-in problem. I've already played multiple games with stationary hud elements and have yet to have any burn-in problems!
anyways, thats my recontamination. Happy hunting!

There's way too many of these threads. Should just be a sticky for TVs.

Go with a 1080p. If you were going for 37" or below, I would have said to go with 720p. The price will be from lowest to highest, plasma, LCD, LED. Higher refresh rates are typically better, but there's not really any need to go for more than 120 Hz (1/120 Hz = 8.3ms) for a non-3D, imo.

Not going to recommend plasma or LCD, because a lot of people avidly say plasma, but I love my LCD/LEDs.

Well, why is it that plasmas are the cheapest?

From what I understand, plasma just happens to be the cheapest tech to work with... plus I imagine its to attract people that are still wary of the burn in problem (which now isn't).

I absolutely love my Pansonic G25 (2010 model) that I got last year during an amazon pre-blackfriday gold event. If you're getting a 42 incher I would highly recommend a 1080p and use it for gaming and a HT setup.

Your concern with burn-in is understandable, but also realize that burn-in is MUCH harder to achieve with the more recent plasmas than the early day ones. I've played games for hours on this TV with no sight of burn in or even IR. In fact, one night I fell asleep during a Friend's dvd and when it finished the disc it sent it to the home screen, it was probably left there for 5+ hours on that screen and I didn't even have a burn in or IR, tv was working perfectly fine. Oh, and did i mention the tv also has a pixel orbiter that shifts pixels about a bit to help against burn-in.

Now that is not to say and ignore all anti-burn instrategies, but keeping some basic common anti-burn inknowledge in your head is helpful.

Well I talked to a friend last night and he said go with either a Dynex or Insignia branded TV, because the picture quality is the same as name brands such as Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, etc, for a much cheaper price. Is that true? Cause if so, I could get a 46" or 50" LCD or Plasma for much cheaper and would be able to get a bigger size with the money I saved on not buying name brand.

I'm just worried that somehow the picture quality is not as good as name brand, but then again you could just be paying for the name, not the image.

insignia is best buys brand- we had one, it died in a couple months, got a replacmenet, it died. got up graded to one with a built in dvd player, that broke. got a refund and bought a Vizio Razor LED LCD 42" at walmart in feb. for 648- full 1080p at 120hz-and compleatly stomps on my old element 32" lcd and that crap insignia. as for the pic being better like your friend said? he's on crack. my element (off brand of polaroid) was bought on a black friday sale in 2005 and had a better pictur then insignia wich was bought early last year.

Not true at all. Even good brands have bad sets. Bad brands are almost all bad sets. I think the only good cheap brand is Vizio, and they started off as bad as Dynex and Insignia, but have gotten reportedly better since.

I got a 26 in Vizio last year at Walmart during their pre Black Friday sale. Works great for me. Only bad thing I realized was it's not full array LED as I once believed, but only edge lit, but whatever I can play PS3 and 360 on HDMI.

Do you have any input lag from your game consoles with the Vizio?

Well that's upsetting. I would've loved to buy an off-brand for way cheaper and have it work just as well as an overpriced name brand.

Vizio is your best bet in that regard.

Get a Plasma
- Better picture(for dark environments, not as bright as LCDs but colors pop more and are more vivid and colorful overall)
- Better viewing angles
- Low/Mid - Tier models are really cheap right now
- Better response times, especially for gaming, much better than LCDs

I have a 2009 42" G10 Panasonic plasma TV and it is fantastic, and I am extremely picky. For the first month or so, I did have some relatively minor phosphor lag, but it went away with time. Regarding burn-in, I play a lot of games for long periods of time and I've never had any problems. However, I'm a news junkie and have MSNBC on a lot throughout the week, and their white bar at the top of the screen that stays there on every show all day eventually did lead to some burn-in.
