looking for a student credit card

Citibank Dividends Platinum Select Student Card

Cashback:
1% on all purchases
5% on supermarket, gas, and pharmacies

Accumulate $50 cash back and they'll mail you a check.

Should be 0% APY for 6 months for new customers as well as no fee balance transfers.

Their cards have a photo option as well if you like that sort of thing.

At the time I applied, no card on the market offered anything close. Haven't checked recently but I believe MBNA's variants have rewards for various retailers.

This is so true. Sure, you think it would be nice to have until it burns a hole in your pocket and you have $800 in credit card debt. They're just not worth the pain.

Worst advice ever. Without credit good luck getting a cell phone (well, unless you want to pay a 500 security deposit), car etc. You need credit for a lot of things. It may be good not to have one now, but down the road you'd regret it. Just have a system, put 50 bucks in gas a month on it and pay it at the end of the month.

This is horrible advice actually. The best advice is don't buy anything on credit you can't afford. In this day and age, you basically need a credit card or good luck getting a loan for a house.

Or you could be responsible and not dig yourself into debt. Buying things online without a creditcard is quite a pain. Just be careful and always make sure that you always have enough cash to cover your bills plus extra for emergencies. It's very hard to build up a credit history without a credit card to start with.

Also MBNA is very easy source for a credit card, but their interest rates are often quite high.

yea i was just thinking of using the credit card only for emergencies and when i actually have money in the bank so i can build up my credit thing or whatever you call it

luckily i got my debt down to affordable ranges, just don't listen to people when they tell you, it's not a big deal to just put it on your credit card. As for building credit, just having a credit card won't build credit at all unless you charge to it every month. I've found the best credit builder is probably buying my truck, even though it is an expensive way to go.

You could charge 5 dollars a month and pay it off and come out with great credit. If you aren't a complete moron with no self control, you can handle a credit card.

well eventually u need to build up credit through credit card. dont charge lots of money on ur cc than how much u have in ur bank acct. i'm only 18 but i have a cc thru my parents after a co-sign by my dad. i think u can ask ur parents to get u to co-sign a cc for urself. i think u get same apr as ur parents (mines is 7.9 apr right now). i only use it for mainly gas and emergency situations

If you have to have one, I would suggest doing like me and getting a card for one specific place and thats it. Keeps your spending down especially if the place is far away.

I bought my first home without having any credit cards. It wasn't easy, but it can be done. I went throughout my entire college years without a single credit card, and while it may have not been "easy" to buy stuff, I was still able to.

People want to sell you stuff. They will take cash...as long as you have a paper trail proving where the money came from, you will be able to get things like cars, houses.

Agreed! I carried a card with a $5000.00 balance throughout college, and sure enough the balance stayed near the max. Only recently was I completely able to wipe out my balance.

If you are going to get a card, do two things. Make sure you get one with a low limit, and never deal with Capital One.

I actually enjoy my Capital One card. As long as you aren't a moron, the limit doesn't matter. Don't spend outside your range and you'll be fine. I've had my credit card for almost two years now and I've paid every single bill on time. Just monitor what you spend and don't go crazy.
