Looking for advice on buying a used iPod

andrew333

CAGiversary!
i am not very familiar with these devices so any advice would be appreciated

i found someone in the newspaper classifieds willing to sell a 3rd generation 40gb iPod (with all of the original materials) for $325. As I understand they currently sell 4th gen iPods for $400. The kicker is the iPod already has 2,000 songs on it. Not being a music downloader, this intrigues me.

Any general advice on used iPod buying would be appreciated (what questions should I ask?)

Can you guys assess this deal for me?

assess looks like asses

but anyways i wouldnt buy it if i were you. The ipod batteries usually crap out in a couple of months of use(if you use it frequently) and the 2000 songs would depend if you like that kind of music. It could be a bunch of opera or country music. Also do you really need 40GB of music?

Although batteries are very expensive to replace ($100), saying they "crap out" in a couple of months is not only bull but just stupid to say. If everyone bought a $300-$400 ipod only to have them "crap out" months later I kinda doubt they would be so popular.

As for the ipod in the paper, I would personally pass. First the 2000 songs could be just crap in your eyes. If I had 2000 country songs on my ipod I'd just delete them. Two, if you have that kind of money go for a brand new 20GB ipod. You'll be very happy with it and it's not all that likely that you'll use up that space. 20GB (18.5 usuable) is a lot for mp3s.

thanks for tips

the ipod is supposedly only 5 months old so i have to suspect the battery is in decent shape (although you never know why someone is really selling something)

for me the big attraction is the 2,000 songs, the songs are basically identified as the "beatles through eminem" (which appeals to me) and of course i would see the song contents before i bought, i don't own a lot of cds (games are a better value) and i don't download music (damn legal scruples lol) so i thought this might be nice

Go and see it. If it seems in good shape and has good music, I'd go for it. Make sure to ask if you can have it for a week before paying ( or somehint like that) to see if it still is in good working order. Be cautious, and test everything for yourself.

Nah, I think "assess" fits fine. It means "to determine the value, significance, or extent of" :p

No, he's right.
Assess means "To determine the value, significance, or extent of; appraise."
Assist means "To give aid or support."

He wants us to help him assess whether the deal is a good deal for what he is paying.

*EDIT* Javeryh beat me to the punch!

Psh. I just scored a 4th generation 20gb iPod bundled with a car charger, iTrip FM modulator, usb, and headphones for $65 shipped.

(Although there is a slight problem with uploading and battery life.. the performance is supposedly the same.)
