Looking for help with AT&T Wireless

Hi guys, I'm not usually a poster, just a browser, but I thought I'd ping you for any ideas/tips. The wife and I are trying to upgrade our 4 year old basic cellphones, and after a lot of research I've become set on a Samsung Epix for myself. It has the functionality that I want without a mandatory data plan like a Blackberry. I'm running into nothing but problems though, because the only carrier that carries it is AT&T, with whom I already have a month-to-month Family contract. We live in Chicago, IL.

This means that I can't take advantage of any of the various offers for a free phone, or even discounted to

You're pretty much out of luck as far as I know. I've been through something similar and it basically amounted to me just having to suck it up and buy the phone. Cell companies are real good at locking the customer into doing exactly what they want them to do. Others here might be able to give you some tips or something, but I'd say you're probably going to be stuck paying the full amount. You could try going into the store and explaining the situation to them. They might knock a few bucks off that way, but I wouldn't count on it.

As it stands, I'll probably stop by an AT&T store on the way home tomorrow and see what the guys will say, but I'm certainly not holding my breath.

I did check ebay, but it looks like the phones go for more than the $200 which AT&T charges.

If they give you a deal in store but mandate a data plan, you can always just call right after you leave and cancel the data plan if it's not necessary. Otherwise, sometimes if you point out that the price is whatever online, they can price match. Just depends on how nice the sales person is or if you've been doing business with the sales person for a bit. That's about all I have.
