"The boxing game definitely generates the most sweat and calorie burn," said Mickey DeLorenzo, a self-described Nintendo freak since age 5.

That's just a small excerpt from the article. It is an interesting article, and of course ANYthing that requires any sort of movement can be considered a workout. It's nice to see things like this make the news as something positive...compared to OMG BOOBZ!1! ::Hillary Clinton has a fit::

"I think people are actually buying this as a fitness system, which essentially it's not," DeLorenzo said.

Furlong reported that DeLorenzo wants to be a Wii spokesman, like Jared for the Subway sandwich shop chain, and hears rumors that Nintendo is working on some fitness games for the system.

Ok, see. Why are people buying this is a "fitness system". Hey, whatever. Though, the idea of fitness games (that are acurate in terms of burning calories) would be very awesome and I personally would be very interested.

Other then that.. it's nice to see some good wii-views ^_^

Yeah, I've never seen the Wii as that, and I've actually heard a guy say " Yeah, I think I should get it to help me shed off a few pounds. " He's 260, like me. I don't know about him, but I know the easiest way to lose weight is to excercise frequently and diet. So far, no video game can beat an excercise bike in the exercise category. Not even DDR.

However, if they do come up with a good video game that involves some type of excercise then it'll be great.

Well I see DDR as more of THE exercise game. You really do use alot of your body to play that game.. but Wii?

I guess the only way to find out.. is to wait and see what exactly they come up with.

But your right, exercise + diet = weight loss.

I'm on a mission to lose 30lbs this year. I was 176 when New Year's came, I'm now (yes, on January 21st) 164 ^_^

There's just something about DDR that I don't like. It feels like I'm never going at my own pace, you know. If I start out slow then I don't get a good enough workout but if I go at a higher difficulty I lose the game. It's a conflict of interests. :p

I prefer DDR for an intense workout. I know the calorie counter isn't accurate but playing Max 300 or Maxx Unlimited on Standard claims to burn 40 calories for each song (approx. 90 seconds each). Max 300 is 373 steps (2 steps for a jump)

at most, it could tone your arms a miniscule amount. unless you do wii boxing 3 hours a day for ten years.

LOL right?

The FIRST time I played Wii Sports.. I was kinda wiped. But I said"FIRST" time. After you realize you don't have to swing like you're really tryin to fuck somebody up...it takes the cardio aspect down a few notches.

Though, if you're in the room alone and you have good grip on both the wiimote and nunchuk...then I guess beat the shit out of them and burn them calories :p

I've got a Xavix Port system, and my friends and I couldn't hold our arms up for two days after the first marathon of Xavix Tennis. Those infrared rackets get heavy pretty quickly.
I played my friends Wii. My big ass had a little bit of sweat going on the forehead.
Read outside the context of a gaming forum, that's just wrong.

Sure, moving around burns calories, why'd we need this douchebag to tell us that? You could just as easily sit and limit movement to your arms/ wrists too.
However, if they do come up with a good video game that involves some type of excercise then it'll be great.
I came up with this great MMORPG called "The GYM."

To level up, you gotta lift the same weight repeatedly. The only catch is that you can't play for more than two hours, otherwise you end up losing experience. At first it's easy to level up and you can lift more weight pretty easily, but then it's just like any other MMO with diminishing returns and you have to grind a lot longer on the same weight, or perhaps use different exercises. If you fail, you may get injured and you have to go see a doctor and there's an EXP penalty. At high levels you get sent to a level called Rehab...

The game lets you choose your own class, from cardio bunny to yoga master, from ironman to college athlete. You can even pick a trade-class, such as the annoying guy that gives crappy advice to everyone and hits on all the girls, the hot girl who sits there and works out her legs as soon as a muscular guy comes by, or the guy who sits in front and scans people's cards all day.

At first it's free, but after a while, you need to pay a monthly fee to buy in-game currency known as "food." Without a proper amount of food, your character will either refuse to gain weight or lose weight, depending on your class and goals. So you can keep playing, but you won't gain anything. Additionally, you can pay extra money for overpriced supplements that increase your rate of levelling up.

Just like real MMOs, the community is variable. A lot of people have no clue what they're doing even though they might be high level. Also, a hack seems to be making its way around, something called "Ana.Steroids." The developers have stated that if the hack is used right, you can get tremendous growth. Unfortunately, people don't know how to use the hack correctly, even using it at level 1, causing their characters to be permanetly sent to rehab or perhaps deleted... so the publisher has now banned the usage of this hack.

Back in HS when my teacher said "hey want to play a game?" and lead me over to her PC to play what turned out to be a Math Game I felt robbed. I wanted to shove her down and kick her in the face. It’s hard for me to mentally grab onto the idea of a game doing something like making me smarter (better at math). For one reason if it’s teaching me its not a game its lame and I will not have fun and will not play it. Now in this same way if the game makes me fit I feel like it’s not a game that will be fun (sad but true) and as a result I will not play it.

Now I will be the first to say God I wish there were really fun and addictive games that both taught you something worth while (made you smarter) and made you fitter. Wouldn’t that just be a treat? But I am a realist and a pessimist and dont see this happening. I don’t buy into those get rich quick infomercials, the abs systems that you can get a six pack with while sleeping on the couch, or the idea that simple herbal supplements will grow my man stick a foot. So too I can’t see this get fit video game idea will ever work.

Try reading the encyclopedia while on a treadmill.

Seriously though, when I was a kid there were a ton of "instructional" computer games that I thought were awesome - Reader Rabbit, some Carmen San Diego game, and this game called Eagle Eye Detective mysteries (which I'm going to whip out and play one of these days).

Carmen San Diego was awesome, I barely remember Reader Rabbit, but my favorite was The Magic Schoolbus game, good platforming for learning.
