Perhaps so the world doesn't go looking for the rest? Because of all the crazy shit that went down on the island?
How exactly could they just explain away the dead US marshall (Jack: "well, yes he was returning Kate to the states, and was badly injured in the crash and was dying a slow painful death unless we got rescued, so after a couple days this conman Sawyer shot him but only put him in more suffering, so I suffocated him/broke his neck."), the couple that got buried alive, the batshit crazy Others and their shenanigans, Shannon, Boone, Mr. Eko, Michael going off the deep end and offing Ana Lucia and Hurley's girl...just for starters.
While I love the show, it's a bit hard to swallow the suspension of disbelief now required for it. I.e. just imagine an airplane full of every day people, same as Oceanic flight 815 should be. Now how many people on such a flight would be murderers (before even getting to the their time and experiences on the island with many situations that brought up/required killing/murder? Conmen/women? It's just crazy.
Before getting on that plane, thus far we know the following to be murderers:
Sawyer
Kate
Sayid
Eko
Ana Lucia
Sun could have been, she seemed ready willing and able to do so
I'd follow Locke's logic, in that each of these people were brought to the island for a reason. It wasn't an airplane full of every day people.
