BOSTON --Hospital emergency rooms would be required to provide emergency contraception to rape victims under a bill unanimously approved by the Massachusetts Senate on Thursday

Emergency contraception stops pregnancy by preventing ovulation, blocking the egg from being fertilized by sperm, or stopping a fertilized egg from attaching itself to the uterus wall.

It is most effective taken within 72 hours of intercourse and is different from RU-486, which aborts a fertilized egg.

The legislation would also allow women to get the pills from pharmacists without a doctor's prescription.

The Senate spent much of the debate weighing amendments that would have exempted hospital employees, including doctors and nurses, who are opposed to contraception on religious or moral grounds from participating in the dispensing of the medication.

The amendments were rejected.

The 37-0 vote virtually guarantees the bill can withstand a gubernatorial veto in the Senate, which approved a similar bill on a voice vote last year.

A spokesman for Gov. Mitt Romney said Romney had no opinion on the bill, though he acknowledged Romney had indicated during his 2002 gubernatorial campaign that he supported wider access to emergency contraception.

"We are looking at the bill but we won't have an opinion until we get all the information we need," said Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom.

The bill now heads to the House.

I can see it now:

An Ambulance skids up to the emergency room doors barely killing a man in a wheelchair. EMTs stumble out and sprint to the back door of their vehicle. They slam open the doors and unload a woman on a stretcher. Frantically rushing into the hospital they push an old lady to the floor who had on a neck brace and a cane, "Out of the way, lady! We have an emergency here!" An EMT yells. They rush the woman to a medical room and then proceed to yell, "doctor!! we need a doctor in here now damnit!!" Doctors rush in from all over the ER and ask, "what's her condition?"

"She needs emergency contraception now! Hurry damnit, she needs it now!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Ya scrub, since rape victims never need to go to an emergency room  .

It also allows women to get it from a pharmacy without a doctors prescription. It's a way of ensuring that women will be able to stop the pregnancy.

Wow, making light of rape victims. I thought I'd seen it all...

I'm actually making fun of wacko liberal's need to speed up and prioritize the baby killing process.

Not to mention tons of women who weren't raped will claim that they were just to get these pills.

Ya, sure scrub. They won't just go down to a pharmacy and get one since they don't need a subscription anymore:roll: .

Besides, it stops fertilization, doesn't terminate it. And, theoretically, even if it did, how a couple of cells could have any value is beyond me, it has no heart, no brain nothing.

Though it passed unanimously, so it wasn't just us "wacko liberals".

Did you go to science class? Sex ed? There's no baby to kill yet. Essentially what the "morning after" pill is is a concentrated dose of birth control pills. It prevents fertilization. At worst, it would prevent a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterine walls. Gee, some cells. Next time you take a shower, besure to collect all the skin cells you rub off, because there's probably more cells there than what you would get within the time period for using the pill.

And the majority of women having sex are most likly already on birth control, thus not needing the morning after pill. Walk around a college campus. Birth control is not foreign. You might get some girls who had a condom break. Well, I don't see the problem in that, either.

All you succeeded in doing is showing how wacko conservatives try to make everything that looks liberal into a big farce.

Preventing pregnancy is not the same as abortion (baby killing). I'm all for preventing unwanted pregnancies from happening.

Its MA, yes it was. :D

But yeah, I see no problem with this bill.

Massachusetts, leading the way with its progressive bills.... yet also housing the worst drivers in the country. Hmm, it's a toss-up.....

This bill rocks, though. Though something like this would never pass in the Bible Belt, hopefully some other states will also pass it.
Haha, you obviously forget who was rated the smartest state in the nation.
The place with more universities than any other?

Boston drivers are 10x better than NY drivers.

What the hell? The employees aren't the ones taking the medication. Why do politicians argue about the stupidest shit? They're trying to not offend those that are against contraceptives while dealing with a rape victim?

Last time I checked, we did elect a republican governor.

Though, as for drivers, if you know how to drive like a MA driver then your fine. We drive more by what works here, for example when you get to a 4 way stop sign, whoever hits the accelerator first goes. Rarely do you ever see it done the way the law states. Though people don't run red lights or anything.

I found no problem with new york state drivers (new york thruway area), they seemed a nice blend of toronto and boston area styles. Toronto pissed me off though, they drive exactly like the law and right of way states. They never let you turn, change lanes etc. Most aggravating driving experience ever, 10 times worse than boston. Though, oddly, they run a lot of red lights in toronto.

I dunno, my mother said she read that MA has the worst drivers in the country, followed by RI as the second-worst. And quite honestly, with the fucktards on the roads here, I believe it.

EDIT: And people don't run red lights? Go to Rt. 1 in North Attleboro and you will see people run red lights daily. Also, people almost never turn on their fucking blinkers when changing lanes. Usually if f they do, it's a mile before they make the turn and they slow down to 10mph.

...people use their blinkers to change lanes? Pussies.

And I run red lights routinely. In fact, I did it twice to and from work today. I only do it in Brooklyn though b/c cops in SI have nothing better to do than enforce traffic laws. Hell, I ran a light in front of a police station in Brooklyn.

MA drivers are aggresive, but they're good drivers and won't run over pedestrians like we will in NY.

Which brings to mind that girl that got pregnant and had to have an abortion because the pharmacist would not dispense the morning after pill because it was against her religious belief.

I'm only familiar with rt 1 in the danvers area, though maybe I wasn't exactly correct in saying they don't. They usually don't, but when they do it tends to be they went through a half second after if changed. In toronto it would turn red and the next 3 cars would keep going, especially on left turns. You don't see that here. Though they don't use blinkers that much. I think MA and new hampshire drivers are very different than other areas though, you have no idea how many near accidents I had when I moved to toronto, since I was trying to drive the same way there that I do here.

Doctors prescribe the pill to prevent pregnancy. It should be taken within 72 hours of conception.

"It was right after New Year's weekend. I got it as soon as I could," Doe said.

But the pharmacist refused to fill her prescription.

"She just told me that she will not fill it. That she's Catholic, and it's murder," Doe said.

Then, she said, before a crowded waiting area, the pharmacist berated her.

"'You're a murderer. I will not help you kill this baby. I will not have the blood on my hands,'" Doe said. "I tried to explain to her that it's emergency contraceptives, that it's not an abortion pill. She then snatched the form from me, that the prescription was attached to, telling me the paper was full of lies, and she won't be a part of it. I was crying, shaking, upset, so embarrassed. I wanted to run out of the store and hope nobody else could get a good look at me."

"So, did you ever get your emergency contraceptives?" 12 News Senior Investigative Reporter Colleen Henry asked.

"No, I never received that one," Doe said.

"And you became pregnant?" Henry asked.

"I did become pregnant, and I had to terminate the pregnancy. It was very hard. And I didn't want to be what she called me. But that's what I ended up being," Doe said.
