As I write this post, I'm writing from a 13" Macbook, you know, those new ones. I kinda hate it. It's so heavy compared to classmates at school (their computers, not their actual selves), and I find all I really do on here is surf the web, and no...wait...thats about it. I would be playing SNES/N64 Emulators, but I want that on a big screen TV, not on a laptop, and not to mention, all of the decent emulators are on Windows. Do you think it would be wise, to justify the purchase of a netbook, using the cash I got for selling my macbook?

One thing I hate about the netbooks, there all so ugly and FAT looking, O.M.G, looks aren't that much of a factor for me, but come on...those things are ugly. Anyone have one? Pics? Like em?

Netbooks are really underpowered machines.

That being said, I owned a Dell Mini 12 for a short period of time. While it is a light machine with a near full-size keyboard it suffers from a slow 4200rpm pata hd. Also, the Atom processor is quite weak in terms of multi-tasking. I no longer have the computer as I felt it didn't meet my needs to replace my laptop.

What is your budget for this, do you want to upgrade it at all or have a good machine right out of the box?

My budget would be somewhere around ~$1200, as the macbook cost $1500, and thats the amount I expect, as its in mint condition.
You have a super nice, expensive MacBook and you are complaining because it is too heavy? #-o
You should just get an x301 by Lenovo....they can be found within your price range on their Outlet(I've heard good things).

I'll post you some more info later, as I just finished work.

I'll trade you my eee for the Macbook. :p

It's a nice machine. Just a little small and - as others have pointed out - vastly underpowered. You could carry it in a purse or backpack without much trouble, and can use it on the go at hot spots and the like.

But after having one a while, I realized I'd rather have a full sized machine.

Some netbooks are pretty sexy though. It's just dependent upon what you need them for. I know people who own a netbook and an external harddrive, and they seem very content.

Just cause it's expensive, doesn't make it nice. It's heavy! My friends 17" Laptop is lighter than my 13", WTF!? Somethings not right there.

I would be willing to do a Netbook + Cash, trade Strell :p

Whaaa, that's not even possible? What 17 inch laptop does he have that weighs less then 4.5 pounds?!?!

Heh. If I had the cash, I'd think about it, but I really doubt I could cough up enough to make a satisfiable trade.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do, of course.

Fortunately for you, it seems as if Macs hold their value more than PCs, so selling it is an option. If you don't get any good offers, then just dual boot XP or Vista to take care of your emulator issue. As for the computer being heavy...hit the gym some more?

Dude you have a sweet laptop, keep it. If you want to see ugly and fat looking... just have a look at my shit. I'm selling them btw.

Well, another isssue that arises, is I'm not into OSX. I can get all the functionality out of Linux, while putting that other $$$ to other use (like videogames :D). I'd rather have a Linux/Window Duel Boot, over OSX anyday.

Ewww, I had a Dell XPS M1530 before I got my Macbook, I hate that thing. It was such a low quality build, and huge.

I have a 17 inch Inspiron E1705 that is 8-9 pounds and the processor is fucked (Windows rated it a 2.8, it usually comes to around 5 for most people)

Wait, this isn't the whine about my laptop thread? I could have sworn...

Well that was rude.

I got all 5.9s and one 5.8, but ram on both we're 5.0, so my Window rating was 5.0.

@Riyonuk - the M1530's are decent depending on specs.

Was too bulky, cost too much to upgrade to Windows XP, and it smudges...oh the smudges, not to mention pointless things I had to purchase, such as the fingerprint scanner.

See, that's your problem right there. Netbooks are not and never were meant to replace laptops or desktops. They were meant to be inexpensive, ultraportable machines that were just fast enough to get you by on the go, and compliment your more powerful but less portable hardware. Typically, many people only do light computing when on the go and thus the lower specs of the netbook are more than plenty when they just want to sit in a coffee shop and fool around on the web or check their email or do facebook or whatever. If you think you are supposed to be able to edit photos, play games, etc. on a netbook then you don't get the point.

This, sadly, is also probably why it is not likely you will see a netbook from Apple. They are not interested in playing the low margins game with other netbook manufacturers, and to make one that is sufficiently "apple", it would probably have to be much more expensive than the competition, thus defeating the purpose of a netbook and probably making it not sell well. It would probably turn out to be like the macbook air, only a little less extreme in terms of price. Be advised though that I would love to eat my words on this one, cause if apple did release a pretty cheap really small notebook I would be severely tempted to buy. And for no real good reason either :).

That said, I don't think it would be wise for the OP to replace a macbook with a netbook, as they would probably find the computer too slow to use as a primary computer.

One thing I have been really tempted to try is to get one of those Dell Mini9s, and install OS X on it. The hardware inside the Mini9 works well on OS X so I hear, so putting OS X on it is little more than simply copying the install DVD to a HD or USB drive and doing a little messing around with boot sectors or something. Then, everything pretty much works as it should. Video camera, bluetooth, etc. The low price for this makes it pretty tempting and the Mini9 looks like a fun size, but I think ultimately the low screen res would be too limiting for me- plus if I really sit down to think about it I wouldn't really use the netbook much other than novelty factor. I don't go to coffee shops, don't use facebook, etc.

It was more so directed at everybody (Including you but not personally) and not really just to be a dick but call it what you will.

Well, if it really is as underpowered as you guys say, I may have to reconsider. I do not like OSX though, and I know if I got cash for my Macbook, I could purchase a laptop with the same, or better specs, and still have cash leftover.

I wonder if it would be ethical to buy a netbook, and return it, after I played with it a few days.

Warning: Lots of places charge "restocking fees" on laptops.

I guess you could get away with it at Target though. They sell eee PCs last I saw.

I've been reading up on netbooks as of late because apparently my father knows someone who can get them for $250.

The "best" one I've seen so far is the Asus N10; it has a GeForce 9300M and the review I read said it can run CoD4 smoothly (granted, with lowered settings). I doubt it would have a problem multi-tasking, and it seems to be one of the beefier choices out there.

Something tells me it won't be one of the netbooks I can get for $250 though :whistle2:(

Hey OP, you can easily triple boot OSX, linux, and vista or xp on your macbook. I know one of the guys in my class does that. Give that a shot before possibly taking a loss on selling your macbook.

I have the new unibody macbook pro and my gf has the new macbook. The macbook is really light, i'm not sure why your saying its heavy but I have a solution for you. Just run bootcamp, install windows xp and play roms! its really easy and it only took me an hour or so. Get the best of both worlds!

I think the problem is that I don't have a clear idea of what I want to use a netbook/laptop/desktop for. It's like, I want to game, but only once in a while. Such as PSO:BB, or Emulators. But then, I could always mod a console to play emulators too, and what if PSO:BB sucks anyways? I also hate that my laptop only lasts like 3 hours, and classes are longer than that sometimes, and all the outlets are taken up. I believe I saw a Dell laptop that lasted like 9 hours. I hate my life. Oh, and just to clarify why I really want to sell this Macbook...

I would go for a 12" laptop instead of a netbook, best of both worlds. My tablet is that size and is pretty light, but actually has the power to do things like open jpgs. Netbook prices are so out of whack your gauranteed to get ripped off buying one.

Honestly, your not going to get any laptop lighter than your Macbook. The new ones are made from straight aluminum and are the lightest laptops other than the netbooks (which can't do anything other than internet pretty much) and the crazy overpriced Sony's around $2500.
and what if PSO:BB sucks anyways?
I assure you, it does not :D

But really, if you get a processor at anything > ~1Ghz you should be fine. Someone noted that an EEE clocked at 900 mhz could play the game fine at low resolution.
