Madden 08 PS3 vs 360 impressions

Just giving an update, as to how Madden 08 is on the PS3, for those who were looking to purchase the game.

The 360 version to me looks more polished, its obvious that its had more time in the oven, and more time to marinate in the special sauce. But this makes me wonder... just like Oblivion on the PS3 had a little more bake time; and later those improvements were added via a patch, what's the likelihood that EA might offer a patch for Madden 08 (ps3) to give it a little more polish? It was possible for oblivion, so I don't see why it can't be possible for Madden 08.

Side by side there is a difference, but if you just have the PS3 version, I don't think you will feel cheated. I think the framerate is the only real difference, and maybe the odd minute detail here and there. You have to look hard to see the difference in details, and Madden last year ran 30fps, so I don't really think it is that big of deal that it is still 30 on PS3. Expect to see madden ps3 hit 60fps next year.

If you have a 360 and ps3, then you actually have a decision to make. Loud, and hot, versus lower framerate. If you only have a ps3, I don't think any of the differences are show stoppers.

Just my $0.02

The only difference I saw was that maybe the 360 version was a tad bit more colorful. They both look very similar though. The big difference will be in just how the game feels when your playing it. It will be similar to NCAA 08 on PS3 vs 360. They both look and play very good but the 360 version feels just a bit smoother when your playing it. If you have both systems its an easy decision.

I know haters say it looks the same every year, but it looks exactly the same as last years Madden. The announcer sounds exactly the same, where I thought maybe they'd add some next gen Madden and Michaels.

I am thinking of doing up CFL rosters. Madden vs All-Pro: which one lends it self to custom teams the best? Obviously I would have to play NFL rules, but I have been living with that for years now.

~S

If you download the HD video, you can see a clear difference between the two. The 360 version is sharper and has a much smoother framerate.

That said, if you only have a PS3, I'm pretty sure it won't matter that much. For those of us with both systems, 360 looks like the one to get.

That video may be a bit misleading in at least one spot. I'm not trying to say they did this on purpose, however at the 50th second mark. If you pause it... you should see the PS3, and 360 versions in a side by side comparison, offense is in pre snap formation, and about to begin the play. Now if you look at the background quickly it looks like the 360 version has a more detailed crowd, [behing the endzone] however this is because their team is on the 50 yardline, [360 version/team], and the PS3 team is on the 30t yard line (at least). I just felt that wasn't a good comparison of the scope of the field because the 360 version because that version's team was significantly closer to the endzone. They didn't show any running plays for the PS3, which is bad because to really get a good comparison, you should see similar plays being run together side by side. A pass play isn't good for these comparisons, because there's less motion, with the runs you can focus in on the RB and see how he's moving.

The ps3 version looked like the ps2 version from last year when that interception was made. lol Maybe I'll just buy the ps2 version and upscale it!
There will be a patch for Madden 08 - it's called Madden 09 and you can expect it in about a year.
LOL. I am going to use that.

APF by far. Only problem is you can only choose 11 players per team.

Well at least we finally got the ps2 patch for Madden 07

1up scores it! PS3 8.5 / 360 9.0

I think that I'll be good with the PS3 version. I wish it was 60fps but its not mandatory. Just as long as overall the gameplay is good.

i still dont see why people complain and whine about 60fps, since when the hell has this made a difference, if the gameplay is good i could careless, the ps3 games look great no matter what.

it's good for people who own both consoles to know which one it plays better on.

9.0 on the 360? Maybe EA made some good improvements. '07 got a 7.5 from 1up last year.

Also, the PS3 version of '07 got a 6.5.

I've never been a framerate person.. I can't tell the difference from game to game in regards of frame rate. Madden, I've played them all so I have a lot of experience with them. Its all about how the game plays once you got it in your hands. Looking at the photage, there's not that big of a difference. 1up basically validated it by their scoring. THe ps3 got a 8.5 only because its at 30fps 'In Comparison' to the 360 version that's in 60 fps. But I don't think that's failr, I mean the PS3 version should be judged on its own merits.. does the
Playstation 3 version of Madden 08 play good?! I think 1up themselves said that just because one game gets a 8.5 and another 9.0 doesn't necessarily mean that the 9.0 is automatically a better game. Whose to say that PS3 Madden wouldn't have earned a 9.0 if there was no 360 version to compare it to?

does the ps3 version run at 1080p? That and the framerate are the only thing that i could think of that could be different. I don't play made so i don't care either way :/

It scored lower because they are the same game, but 1UP states the PS3 version stutters at times. They also had this to say which pretty much warrants the 0.5 differential.

...you've never played a Madden that moves as blistering fast and smooth as this one. That's what 60 frames per second can do for football (see the sidebar for the unfortunate PS3 difference).
That's a pretty significant comment in my opinion. But what does it matter? It looks like you have an Xbox 360 so you can just get that version.

You have both systems yet you plan on buying the inferior version. This makes no sense unless all of your friends will be getting the PS3 version to play online.
60fps does not necessarily a superior game make...
Well it obviously doesn't make it any worse.

If reviewers are knocking off points because you can tell it stutters, what could possibly make you want the PS3 version?

I have a PS3.

I bought All Pro 2K8 on my PS3... and it plays fine... I can tell Madden stutter on a 360 too... but since it's "60fps" that's gotta be a psychological thing. ;)

Anyways, that announcer is boring as shit. I couldn't watch much without getting bored.

it doesn't make sense, I'm biased.. I rather have the officially gimped version, because I prefer to play using the ps3 controller. I'm so comfortable with the ps3 controller that I just don't want to transistion to the 360 version.
Most of my friends do play on PS2, I'm the only one with the ps3. Plus I don't have to pay for live w/ the ps3 version.. so at least I can grab roster updates wtihout having to pay . Otherwise, I've alwyas had a strong diposition towards ps3 games, because I like that paticular controller.
Well, that's a valid reason. I've bought games before based on the controller I liked the best.
Me too.

Mostly between PS2 and GC games.
You have both systems yet you plan on buying the inferior version. This makes no sense unless all of your friends will be getting the PS3 version to play online.
-Some of us want to get a game on a console that doesn't sound like a jet engine when playing games.
-Some of us want our games on a reliable console that actually works and won't cause a headache just to play a game (such as scratching the disc, causing $60 to go to waste. Being in the repair shop too much. Or even taking 20+ tries to get a game to work).
-Some of us may want to play the game online and feel $50 a year is a rip-off.
-Some of us don't want to play a game on a console that drains controller batteries quickly, and once their dead, you gotta buy more batteries (unlike a battery built into the controller).
-Some of us just prefer one controller over another.
-Some may prefer one company over another and would prefer they get their loyalty money. When buying a multi-platform game on a particular platform, part of your money goes to that console manufacturer.

I highly dislike Madden (I have all my life, always preferred the competition, from the older NFL Gameday games, NFL 2k games, and even NFL Fever). If I were to get it, it would be the PS3 version all the way. Many people may way too big of a fuss over which version is more superior. I've played multi-platform games on several different consoles over the years and they're barely different enough to make any fuss over which version is better. I go with the more reliable console with a controller I like.

lies.
Controller is very important to me. The reason I own Soul Calibur II on PS2 now (use to just be GC) has to do with the PS2 controls being the most comfortable to me and easily performing the best. It's definitely the same case with GGX2, because I'd get tons of perfects on the PS2 version (due to pulling off my moves 95% of the time), while struggling with the Xbox version (due to pulling off my moves around 20% of the time). I played the Armored Core 4 demo on both PS3 and 360, before deciding which version to buy. I consistently got a better rank in the PS3 version and handled the controls better. That's why controller really is important to me.

As for reliable consoles being important, last gen, I initially bought my multi-platform games on Xbox. However, after getting DRE with every new game I purchased, having to boil discs in hot water to work, or even having to try a game 20+ times to get to work, I just gave up and started buying the PS2 or GC version of games (since they worked 100% of the time without issues). That saves a lot of stress and headaches IMO.

I'm not even going to read what you typed.

The PS3 controller could be a 2x4 with a dildo nailed to it and you'd still buy any multiplatform game on the PS3 because it's made by Sony.

I strongly suspect this is overblown. Much like those Armored Core 4 shots that came out.

Way overblown, and the reason why we're still talking about it is cat fights between fanboys. When it comes down to gameplay you likely won't notice the differences while trying to dodge a blitz while doing a hail mary to win the game.

Buy the game for whatever system you own or like. Stop having brand loyalty because that only hurts the gaming community. Instead just embrace
competition, because in the end that's what's been getting us all these cool games for both consoles.

For example, regardless of the 360 vs. PS3 squabbles, EA probably would have shoveled us yet more broken and buggy features had not some competition come into the market, even if small, from All Pro Football.

And zewone. Seriously, why are you even posting here? Beyond not recognizing differences in taste, you're not even trying to contribute to any meaningful discussion.

Then why are you even commenting in a thread about this year's version of Madden?

Controls are a big factor and I can see someone using that logic for a game like DMC4, GTA4, and Assassin's Creed. But Madden games come out every year so it makes sense to buy the superior version. After all, Madden and all other sports games are nothing more than yearly rentals.
I strongly suspect this is overblown. Much like those Armored Core 4 shots that came out.
I agree that this isn't a huge deal but it must be something because 2 game reviews have put the 360 version ahead because they notice the stutters in the PS3 version.

Though it has its shortcomings -- especially when it comes to performing on the PlayStation 3 hardware --
-GameDaily

Though the visuals of the the PlayStation 3 version take a back-seat to the Xbox 360 counterpart
- GameDaily

PS3 owners are stuck with an inferior version of Madden. While the game runs at 60 frames per second on Microsoft's box, Madden only clocks in at 30fps on Sony's console. The result? The gameplay isn't nearly as smooth as the 360 version and even stutters at times. And that's the reason why we're scoring the PS3 edition slightly lower.
