So I ordered the FFXII CE way back in the middle of summer on the day that it was announced. They shipped it last Tues and it came just fine on Friday.

But also on Tues, I found out from fellow CAGers that the LE guide is somewhat limited and will probably sell out soon, so I decided to order a copy from Gamestop.com (grumbling to myself that I could have saved $6 if I bought both in stores... in retrospect, I'm glad I didn't do that)

Well, it came today in a big envelope. But as I was carrying it, I noticed that there was some kind of CD case inside too... WTF?, I thought.

So I tore open a corner, and voila, they accidentally sent me a 2nd copy of the CE. Maybe the person filling the order glanced at my order history and saw that I had ordered both, without noticing that the game already shipped.

Needless to say, this has made my day :) I don't know what to do with it. Keep it sealed? eBay it? Return it to the store for $? Christmas gift?

nice!

you could keep it on your shelf for years and eventually sell it, but it would probably be more rewarding to give it as an xmas gift.

We all saw what happened with Final Fantasy VII. Even with all the copies floating around, there was some insane eBay madness with the release of Advent Children. Granted, FF12 won't be anyone's "first RPG experience," but I'd say keep it sealed for the future. I've heard there were more CE's than regular editions at EB/GS, but that's just one relatively small chain of stores compared to the rest of the retail world.

You should hold a contest on CAG and spread the good fortune. Seriously, it was free, and it would bring good karma to you.

Videogames are not good investments. Do you want to wait 8 years just so you could merely double your money?

If you want money, return it to Gamestop and get your money back. Put it down for a new system or even Rogue Galaxy (which is set for early 2007).

To be fair, doubling the $50 or so price of a game in 8 years would be about 9% rate of return with annual compound interest. That is actually a very respectable rate of return. Now the base amount is obviously trivial and do not take this as an endorsement of collecting games for their value though since I don't believe in that. The vast majority are not going to increase in worth.

I'd sure as hell sign up for a 9% rate of return on my retirement fund right now.

Awesome! I'm starting a 401k that invests only in a Videogame Futures mutual fund. I'll send you my paypal address and you can start investing with me! Yes, I realize you were just kidding.

It's been said before, but anybody buying video games as an investment deserves to lose all of their money.
I'd call customer service and let them know of their mistake. It's the honest thing to do.
why? because you don't like it? it's as secure as any other form of collectible (comics, cards, action figs, etc).

A while back I ordered an original Xbox from Gamestop.com. When it arrived, I was surprised to see two packages from Gamestop. I opened them up and, sure enough they had sent me two Xboxes. They had the same order number and everything, so it was clear that I could just keep them, but I decided to do the right thing and email customer service. It took them a while, but they finally got back to me and told me to send it back, so I did. Later, I found out that they thought it was a return and credited me for the price of the Xbox, meaning that I got my Xbox from them for free. I figured I didn't have any obligation to keep after them to get the matter straightened out.

Your story proves several things:

1) You are nice guy who will do the right thing
2) Gamestop is dumbass company
3) Karma exists

This is hardly a "Major" screwup. A major screwup would be if they started preorders for ps3, and all of the ps3s were sent you by mistake. Getting 2 copies of the same game is cool though.

Thats actually a good idea, but I'm sure you'll just sell it on eBay. Either way, Great Success!

Something like this happened to me with Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I pre-ordered the 360 version and they sent me the original XBOX version. So I immediately returned it to a store and exchanged it for the correct 360 one. By the time I got home, Gamestop.com sent me an email stating they sent me the wrong version and they would be FedExing me a new one. Sure enough the next day I had another 360 version in hand. Two for the price of one! So, being the Guardian of Peace that I am I contacted them and they said they would send me a Fed Ex label for the return...That was 2 weeks ago, and still no label. What to do....

What???! If 1 and 3 were true he would've called them and let them know about the money, then received a non-sketchy reward in return...it's bad to steal money when you know a mistake has been made no matter what preceded it  not that I really give a shit

I'd keep the extra CE and sell it later. If its value goes up, great. Even if it doesn't, it will still sell for something (especially if sealed).

I've also had a similar incident from EB - I ordered 007 Nightfire for the Xbox and I when I got the box it had both the Xbox and PS2 versions of the game. The PS2 version wasn't even on the invoice included in the box. Someone just screwed up. Being that there was no way they could prove I received the PS2 version since it wasn't on the invoice and I couldn't prove it was their game for the same reason (that's just me justifying holding onto it), I gave it to my brother. I was a hero that day.

Edit - However, a year later the same company completely screwed up my pre-order of MGS3: Subsistance LE. I guess that was karma's way of getting even. Thankfully I still found the game at a store though.

that what makes 2nd point possible. They would have continued to fuck up in his favor no matter when he stop being "nice".

congrats on the extra copy. It probably sounds dumb, but I think you should donate it to the Get-Well-Gamers foundation. You'd make a sick kid's year with that.
