Major Nelson and the pricing of GHII content.
About Gears of War: You guys are all forgetting that the maps are on Microsoft's servers, and that you are using Microsoft's bandwidth to download the games. I am almost certain that Microsoft receives royalties for XBOXLive sales. If the content is free, Microsoft is likely going to be forced to pay the bill.

Perhaps microsoft could charge a monthly or yearly fee to help offset the cost of Live.

Dude.. they're fucking Microsoft!!! If they have the bandwidth and server space to push out worldwide patches for an OS that more than 90% of desktop PC's use.. they can host 4 maps or a few songs on Live. Just imagine the data centers that they have at their disposal that we don't know about.. they're the largest software corporation on the planet! Google alone just started building another data center in N.C. on about 400 acres of land (and they're building more in other locations).. that's alot of servers. Our $50 per month subscription fee should be more than enough to cover game content. As a matter of fact.. I'm starting to feel overcharged for the subscription fee when I'm also paying for content and such... If I loaded Counterstrike Source up right now, Valve & Steam aren't going to charge me per month to play a multiplayer game (as most PC games don't). So basically... a Gold membership is nothing more than the right to play multiplayer games. Not only that, but games like Phantasy Star and FF XI charge a monthly subscription fee on top of that. What in the fuck??!!

Microsoft is trying to turn the 360 into a revenue-generating home theatre PC.. Sony's paying for that fuck-up now with the high cost of the hardware. I've enjoyed owning an Xbox as well as a 360, and have been a heavy user of Live since it became available on the old black box. If a yearly fee of that amount can't cover the traffic and server space for content and delivery, then they're full of shit. I can understand the use of online content delivery as a business, but few companies have figured out what price equilibrium is for it yet. They would generate more sales if they would be more conservative in which content to put a price tag on & the amount to charge.

What bothers me most about this whole debacle is that the explanation they give for the pricing scheme is meant for idiots. Is this how MS sees us? Don't try treat me like I have zero knowledge of anything and will blindly believe anything you tell me. This was a big mistake and if the ones who made the decision are not going to own up to it then keep your mouth shut.

I think I'm a little confused on what rights a publisher has vs. a developer. In the case of Guitar Hero I think Activison would have to pay for the rights from the previous games publisher to get those songs for guitar hero 2. Not to mention the music industry would want a cut as download content probably wasnot covered in the first contract for Guitar Hero 1. So in my opinion I believe Major Nelson was telling the truth.
Well they benefit because if one customer holds onto the game then thats one less copy that's available pre-owned, and they don't make any money on the sale of a pre-owned game.
ding. ding. ding. Tell the man what he has won.
No, he said the publisher sets the price.

Microsoft is the publisher of GOW.

The only thing Microsoft could be guilty of here, is not offering better advice to Activision on the DLC pricing.
Microsoft also gets a cut of the price.

"MS, i.e. the publisher gets 30-65% of the money collected for game sales. "
