CAGiversary!
Basically is that I have different office files on my computer and am unable to access them. Everytime I try to open them it says something to the effect of The (so and so).doc is unavailable. I can start brand new documents and save them, but I can't open them afterward. The same issue occurs with PowerPoint and Excel. This is the first time I have ever experienced something like this. I've taken the files and have been able to work with them on other computers lickit split without issue, but can't ge tthem to work on my end. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Office one time already, but it's still a no-go.

And so far my searches have come up fruitless.

Thanks but it doesn't solve my problem:roll: Again, I don't want to sound like I'm ragging on OpenOffice or not appreciating the help, but I don't find it useful to have to subject myself to Microsoft Office 97/2000 again. All I want is to be able to open up .doc files in word again instead of being able to just create them, but then not being able to open them again.

OpenOffice may still be of help here. The files should open in Office 2003 without issues, which suggests there is some kind of corruption or other involved.

If OpenOffice is able to open the old files for you, you can then save them to separate media and hopefully without the corruption. I've had to implement similar roundabout solutions in the past. At least you'll only need to process each file once if it works.

If it doesn't work, you'll need to look into some file recovery tools.

After re-reading your OP, it suggests you have serious problem with the drive you're storing the files to or the interface, considering that other systems are able to access the files.

If you have your PC on a network, here is an experiment to try. Put the files on another system you can reach over the network and try to load the files from there. If it works there is likely something amiss with your PC.

I hope you aren't using a hacked copy.

First you need to upgrade to the new office 2K3 service pack and if that doesn't work go to the "help" option within any office program and click detect and repair.

Certain windows updates foul out Office .dll files and the only fix are the Office Service Packs.

Are there any anti-virus programs on your computer? If so, is there some kind of Office plug-in running? There are sometimes issues with specific Office plug-ins and Office documents.

I fixed the issue. Took me a couple of hours, but I finally figured out what it was and got rid of it. Combo of some virus/trojans (2 of the former 4 of the latter) and my Antivirus basically acting against itself and the computer. It was like an autoimmune disease that just sics itself after the body.

Now I need to find another good AV other than AVG since I got rid of it.
