Major PS2 Holiday Demo Disc Problem - READ! will destroy all memory card data!!

Members of the Gaming-Age Forums who have received Sony's Playstation Underground holiday demo disc are a bit peeved at a problem with one of the demos on it. Apparently, the Viewtiful Joe 2 demo will erase all of the data on the memory card in the controller 1 slot. This is obviously a huge deal, as anyone who's put 50+ hours into multiple RPGs and then had their data erased will tell you. Sony has not commented on this problem at the time of this writing, but hopefully we'll hear from them soon.

If it was just one or two people claiming that this happened, we wouldn't be reporting on it, but this problem seems to be happening to everyone. So, be careful before playing the demo disc. If you have another memory card, I recommend you back up your saved data before playing the Viewtiful Joe 2 demo. I haven't heard any reports of this problem happening with any of the other demos on the disc, but just to be safe, you might as well back up your memory card before playing any of the games.

Wow. That's really strange! Do you get these in the mail for being in the Underground? I haven't received anything from them in quite some time, although I update my account and crap on their website...

This reminds me of a major screwup a few years ago when Sierra released a version of their 'utilities,' which was mostly adware that their games forced you to install, that would erase the entire root of C:\ if you uninstalled the game. This led to a few payoffs for data recovery, especially when these same computers contained accounting systems and other business data.
Sony quality control strikes again!
Actually they usually place disclaimers on the disks that say they are provided "as is" and that as they arnt the final versions of the games they arent subject to the natural QA process.

Underground Demo disks usually come with copies of OPM. So you dont actually have to be a member of the Underground to get an Underground disk..yet at the sametime as an Underground member you STILL have to have to buy or have a subscription to the magazine... bastards!

Bet this wouldn't happen on a gamecube version of the demo. Just kidding, had to get in a little fanboy comment there.

Thanks for posting this here, Chris. I got it up as soon as I heard about it, and I'm trying to spread the word at all the forums I post at. I recommend everyone else do the same.

There are already a lot of people who have had their cards erased, unfortunately.

Btw, here's the link to the original news article.

Thanks for the warning.
you might as well back up your memory card before playing any of the games.
Wouldn't it be easier just to take your Memory Card out of the system while playing the demo?

For the VJ2 one, yes. From what I've heard, the other demos are fine. If you want to be extra safe, you could just take it out when playing any of them, though.

On the other hand, maybe it's about time there was an easy way to reformat your memory card. I know I'm tired of going to every save and selecting enter, delete, yes. Still, that bloody sucks.
Yay capcom! first the same problem with resident evil 2 (or was it 3?) on the dreamcast, and now this.
Whoa! I have both but haven't played them a lot. Which game does this happen with, and when does it happen?

Well, this explains a lot. I got the demo yesterday and played it some (including VJ2). Went to play another game and my memory card said it was unformatted. Luckily, it's a new memory card and it didn't really have much of anything on it. I was worried that maybe it was a faulty card or something. Thanks for the heads-up OP.

Personally, I'm glad to finally have a way to reformat my memory card (should seriously be a feature built into the PS2 and not have to rely on bugs like this to do it). The Action Replay (heck, any Datel product that does anything with the memory card) is notorious for messing up memory cards and leaving undeleteable corrupt data on them. I consider it a godsend for finally being able to nuke one of my official memory cards that has this corruption and start fresh. I'm just glad that I got the email from Sony yesterday a few hours before the mail arrived with that exact disc. Saved me from losing data on the good cards I currently use.

Saw this posted at Gamefaqs if anyone needs it.

Do not bother calling the phone number on the disk. Instead send all concerns to:

I don't know...would it mater if your memory card had a bunch of FINISHED rpg saves? Would you go back to a completely finished RPG save and play again?

I find satisfaction in finishing an rpg completely and I don't need a game save to show for it (unless someone really wants proof that you finished it).

But then again, I have other game saves along with my rpg saves so I'd get pissed off if they got erased.

It's not about that.

If you don't understand it, you won't without a lot of explanation.

I just got home, and noticed that there is no VJ2 on my demo.

Killzone, MGS3, Jak3, R&C3, Silent Hill 4, some others. No Viewtiful Joe 2, though.

Are they dumping an old demo on me, or what?

I got the same thing in the mail today. No VJ2 demo. I even took out my memory cards before booting up the disc only to find out it's not on there. I actually wanted to play it too.

Hooray! I got my memory card-erasing demo in the mail today! And here's the list of games that it has demos for:
01. R&C:UYA 02. Jak 3 03. ATV Offroad Fury 3 04. Star Wars Battlefront 05. Ace Combat 5 06. Crash's Twinsanity 07. Tak 2 08. The Incredibles 09. Viewtiful Joe 2 10. Spyro: A Hero's Tail

I was getting excited when I read that other people were getting demos of MSG3 and Silent Hill 4, because I would really like to play those. Oh well, these are good, too.

i have never got one... i am a long time undergrounder... I have been a beta tester... im in the gamers advisory panel
This should be on the front page somewhere, this is serious.
I tried, but the most I can do is stickying it, hopefully that has helped some people, but it's up to Cheapy to front page it.

The disk is okay.

Even Viewtiful Joe 2 is okay. Just be sure to take out your memory cards.

I've seen this info posted on both 1up and gamespot, so many places are making sure word gets out.

myke.
Funny you mention that. I think this thread has the most by me that didn't show my asshole side.

What gives?
