Major PS3 problem with my TV.

I just previously had my PS3 hooked up to a Samsung DLP via HDMI, and everything worked fine without a hitch. Last night I tried hooking it up to my 42" Olevia LCD via HDMI, and everything is saturated in green except Blu-ray playback. Everything is hooked up properly, and the HDTV is 720p/1080i. It has two HDMI inputs that I've used before, and never had trouble with until last night. The XMB background is totally green, gameplay(demos) is saturated in green, Blu-ray movie playback works, but it appears to be playing in 480p(can't say for sure, just looks fuzzy compared to the Samsung).

I tried unhooking the HDMI, and plugging it back in a few times, and sometimes that worked, but when I rebooted the system it came right back to the green screen. Also, if it works properly at first and I start a blu-ray movie, then quit playback it goes back to a green screen again.

I made a video, but it's kind of hard to see the detail....

Did you recently apply the last update, FW1.8?

Doing so, fixed all my HDMI issues, but possibly if could be creating some.

Try connecting via component to eliminate the system as a possibility.

Yes, it has the latest firmware. It still worked on the DLP before, and after the recent update too.
did you hold the power button for about 15 secs?
Yes, I tried that as well. It brought up the display options, and I tried reselecting automatic which didn't work. Then I tried doing custom, and that also didn't work.

Try holding the power button to reset everything, try other hook ups to isolate it etc.

I was thinking of getting component cables, but I'm worried that for some reason the PS3 just isn't compatible with this HDTV that I'll be out another $20. I mean when you spend $600 on a piece of equpiment you expect it to work. It just makes me mad that I have to spend more money to downgrade to component which may or may not fix the issue.
Is the Olivia HDCP (or something like that) compliant?
I have no idea. I previously had a Panasonic upscaling DVD player hooked up on it via HDMI, and that worked fine.

Works fine on my older Olevia with HDMI.

Maybe you shouldn't bash the PS3 so much in your other posts. (at least I think it's you that does it)

Not only does the PS3 have Blu-Ray, it has Karma Recognition (tm).

fuck you. I'm entitled to my opinion, as are you. I'm not trying to hide the fact that I feel the PS3 sucks for gaming. I use it only for Blu-ray, and iPod playback. Right now, I need help, and you're just being an ass. I have a $1,200 TV, and a $600 game console that aren't working together, and it's very depressing. I really don't need someone telling me that, "I'm getting what I deserve" because you don't like my posts about the PS3's negative aspects. It's not like I'm some Xbox fanboy that has never even used the PS3. No, I own one, and I've used it, and I have an educated opinion on the matter, get over it.

Aren't they being sued for that. Some company in Arizona says Sony infringed on the patent...

Sorry, couldn't resist. Back on topic...I thought I read somewhere that some people have reported greening on non-HDCP compliant. Check your owners manual. It should be listed there.

Hehe, then you are getting what you deserve.

Just buy the new BD player from Sony.
Only $499, and no icky game stuff.

while i normally smile at your posts, you are indeed being an asshole. i hope you dont have karma recognition otherwise youre fucked =)

Umm, dallow has a point. The OP bashes at the PS3 every chance he gets. He only uses his PS3 for blu ray like he says, might as well sell/thrash his PS3 and get himself a blu ray stand alone player.

fuck you guys. Thanks for the help to the people that really tried to help me. Sad to see this place has turned into GameFAQs.

Well it looks like his bashing was at least somewhat accurate then, hmm?

I think what made dallow and a few others go the route they did was you assume that its a problem with the PS3 Chris, where it might be a problem with the TV. You have no need to defend yourself Chris, because those of us that read you posts regularly know that you point out downsides to every system when its called for. Anyone that is happy with the current PS3 game line up is kidding themselves (and this is coming from a HUGE Sony fan). The only thing that gets any playtime from me atm is MLB 07: The Show.

Have you tried calling either Sony or Olivia's customer service?

Dallow, lay off. Chris is one of the better posters around here and one of the most level headed when it comes to systems. You're not making yourself look good here.

I've read his posts, I've never liked Chris.

Work makes me grumpy.

I gave my bit of help anyway.
My older Olevia LCD works fine with HDMI and my PS3.

It's hard to imagine HDCP being an issue if his (probably) newer, and bigger Olevia HDTV is giving him wonky video problems when mine is fine.
Not sure what the issue is.

Gots to be the shitty PS3.

Actually it only became GameFAQs because people like you craps every PS3/blu ray thread. We even gave you advice, buy a damn Blu Ray player and you can stop crying about the PS3. I'm not surprised to see jer7583....where's gizmogc now?

As funny as this may sound, I would try a new hdmi cable if you have one. If this doesn't solve your issue, see if you can get another hdmi device to plug in. It sounds like a cable is damaged or possiblythe hdmi port itself. However, it is unlikely that both ports are bad. Some TVs just don't like some cables, as funny as that may be. Also, I install HD-TVs on the weekends for folks and have seen this happen many times.

Thanks guys, I'm sorry if I'm making it sound like it's only a PS3 problem. It definitely could very well be my TV. Actually, I'd 100% think that it's the TV if it weren't for the fact that my upscaling DVD player works over HDMI with the same cable on the same port. I'm going to have a friend bring over an Xbox 360 Elite later to see if that works, and if it doesn't then I'll know for sure if it's the set or not. I hope it's not though because my warranty was up three weeks ago!

Sorry if I got mad at anyone in this thread, I just felt like I was getting kicked while I was down.

i'm not trying to pick sides, but dallow knows the stuff, he helped me with my display problem.

I think the "source" of this flamable thread is the title... Major P3 problem? I don't know this is major, but it got my attention alright.

Now, i suggest you do some more testing with a component connection, chances are that should solve your problem. And if you don't have component, why not try the composite cable that comes with the PS3? If that works (in gaming mode), then chances are it's a HDMI or component connection problem (for gaming).

Well, if it weren't for the fact that standalone players cost more, and the PS3 is supposed the best Blu-ray player that would make sense. How am I crying about the PS3? I have a problem, I'm seeking advice because I've seen others get help here before.

There's this one, comes out this week.

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-vbbOd5NSTzX/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=279850&I=158BDPS300

I would try another another HDMI cable, or pushing the current one in and making sure it's secure.
I've seen HDMI cables do weird color overlays, including green if part of the cable isn't in all the way.

And I GUESS was being a prick when I commented in this thread.
I just saw the title, saw the creator, and held my breath as I clicked on it.

don't get them to downgrade, just to see if it really is the PS3 or the Olevia. I guess some normal composite cables would work just as well. you can get some cheap PS2 component cables from gamestop used and I think they have a GS-brand for $10.

it seems like it's the TV since the ps3 worked fine on another TV.

Everyone who's contributing to *yet another* pointless PS3 flame war-- sure, the PS3 forum is kind of hibernating right now, but try not to crap the place up.

Common sense in message boards is not to enter a topic groaning about the creator's suppossed intentions. Hope you get the issues resolved.

Buying ANOTHER blu ray player probably isn't the answer.

FYI, Sony just cut prices on their Blu-Ray players by $100.

Also I'm not really sure why the OP has a "major problem" when he says he only uses the PS3 for Blu-Ray and by his own posting it's working fine in that mode?

Yeah, I don't like you either jer, even if you're a fan of British cinema.
(or maybe just that 1 movie)

Try a different cable or port on the TV. If that does nothing, try resetting the video settings on the TV as well, not just the PS3. Also, a little more info would help us help you. Like what Olevia model is it?

Any chance it is an issue with 'RGB Full Range (HDMI)' or 'Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Super-White (HDMI)' settings being on?

Not sure what would happen if you turn them on with a TV that doesn't support them, though that might explain things if the Samsung supported these settings and the Olevia didn't.

Obviously if your Samsung DLP supported 1080p (and the Olevia does not), this should be unchecked in the HDMI settings.

Doubt it will help, but this thread on CNET forums seems to be similar:

http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7813_102-0.html?forumID=60&threadID=247271&messageID=2484132

Outside of the HDMI settings, I would agree with those who suggested an issue with the cable. If you don't have a spare HDMI cable, you can get a new one at a relatively low price from monoprice (likely under $10 shipped for 28AWG, unless you need more than 10 feet), and they guarantee their cables for life.
