Nintendo to reconsider better graphics after high-def "takes off"

Business Week spoke with Nintendo birthday boy Shigeru Miyamoto and designer Ken'ichiro Ashida in an interview discussing gaming for moms, thoughts on power consoles, how Wii was influenced by the DS, and the overall development timeline of the new console. Also of note is how Miyamoto described the challenge of making a $200+ console given the investment spent on Wiimote R&D:

"We had to compromise on graphics and give up on a powerful chip. Many of our employees initially wanted high-definition graphics. But they agreed with us that graphics wouldn't matter if the games weren't fun to play ... As new chip technology becomes available, we'll consider less power-hungry varieties that don't cost too much. And once high-definition TVs take off, we'll consider the merits of better graphics and more power."

What he's basically saying: "In the next console cycle, the chips capable of producing 720p and 1080p will be a hell of a lot cheaper."

Yup. Imagine if their strategy with the Wii works and they gain back a healthy market share - then when the next round of consoles launch they can put something out as powerful as the PS3/360 but have even more refined Wii-like controls. That is going to be sweet. It's like how Microsoft has an unbelieveably kick ass online component because they spent a generation working out the kinks...

That's the exact plan they have in mind.

It's kinda like when people complained that games got boring because they were bloated, but Nintendo had already called that out years before, and everyone took them to say "Nintendo hates long games."

and they will run cooler as well. I love some of the things I see on the 360 and the PS3, but both systems have to go to silly measures to keep the system from failing due to heat.

I tend to think of it this way...

A college has an awful football team so they fire the coaches. The new badass coaches get to the team and change every play and way that the team is used to doing things. Now, for at least 3 seasons, the team is still going to be bad, even witht he new coaches that rule. But Season 4, they come out and destroy everyone and everything on earth...

The next NES system is going to be incredible I have a good feeling and with everything they have learned with their trials and tribulations, it's going to be amazing the next time around. The Wii is going to do very well and make Nintendo a lot of money, enough to be a large contender in this "next-gen" era we are in.

the next Nintendo is what's going to really blow us all away and rule every thing on earth. (the wii is still insanely badass)
