March NPD US Hardware/Software Sales: FF13, God of War 3, Pokemans
God of War is done in a day or two, it doesn't sell consoles. Very few people buy a console to play one game for one weekend. There were more PS3's sold in February than March, 360k vs 314k and God of War III came out in March so what does that say? The PS3 shortage was also worse in February than it was in March because they ramped up production for the March releases.

I just find it ridiculous these days to call any one game a console seller.
The shortages were still going till mid april.. My cousin was looking for a slim daily since feb and finally found one april 10th.. They'd sell as soon as they show up.. Sony also stated the shortage will continue till june or so.

I personally believe they are just shipping out a small amount to stock pile for the holiday season launch.
The game analysts are also wrong all the time, so it's not like it's a bad thing. People that are right in guessing game sales are usually more lucky than good. The rationale behind the guess is more important than the guess itself. I did an analysis on NPD estimates by Pachter, Jesse Divnich and the NEOGAF average for October 2009 and they all had a similar accuracy (+/- 20%) on their estimates for the month.
I remember when EGM quoted a "professional" analyst saying that the PSP is going to be an iPod killer.
OK, I know nothing about Pokemon, but just noticed a curious thing there. Why did the SoulSilver version sell about 250K more than HeartGold? Looking at the boxes in the store, personally I was drawn to HeartGold over SoulSilver. Now, that's just packaging and my preference (I was considering getting one for the hell of it using the GS $25 trade-in promo but ended up geting Lunar Silver Star Harmony - hey, wonder what the sales were on that? ;))

But in case I should ever get one, is there some significant difference? It is my understanding they are only different in starting Pokemon or somesuch? Or am I thinking of the Mystery Dungeon games? These Pokemons confuse and anger me...
It's SuperiorSilver. I'd say it's that Lugia is a bigger draw than Ho-Oh, at least that's how it was when the originals came out. Of course there's no movie to help out this time.

If you're a casual Pokemon player, it won't matter which one you get.

Wish we could see how many copies Yakuza 3 sold. I hope it's enough to get Yakuza 4 over here...

Too bad Sony didn't have the hardware out on the store shelves in time for FF13 and GoW 3. I'm sure if they would have gotten a PS3 in the hands of everyone that wanted one, they'd be better off.

However, I believe they planned this because there are 2 new SKUs coming out with the 45nm chips in them (I think). I believe it's possible that the new SKUs will allow them to be profitable. If that is the case, they probably want to sell more of the new SKUs when they get here. Sony probably had to let the supply go down so stores can order more. Anyway, that's my theory. They probably should have gotten the new SKUs out before GoW3 launched, but I guess they wanted to plan the removal of the Other OS around the time of FF13 and GoW3 so it will eclipse the blowback.

Also, I got a good chuckle about FF13 selling 2:1 on the PS3 vs the 360; knowing how MS and SE wanted everyone to buy it for the 360 and how much each spent to try to convince everyone to buy the 360 version. SE even has a survey out on their site to figure out why the hell everyone bought PS3 version LOL.

Well, a lot of FF fans bought PS3s well before the 360 version was announced, expecting that FFXIII would remain an exclusive. Remember the uproar when it went multiplatform?

I started my hunt for a Slim on March 3rd, and finally got one on the 26th.
Amazon was sold out for those weeks inbetween, along with just about every other online retailer outside ebay.
The PS3 shortages should end when it outsells the 360.
Tale that joke back to Gaf. :)
