Apparently this is the first game featuring both Mario and Sonic?

http://gonintendo.com/?p=15198

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, players will compete in events that take place in environments based on the official venues of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Using a supporting cast of characters from the amazing worlds of both Mario and Sonic, gamers will be able to compete as or against a range of lovable personalities including Mario, Sonic, Luigi™, Knuckles™, Yoshi®, Tails™ and more. Innovative usage of the Wii and DS control systems to maneuver a favorite character will allow players to race the likes of Mario and Sonic down the 100m track, engage in exhilarating rallies in table tennis and churn water in a swimming heat, all while competing for the much sought after gold medal.

Kinda mixed on this one. Could be kinda cool. Or it could be another minigame collection with both Sonic and Mario selling out to a party who's not Sega or Nintendo. Oh boy...

Aren't Olympics games by defintion a collection of minigames?
Sonic would kill Mario in just about every Olympic event. There is no way Mario could beat Sonic.
Depends how much heat Sega makes him pack. You'd be surprised how much just a few guns can slow you down.

Speed doesn't do you any good if the camera switches perspectives and you go careening off the track and into the stands, killing hundreds of spectators with your badass spikes.

High jump.
Major League Eating.
I use Yoshi, Kirby, or Goku for that.

Edit: Scary thought: Assume for a second this is true. It would essentially be Wii Sports 2. Seems kinda cool to me.
I use Yoshi, Kirby, or Goku for that.
Goku? Jump Super Stars, Mario, Sonic... heck, let's throw in Crash Bandicoot and Master Chief to cover all the bases.

Suddenly, the thought of Tails riding Yoshi in a race scares me. Kinda miffed that the first Mario VS Sonic game would involve the olympics. It'd be perfect if they mixed more Sega and Nintendo chracters into it.

Kirby all the way for me. Toss him a funny hat and bam, instant win.

It's from Sega.com, so it's got to be real.

Hope he's a secret character.
words fail me. this just seems like a really big missed opportunity.
You ascertain that on little more than confirmation of a game being created?

Goodness.

MY MIND IS BLOWN.

Sonic totally sucks now, and I cannot stand to see him, so while this is a fucking HISTORIC event, I'll have to avoid it, I think.
Wait a min, this shit is real?

Hopefully this means no Sonic in Smash Bros, which I wouldn't have wanted.
If it means anything for SSBB, then it would mean that Sonic has a higher chance of being in SSBB.

Agreed. My guess is that this is simply the beginning of a closer relationship between Nintendo and Sega. Plus, this is a title with world wide appeal. It will get plenty of marketing tie-in with the Olympics. It's actually great from a business perspective. Now, will it work? I don't know, but as someone said it could basically be Wii Sports 2 and people would go nuts.

I'm kinda bummed about the news. I thought he was going to be a character on Mario Party or Mario Galaxy or some new game where they both join forces on an action adventure platformer...

Too soon to say though, could be good.
This game will be shit.
That's exactly what I was thinking... especially if Sega is making it.

It would've been show much better to have Sonic in SSBB or even a Mario Party game. But this just has 'fail' written all over it.

What the fuck, you are making an olympic game with mario and sonic but you have yet to add sonic to the smash brothers list. If you do not add sonic to the smash brothers list but make a crappy olympic game I will personally fly over to japan and kick the crap out of sega and nintendo, seriously.

I've NEVER played a truly fun olympic game ever, and this will probably suck as well... but there is a sliiight glimmer of hope considering the characters and the fact that they probably want to make the game great since its a sonic + mario first timer...
You ascertain that on little more than confirmation of a game being created?

its sonic and mario, two of the most enduring characters the industry has ever produced, and the first game they'll be put in together is some cross promotional tie-in with the olympics? the first time these two platforming icons meet is in something that will more than likely end up being a glorified sports mini-game collection? disregarding the fact that there hasn't been a good olympics game ever, maybe this game could end up being great. it'll still come off as an odd choice for their first crossover. i'm not saying it's sacrilege, it just seems like a missed opportunity for something that could have been a bit more epic.

of course, i guess it doesn't matter that much since sega has already done every thing they can to run the sonic brand completely into the ground. still, if i were to travel back in time to tell little shmitty, genesis controller clutched in his hands, that the first game sonic and mario were going to be in together was an olympics game, he'd deem it totally uncool.

If Nintendo was making this in-house, it'd probably be great.

Since Sega is in charge, it will probably suck.

Hopefully, Nintendo gives them a TON of support. (As in, they don't allow a turd to make it to market!)
disregarding the fact that there hasn't been a good olympics game ever, maybe this game could end up being great.
There was a Winter Olympic games in the late 80's by Epyx that was awesome. Especially the Ski Jumping. Of course I was like 7 at the time so that might have been why it was good.

Goku? Jump Super Stars, Mario, Sonic... heck, let's throw in Crash Bandicoot and Master Chief to cover all the bases.

STOP.... TALKING ABOUT JUMP SUPERSTARS! I CAN'T AFFORD IT DAMN YOU AND MENTIONING IT ONLY MAKES ME WANT TO BUY IT!

This will be an unholy alliance from ages past. A fallen foe returns to join forces with his former rival. It could be the ultimate tag team. If they can make this work......itll be TEOTWAWKI
I think I read a statement that Miyamoto was overseeing in some way, so we'll see.
I hope he stops working on everything else while this game is going on!

Could potentially be online...

Nintendo said the first online game would be Pokemon and I think that's out in summer. Anything after that could be fair game I think.

Even if it is online, having multiple friend codes is going to drive me nuts. I just couldn't do it on the DS and usually ended up playing with random people which isn't as fun. A big fuck YOU to Nintendo for keeping friend codes.

Online can't save a bad game though. I'm guessing this'll end up being a mediocre title at best.

Good to see the characters crossing over, but I have no interest in the game.

Have hated every olympic or track and field game I've played. Just button mashing mini-game collections, and this case a probably a flail around like an idiot mini game collection. Just not my cup of tea.

But this would seem to make it pretty likely for Sonic to end up in Smash Bros and/or Mario Sports titles which would be cool.

From this IGN article:

Nintendo of America's vice president of marketing and corporate affairs, Perrin Kaplan, told us that all of the competitions in Mario & Sonic at the Olympics will take full advantage of the motion-sensory functionality of the Wii controller.
So, I take it that all of the competitions in Mario & Sonic at the Olympics will NOT take full advantage of the motion-sensory functionality of the Wii controller? And it may, in fact, use the classic controller or Gamecube controller instead? Or perhaps a Wii-to-DS link? Whatever the control scheme, it will definitely be available in all retail game stores along with the game release. And it will definiely be region-free. Or not.

Here's Matt C's blog:

I've been sitting on the announcement for Mario & Sonic at the Olympics for awhile. It's one of those games I mentioned a few weeks ago. (There are still much bigger ones, so don't worry.) But I don't want to downplay the significance of this project and I can't, for the life of me, understand why some people on the message boards have already ripped it apart.

The game is being developed by SEGA of Japan, which has me a little worried, I freely admit. The company hasn't exactly dazzled me with its efforts in recent times. That being true, Nintendo is also directly involved and, more specifically, Miyamoto is on the job. I think Nintendo realizes how important this title could be for Wii and doesn't want it mucked up. Therefore, I'm confident that Miyamoto and crew will be ever watchful of SEGA's developments.

I think some of you were expecting a Mario and Sonic platformer of some sort, but really, this title makes much more sense to me. It is, when you break it down, Wii Sports + Olympics + Mario + Sonic + online. What the hell is not to like about that? This game could very well be the next biggest thing since Wii Sports. Do not downplay its existence. If it is done right, it could be one of Wii's best-sellers of the year.

Some gamers also seem to have missed out on the significance of this announcement. Nintendo and SEGA are actively working together on a cross-license product. Do you honestly believe that Sonic won't be in Super Smash Bros. Brawl at this point? Of course he will! It would be an injustice if the mascot wasn't.

Oh, and this is being made by Sega's sports team, not Team Sonic.
