Mario Kart DS Ass Kicking/Chat thread

From the Nintendo website:

In order to comply with airline regulations, do not use PictoChat, or play the multiplayer modes of DS games while on board an airplane. It pisses me off cause I almost win and I lose by like a fraction of a second everytime no matter how hard I try! So it gets old after you lose about 15 times and you get beat by way less than a second. I'm starting to figure out that Mariokart really doesn't require skill its more about managing your powerups using them at the right time. I can't wait for a realistic online game to come out for the DS then that will be more my style.

I take it this is your first Mario Kart experience?

I'm still waiting for people to add me to their friends list so I can play a friend match. I've added most of the people from the OP and tried to get most afterwards.
 
I'll add you right now Bott, I just raced against UMX. I still can't get the initial boost at the start with this specific Mario Kart >.> never have a problem in the others.

Tied first set of races, won the second set.

Haha, actually only two to the blue shell. Most of the first race was due to the triple mushroom right at the end ;) The third blue shell managed to hit you after you finished. Oops. Good racing!

Botticus = 4-0! Though that number just means I need to start playing more.
 
Funniest thing happened last night!

Got a online match, one guy was "Ih8snakers." Another guy was "snaker" with an icon of a naked woman. I thought, "Oh boy..."

So, three of us just tormented this snaker dude. (I have a rule about beating the snot out anyone with an icon that would be inappropriate for kids to see)

At one point I had a star, passed him (he dodged), then I slammed on the brakes and he ran right into me. At one point I let off the accelerator pegged him with a red shell.

"ih8" was Bowser, snaker was Yoshi, there were many mushroom blasts off of DK Pass and the guy ended up losing on Figure 8, the snakers' dream.

I was just cracking up. I ended up losing, but it was hilarious. Just thought I'd share.
 
finally beat all the CC's. unlocked R.O.B and the ability to choose any kart for anyone. can't wait to try that weird motorized unicycle with Yoshi :)

We were concerned, but they never made an announcement regarding that. We did hit a rough area where we encountered a lot of turbulence, but they attributed that to something else.

I'd be wary about doing it again, but it wasa lot of fun.

Now, if only I could locatemy wireless router for online play...
 
Man, this disconnecting BS is getting really out of hand. I guess I've been lucky for the most part and at least one or two people will stay until the end, but every single time I raced today every opponent ended up dropping. If this game wasn't so good I'd stop playing it, but these dipshits who turn off their DS because they're losing are really ruining the online experience.

cheats and exploits are meant to be taken advantage of, jus look at fighting games. why cant u take advantage of them?

I aint got this game, too broke. But now I really want it jus becoz. Seriously, if u gotta complain about how u r losing, stop sucking so much!

While it happens, it's not all the time, and there are still skillfull ways to watch out

That's why you need to be aware of the bottom map and who is behind you (he is most likely doing the drafting trick to pass you up)
When you see someone clinging on your tail, steer away or even do a quick powerslide boost

There are ways around it and it's not the game's fault. I happen to think this is the best balanced Mario Kart of them all. The ones with the highest records I see online really are the best drivers I've seen. They didn't get there with lucky item aquisition, they got there with expert driving skills.

Do you know if hopping breaks a draft? I haven't been able to test it but if someone is drafting you and getting ready for a boost, will a simple hop break it or do you have to move out of their range to the side?

I find that when someone is drafting me and I try to get sneaky, I end up crashing into something.

I already know how to do the one exploit I think is unfair but still won't do it. I think shortcuts are things to take advantage of, but skipping half the course (Wario Stadium) due to something that was not meant to happen is something I won't do. It really ruins the fun of the game even if everyone does it. If you want to use something like that, by all means do. However, I won't want to play online with you if you do that. That's my choice. Again, that only applies to Wario Stadium. Drafting on someone at the end or zipping through a shortcut is no big deal. That's part of the game. So is holding onto a star 'til the last part of the race (you could get ghosted for that!)

This cheat is the same as Wario Stadium on the N64 - there was an almost identical cheat that would get you nearly 1/2 a lap ahead. Anyone who did that would get the wrath of the other 3 playing, so we just decided that was not kosher to do. I've let that go into the online world.

Having played the game over a week, I've gotten used to the controls and am getting as good as in the N64 days. Practice! :)
 
Are online matches always in the 150CC class? I'm a complete noob and I went on and got totally smoked, I think, b/c I wasn't used to such a fast pace.

That's a good question. I never tried that.

As for what class it is, I think no matter what it will be that class. There's no way to change it that I know of.

Just keep practicing! :) When I first played I was smoked terribly and I almost wanted to give up. Then, after practicing and practicing, you learn nuances, and it's those small things that make you faster.
So far the skills I place the most value on is drafting, powersliding, and course memorization.
 
I would guess that hopping won't break a draft, since with the way the WiFi works, you can't see your opponents hopping. Also, online is definitely NOT 150cc. If I had to guess, I'd say it's either 100cc or somewhere between 100 and 150.
 
Anybody on right now? I played against somebody with gamefaqs in their logo and they kicked my ass... anyway, if you're on, let me know. I haven't added everyone in the friend code thread though.

Well, I disconnected, but then my internet died immediately afterward, so I think it was meant to be. Not to mention my hand is cramping up for the first time. But congrats, you handed me the first loss of my illustrious career. 6-1!

That last track kicked my ass, I've never seen that before... which one was it?

It was the one in the clouds right? I don't remember the name but it's one of the GBA retro tracks. I think it might be sky garden or something.

So, I finally got that turbo boost you can get coming out of a drift by pushing left and right on the D pad over and over then releasing the R button. My question is how often do you guys actually use that turbo. It seems like you need a really long drift to get it. Is it a big key for your play style? I ask b/c it doesn't seem worth it to me. I usually end up in the wall if I hold the drift long enough to try it.
In case it isn't clear from my post, I'm very much a noob in this game.

Keep at it. It's very useful. Depending on the cart and character, in a long turn I can get 2-5 boosts. Quickly back and forth on the Dpad helps too.
 
ok yo I REALLY need to rant something on this game, but it's becoz of reading message board of gamefaqs as well as seeing some MKDS videos, but I dont want to post it on gfaqs coz it's too overpopulated and will get pushed back in no time... but...

mother freakin snaking is hella overrated!! I got this game coz of 2 ppl on this thread complaining about how much they suck, and now Im seeing just as sucky ppl post on gamefaqs!

there's a whole love or hate relation when it comes to snaking, ppl who can do it think they're the ish while ppl who cant hate it with a passion...

I never played mario kart outside of with family and friends on either SNES or GC and of course I always get my ass kicked, but now that I own one and got to know the game I came with the deduction:

this game is EASY! HEEEEELLLLLAAAA EASY!!! Im already workin on getting stars by my name for online play.

so when ppl complain about they cant snake, u REALLY suck! ppl who brag about they can do it, learn to play a more advanced game like street fighter!! snaking is not an "advanced" technique, I learned that shit in 2 minutes. Yes it is useful but ppl put themselves on a whole new level of skill jus coz they can do it, u dont even need dat much skill. I mean, the game is only like pushing a few buttons, one of which u never let go of (unless ure gonna get blue shelled and wanna reverse yourself into the ppl behind u, haha).

I dont even kno what else I wanna say anymore... >_
 
So who still plays online? My friend count is up to 60 but I never see any of you guys online. And whatever happened to the CAG MK clan?
 
I had CAG on my avatar...but no one is on, so I took it off. If anyone adds me, please PM me...I added a few people, but they haven't added me. I still would like to get on MSN or yahoo or AIM and just use mics or something and play people I know on it.

I've been deleting a few on my list, cause they just don't add me. I haven't played online the past 2 days because I've been busy playing the actual game heh.

I don't know if this was discussed before (I didn't feel like reading through 300+ posts), but what's with the rankings? I raced a guy 3 times, won 2, he dropped out of the last race and I was handed three losses to my record.
 
I played some guy named GodAllah. We played 3 matches and tied each time. On the 4th one, I beat him on the first 3 races so I was guaranteed the win and motherfucker disconnected just as I crossed the finish line. fucking dumbass...

I think when you disconnect you get penalized, at least I have. I've disconnected during matches because I absolutely hate racing snakers, but it looks like I get penalized with 2 losses when I do that. Screw snakers.

He probably did get handed a loss. I was racing a guy who decided to DC right at the end of the third race when it looked like he was gonna lose a close race right at the end. We we're tied on points going into the third race but I'm pretty sure he got a lose as I think I got a win over him according to my record after the race.

He says he disconnected because it is not in his programming, hehe.

I may have gotten a win, I'm not sure. I was pretty mad as you can tell from my post and I don't remember what my record was before I raced him. I was just mad because we were having some good races and as soon as I was ahead, he disconnected.

Anyway, I'll add you to my list when I get home. I'll probably be online at around 7pm EST or so. PM me if anything.
